Here's an example of leveraging a custom trimsheet on a simple platform design, making it feel more complex than it really is. As an Environment Artist learning how to create and utilize trimsheets is crucial to leveling up your workflow. There are multiple wins such as performance, high fidelity and continuity. 🔥 This is how I created a Hammered Metal Material using Substance Designer! 🥇 I created the base Noise for the surface, using a BnW Spots 2 and a Warp. 🥈 I hammered my metal with an inverted cell pattern. 🥉 I used my curvature to start my base color and add masks for variation. 🎖️ I rendered my material in marmoset toolbag 4 using Ray Tracing. 💡 Pbr might be nice and all, but at the end, the result you will be publishing will be the one you render. It is good practice to go back and forward between your graph and render scene to check that everything you are working on is taking you to the right direction! 💥 If you need help learning Substance Designer I have created a Free Discord Community called Future Material Artists where you will be able to learn from Professionals of the Game Art Industry and how to make your own textures! As artists, we are in a constant state of growth — keeping up with trends, adding new tools to our belt, perfecting our craft, learning new techniques, sharing, and caring for the world around us. New tools are always emerging. From painting on cave walls to chiseling marble, mastering Photoshop, and crafting with text prompts — tools are just tools, so treat them as such. Use these tools to speed up your work and deepen and enhance your unique style. As someone who’s always loved science fiction, seeing AI as a tool feels like stepping into my story. In many ways, it’s like living in a sci-fi dream come true! While AI will affect how we work, it’s just us being us, inventing, experimenting, and staying creative. Stop worrying about the ever-changing world around us and embrace it. Learn. Keep upgrading your skills with the flow of time and keep learning. The world needs more artists who embrace both the past and the future. Use tools to speed up your work, bring your stories to life, and put it out for people. Make.

Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red! Are proprietary engines going out fashion? 🤔 For those who have worked on both proprietary engines and Unreal, what have you found to be the key advantages of working with Unreal? #gamedev #unreal #halo

The pie game is still in the oven, but here is a slice (get it?) of some audio parameters for the latest addition to the enemy ranks: the Gourdian (get it?) The Gourdian is a big lumbering pumpkin who eats your units if you don't stop it, so I wanted it to have a layer of menace in the audio, so having its footsteps be audible off-screen while it approaches your walls foreshadows this. To give the illusion of distance, I could have used an attenuation curve in FMOD, but thought I'd give a manual approach a try. Three automation curves at play: volume, reverb, and a lowpass filter.
