🚀 Reflecting on AI and Social Impact at Corporate Philanthropy Institute 🚀 At the Northern California Grantmakers' Corporate Philanthropy Institute, I had the privilege to explore a question on everyone’s mind: "What’s AI got to do with it?" w three remarkable leaders & friends, Anamitra Deb (Omidyar Network), Lili Gangas (Kapor Center), & Justin Steele (Google). They shared their wisdom on AI’s powerful potential & the ethical considerations that come w its use in philanthropy & nonprofit work. Key takeaways included: AI’s Dual Role: While AI can drive significant social impact, it raises pressing challenges around bias, privacy, & equitable access. This dual nature of AI makes it essential to approach its use with caution, purpose, & responsibility. Ethics @ the Core: Panelists underscored the importance of putting community needs first. Anamitra Deb emphasized a people-centered approach to AI, stating, “We believe in a more people-centered view of how technology is shaped & developed in service to society & not the other way around.” He highlighted the importance of involving diverse communities in shaping technology so that they have a real voice in decision-making. Centering Racial Equity: Lili Gangas shared her vision for a California-driven AI policy agenda focused on protecting vulnerable communities. As California hosts many leading AI companies, Lili sees unique potential for setting impactful governance standards. “If we want to create a more responsible, ethical, equitable AI space, we also need to be providing alternative solutions to what's currently there,” Lili said. Her call to action emphasized broad-based coalitions and prioritizing voices that have been historically marginalized: “Just because you can build it, should you build it? Just because you can scale it, should you scale it?” Capacity-Building for Nonprofits: Justin Steele highlighted that nonprofits need to build foundational AI skills to adopt these tools ethically. For many nonprofits, navigating resource constraints while integrating new technologies is challenging, and Justin advocates for a vision that sees nonprofits as experts in innovative solutions beyond efficiency gains. "Everybody needs to get skilled up," he noted, likening learning AI to other digital essentials like email and Google Docs. He shared how his new venture, Outdoorithm, is exploring AI's power to structure unstructured data, such as public campground information, to make outdoor access more equitable. Takeaway 💡: AI presents immense opportunities for social good, but it’s up to us to apply it ethically and inclusively. This conversation reminded us to remain intentional, engage communities, and keep equity at the forefront. When it comes to solidifying long-term power, conservatives are far more strategic than the rest of us. They plan for many generations ahead and focus on influencing hearts and minds. They have this luxury because they’ve long had the financial advantage. When folks are in survival mode, it’s hard—if not impossible—to plan long term. But this is the only way to maintain real power. Those of us who want a better world must actively and consistently program efforts for sustaining that just world for many generations to come. Not just socially and politically, but economically. This can’t be done from a position of weakness, where we remain eternally in pursuit of philanthropic dollars. It must be done from a position of power, where we corner critical markets and provide unquestionable value to resourced audiences. Henry Ford said, “Wealth is never attained when sought after directly, but as a result of providing a useful service.” To survive the ongoing shifts, and to thrive through them, social good and “nonprofit” organizations must generate revenue by filling critical and valuable needs for enough of the right people. What needs? For what people? Each will have to determine that for themselves. But every organization has mastery of some knowledge or skill that others will pay for. Assessing that value is the first step in activating a “genius-to-profit” model through which any organization can thrive long term. Adjusting for the right audiences and desired revenue is what will determine whether organizations succeed with this model. And whether those who desire a just world win out over those who are committed to destroying it. #wealthcreation #politicalpower #nonprofits

The world’s largest venture capital fundraisers are not immune from the fundraising downturn that has been especially hard on smaller and less established firms. Half of the firms on this year's VCJ 50 reported that their five-year fundraising totals declined or were about the same as they were for the previous fundraising period. Overall, the 50 largest VC fundraisers worldwide raised a combined $186.7bn, up slightly from $183.1bn in the previous period. As was the case for last year's ranking, Andreessen Horowitz was the top fundraiser, raking in $17.4bn in the five-year period, more than double the amount raised by General Catalyst, which ranked second on Venture Capital Journal's list. #vc #venturecapital #fundraising https://lnkd.in/gsriH8cB

