When was the last time you got something for free that was genuinely valuable? Today, I’m flying Delta Business for the first time in a while, and I’m pleasantly surprised. Not only is the WiFi free, but it’s also far superior to what I usually pay for on United. This got me thinking about our industry, where very little comes without a price tag—except for the connections you make and the relationships you build. But does it have to be that way? Earlier this week, I shared our YouTube subscribership growth, but I didn’t highlight how truly impactful our channel has been. We regularly hear things like, “I’ve learned more in 2 hours from your videos than I have in the past 2 months,” and “Without your channel, I would have been completely lost.” At Bangert, Inc., we believe that access to valuable knowledge shouldn’t be out of reach. You don’t create a culture of extreme ownership by preaching it. When we created core values at Aspen, we loved the book “Extreme Ownership” and decided to adopt it as our 2nd core value. They figured that the bulk of the problems in my business came from our people lacking ownership. I was determined to change that. My big mistake: One of our ops teams messed up with a client; it was preventable. I brought the manager of the team into my office. I asked what had happened. He gave me a list of 2 or 3 reasons. While the reasons were valid, I felt the manager wasn’t taking extreme ownership, so I told him so. I went on for 5-10 minutes about what the core value meant and how, as a manager, he needed to embody the core value. The conversation ended, the manager left, and I felt I had gotten my point across. 2 weeks later, I was having a conversation with a front line employee who told me he thought we were taking the wrong approach. I asked what he meant and he went on to tell me that after I had met with the manager, the manager had immediately come gone back to their team and started railing into them about how they didn’t take extreme ownership, and that as an employee of this company, if they couldn't embody the core value, they’d be let go. AH! I had messed up. My manager had sat through my monologue about cove values, and then did the complete opposite of what I wanted. My actions were screaming so much louder than my words. He did exactly what I did, not what I said. After remedying the situation, I changed my approach. Whenever something bad happens in the company, it’s my fault. I hired the people, I chose the vertical(s) we play in, I wrote (or hired the person who wrote) the SOPs, and on and on. Extreme ownership cannot be preached, it must be lived. As leaders, our people will ignore what we say, and will instead do what we do. What an incredible Denver Startup Week! 🙌 The energy, innovation, and collaboration in Denver's startup community is truly something special. Seeing leaders share genuine stories of both their successes and failures as entrepreneurs was a great reminder of the value of vulnerability in the workplace. Denver isn't just a startup hotspot— it's a city determined to stay on the map as a tech hub worth paying attention to. Now officially recognized as a tech hub for the quantum industry under the CHIPS Act, and with SpaceTech booming across Colorado, the momentum here is undeniable. 🚀 Special shoutout to some of my favorite presenters: Cody Moore, VP at Caruso Ventures (and former colleague 😁), shared the numerous applications for SpaceTech emerging in Colorado, from security and defense to climate change monitoring and efforts to make space exploration more sustainable. Brett Guy, Staff Software Engineer at Ibotta, presented "Finding Your True North," a great reminder that a fulfilling career is always attainable, even when the direction may be unclear. He also recommended a personal favorite of mine (perfect for those of us experiencing a 30-something identity crisis): "Designing Your Life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans! Stacey Feldman, CPA (Partner and COO of Full Send Finance),⚡️Roman Villard, CPA (Founder of Full Send Finance), and Jesse Randall (CEO of Sweater) shared stories and insights from their finance careers. As a Rev Ops professional, my favorite insight came from Stacey, who highlighted the importance of thinking about your data as if it’s going to scale. Why did I write Executive Debt? Because leadership isn’t just about the numbers. It’s about the lives behind those numbers—the people, families, and communities who depend on us to get it right. Though I typically recognize customers are just like us, there is no reason for me to believe that the things that matter to me in life matter in the same way to the customers I work with every day. These are people, just like us, with priorities and passions and pressures. Differentiate their personal value. Customer experience can forget to do that, because we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to execute all the standard, measurable things. 🚨 Brag alert: If you've attended one of our Adobe Express for Edu trainings in Utah, chances are... you've had the opportunity to work with Zachary Ordoñez, who is undeniably one of my favorite people I've had the opportunity to partner with since starting at Adobe. 💪 Zach is known as someone who will take a training from "professional development" to "a creative PD experience." He's known for his dad jokes, his "swag bars," his innovative approaches to weaving creativity into student work, and-- most importantly, his deep understanding of teachers, students, and Adobe Express.
