I've had this article from Gergely Orosz's awesome newsletter on my read list for about a week! It's fascinating to see how quickly Anthropic's Claude has progressed to creating tangible deliverables for developers. - the release of Sonnet raising the bar for developers using LLMs to help them code - the release of an early demo and the iteration of a few dedicated engineers - how Artifacts was developed, which allows anyone to create web apps and deploy them into a secure sandbox so you can see the result straight away My favourite quote from the article: "It wasn't just about making the process faster. It was about changing how we interact with Claude, making it more tangible, more immediate, more collaborative.” Avoiding the "blank page" problem is still (for me) one of the most exciting value adds of generative AI. I frequently iterate over ideas with ChatGPT, CoPilot and Claude to help me think outside of the box. Anthropic's 3.5 Sonnet's "Computer Use" feature is pretty interesting. It can now interact directly with a computer's desktop environment, replacing much of what traditional RPA used to handle. Imagine AI not just running scripts but manipulating your desktop like a human would—that’s where things are heading. It’s a big leap for automation, and I’m excited to see how this changes the landscape. https://lnkd.in/dYw8Tify. The "computer use" naming is meh, but despite the naming convention, the use case possibilities are endless.

How has personal computing changed? The early IBM clones came with bundled Windows 3.1. Users could run the operating system or...not, instead choosing to run programs from DOS, the command line. Adding programs to the computer required using disks and a disk drive. Intentional. Later versions of Windows ran the computer, so the operating system became synonymous with "computer" - and around the mid 90s people starting "going online" from home. They intentionally used a browser, a separate program, to do so. The modern era of personal computing's simplified and SaaSified for the user. SaaS = software as a service, which the operating system now is in that model - a service for which you pay monthly (or annually), ongoing. Everything accesses online, not just a web browser intentionally opened by a user. It's all bundled and wrapped together like a big package of usability that's very profitable for the companies that charge you by month. This model also blurs - for many - the need for safe computing. It all just comes to you - almost like you no longer need to do something like cut your hair regularly...it's just handled, and you get billed. And your hair doesn't grow (maybe this breaks here). Problem is, security doesn't work that way - at home or at work. It's why the security people at work may change workflows or introduce some extra steps that seem burdensome. Because of the incredible and invisible interconnectedness, we're much easier to attack. We've lost our doors, and our Windows seem like they're just a part of the walls. I remember walking through Sears as a kid and looking at all the things you could buy - like washers - and they had a price tag showing the monthly cost. Well, that seems easy and affordable - $9 a month for my washer (again, in the 80s). It's those thoughts that inspired this post. To summarize - and the TLDR; 1) The computer and operating system used to be viewed as separate. 2) And then they merged in how we thought and operated. 3) The computer (and operating system) and the browser were separate; we weren't always online. 4) And then all that merged. Everything was always on and online. 5) Now we buy even our operating system and adjacent programs on a monthly subscription business, software as a service. Easy - automatic. 6) But with that - security doesn't really seem necessary - it's just like driving a car, right? What's the next evolution? And how do we secure it? #cybersecurity #techevolution
