So back to the question: "what does the US trucking market look like?" Sources vary on the total for-hire firms - is it 800K, 1.1MM? No one knows for sure - too dynamic to report on for any. But the left end of the distribution is pretty well known via Transport Topics as well as other sources focused on publicly traded companies using Top "x"00 surveys. ATA has always published great intel on the right end of the distribution, most recently 95.7% at 10 or less trucks. I am sure OOIDA could add some color to this as well. Below is an estimation of the density of the US trucking market using fleet size data vs. number of firms. Fleet size on Y-axis, firm count on the X. Carrier types are the callouts based on fleet size. Many say trucking is a unique market, is there any other market in the global economy that is so lopsided on each end? Soybeans? Pork bellies? I don't think so... Somehow it all works in transportation...it's crazy if you stop and really think about it... Given all the hoopla in the tech/logistics market for the last 7 years or so, my biggest takeaway is that when anyone in this industry says they are in trucking and they want to either help you, or just transform the entire industry, the first thing you must know is what side of this curve they are most familiar with. It's not Mars v Venus, it's Mercury v Pluto. Cheers!

DOT Blitz is in full swing. For smart freight carriers, every week is DOT Blitz week. Smart carriers can choose to keep operating during the DOT Blitz week, sit out of the market, or choose to reduce operations and time their much-needed vacations while avoiding the inspection hassle. I’ve long stated that the “driver shortage” narrative has forced the onset of OEMs to push automated transmissions so to make the task of moving a truck forward easier, thereby making it easier to pass a CDL test. The immediate downside shows up in an article I read today about something as simple as engine braking… Even in the article, they speak to how the automated transmission push has lowered the overall driver skill which is a dangerous standard. Not knowing how to use your engine brakes properly can be a bad situation… Just in case you didn’t know, the HIGHER the RPMs, the more retarding power… Don’t expect to get good braking power at 1,000 RPMs vs say 1,500 RPMs. When I descended grades, I’d pick the highest gear I’m headed down in (usually 7 or 8th depending on the grade/weight, set the Jakes, give a 10 mph overspeed as a rule in my head, and stab down to the optimal gear speed.) For example, if I’m running 8th gear, optimal speed is 35 mph for that, I’ll let the Jakes work alone to 40-45 Mph and then stab back down to 35 with the service brakes. Understanding how to pilot your equipment with expertise should be the standard, but because of the ATAs reach on driver shortages, it ultimately affects road safety…
