Having designed studios at Google for Startups in various countries using Panasonic PTZ cameras, I haven’t faced much trouble with the IP setting bug that locks the camera after 20 minutes, since they’re built into the setups. Sony Music Entertainment wrote 700 companies this week, warning these businesses about using Sony music to train generative AI and saying this would violate Sony copyrights. https://lnkd.in/eJ8niB3e   This is a big step for Sony, which in 1984 won a key Supreme Court decision on copyright and fair use. I began my career during the early days of that case, Sony v. Universal City Studios (better known as the "Betamax case"), which challenged the legality of selling home video recorders. After two oral arguments before the Court over two years, the Supreme Court in a strong 5-4 opinion favored fair use rights over speculative claims by copyright owners.    As a student working at a law firm, a lawyer at the firm, and then the Consumer Technology Association’s in-house lawyer, I helped out on the case and related legislation. I chaired the Home Recording Rights Coalition, which successfully fought off movie and music industry efforts to kill or tax home recorders.    This week’s Sony Music gauntlet is ironic. To prevail in court, Sony Music (depending on what infringement might be actually and ultimately claimed) may have to ask courts to gut the Betamax decision. That case established key fair use and copyright infringement principles – essentially that recording an entire work may be fair use, and that a technology with significant non-infringing uses may remain lawful even though it can also be used to infringe.   We call the Sony Betamax case the “Magna Carta” of the American technology industry, as it set a clear policy in the United States that when innovation has a higher purpose it should not be banned, just because it is also capable of infringing uses. It allowed video cameras, copying machines and even the Internet to flourish, new businesses to be created, and anyone to be a content creator. This Supreme Court decision freed up American innovation and allowed incredible creativity and economic growth.   Today, as the developed world battles for #AI leadership, we hear the same sort of complaints. Innovators will have to fight back in courts and in Congress. It remains to be seen whether policy makers and judges will protect innovation or existing business models. I'm rooting for the former.

Hints yes... but actually? The interest in VVC is demanded the delivery of higher resolution video, but apart from OTT providers, the market is not running in that direction. Today is a world of efficiency - and that is with the existing AVC codec more than anything else, with the application of per title or Content Aware Encoding as a way to wring out more cost savings. Moving to other codecs, takes time and money with long ROI - not for today's economic situation.

🌐 Las Vegas Sphere: A Marvel of Modern Engineering and a Case of Contradiction! No doubt that the Las Vegas Sphere is an inspiring spectacle, delivering immersive experiences through cutting-edge technology. The giant orb is powered by 150 NVIDIA workstation GPUs, a grand total of 1.6 million cores to bring content to 16 internal 16K displays and to the 1.2 million programmable LEDs coating its exterior. Now, this remarkable setup demands up to 28 megawatts of power. Should we be using these amounts of resources for our entertaining experiences? The Sphere clearly creates an awkward paradox: while showcasing the 'Postcard from Earth' experience which emphasizes the beauty and fragility of the planet, the huge power consumption clearly goes against the message of environmental conservation!