Health x Climate: I have spent a lot of time thinking about the intersection of climate and health, so I appreciated the City Futures: HealthTech and ClimateTech Intersections panel discussion during NY Tech Week, with Ben Furnas, Sara Holoubek, and Joel Cesare as panelists. They highlighted the work happening in NYC; even though subway use helps our GHG emissions, there is still opportunity to prepare the city and electrify our buildings for the changes to come. Some key takeaways 🔄 Health + Climate: The effects of climate change impact our health and our health decisions impact climate change. We often think about climate and health in silos but they are very connected. 🔥 Heat waves: Hotter temperatures are the biggest risk to health from climate change, so we must prepare now. I learned about NYC's AC giveaway to support vulnerable communities. 🤓 New ideas: There is much opportunity to engage in mental cross training and leverage learnings from analogous spaces and industries at this intersection. 🌟 I took a few months off social media (I recommend it!), but the downside is that there’s so much to share now—UNGA, Climate Week, Consultant Connect in NYC, and more. So, I figured I’d highlight some recent wins, because the past few weeks have been massive! I’m excited to announce that three major companies the NYCEDC Business Development team has been working with for the past year have officially announced their moves to NYC: OpenAI, Bridgewater Associates, and Chobani—the world’s leading AI company, the largest hedge fund, and the largest yogurt producer. Lots of #1s! 🚀 OpenAI 🤖, the company behind ChatGPT, is opening its first East Coast office in SoHo, leasing 90,000 sq. ft. at 295 Lafayette St. Bridgewater Associates 💼 is establishing its first office outside of Connecticut, leasing 60,000 sq. ft. at 295 5th Ave. Chobani 🥛 is consolidating and expanding its regional presence, opening up at 360 Bowery, leasing 121,000 sq. ft. In total, these projects will bring over 1,000 jobs to NYC and provide a significant boost in confidence to the Midtown South market. The most innovative companies in the world need to be in NYC to stay at the top of their game, and our team is here to help them maximize these opportunities. Throughout the year, Buyouts gathers intel about the most talked about emerging funds in the market from our networks of LPs and fundraisers. Emerging managers, including first-timers, remain of interest even in the tough fundraising markets. In a Probitas Partners survey last year, 75% of 69 institutional investor respondents said they were interested in exploring new firm spin-outs. Only 2% of respondents had no interest in first-time funds. Earlier this year, we surveyed our fellow Los Angeles-based GPs to get a pulse check on the LA venture ecosystem. Here’s what we found: 💗 Deal flow is healthy, and most LA venture investors (68%) are seeing the same or more deal flow YoY. ✈ LA investors are spending time in a variety of markets, with NYC, Austin, and SF following closely on LA’s heels. 🔍 Innovation is concentrated in AI and machine learning, space, and commerce. 💸 Funding is happening, but it’s barbell-shaped, with deals concentrated at the early and late stages. Funding post-Series A has been challenging. 🚩 LA is differentiated, but not without its challenges. Key difficulties include not attracting enough AI talent (despite having the largest number of engineers graduating from our region over any other in the United States); talent relocated to more tax-friendly or less expensive locations; and the great SoCal / NoCal divide 🙏 Thank you to all our many respondents! I’m so glad to be part of a venture ecosystem that includes great minds like Anna Barber, Brent Murri, W. Thanks to Cherian Koshy and Nathan Chappell, MBA, MNA, CFRE for this insightful survey on how #AI use may affect fundraising from the donors' perspective. A potentially counter-intuitive finding: 1/3 of the1,000+ respondents indicated they will decrease their giving because of AI use! I like the paper below and I wonder if Australia is using or r we on the same projection as America. I like the simple action of bridging and building trust, and without them, it would be difficult to create a connection, establish a closer understanding of each other's situation, to begin a process to bring about change. We often hear about how all of this new tech like social media, trackers, generative AI is so scary and misogynistic as if these social issues didn't exist before and patriarchy didn't find or invent tools to cause harm. I'm writing an essay on some examples from ancient history and 19th century about image-based abuse - the striking parallels and how we can learn from the attitudes and the technology of the past to understand the present.
