Where has all of the DoD’s SBIR technology ended up? There are endless SBIRs released throughout the year, each year. Where are they ending up? I don’t really acknowledge the whole “Valley of Death” thing — these SBIRs are purposefully designed Defense Tech or basic Technologies that program offices strategically seek out. For the non-DoD sourced SBIRs that are organically submitted — they’re supposed to be dual use; private capital and revenue should be keeping those alive, right? Recently, I’ve found myself pricing small software projects for B2B partners that are frankly more ambitious and useable than a lot of the technology transferred from the SBIR ecosystem. My negotiations, expectation management, and pricing when it’s B2B is a completely different experience. The opportunity isn’t treated like a monopoly board game. Delivery is serious and expected. No one brushes off a collapsing $1B program or a $12M SBIR that went no where. My customers will torch me if I don’t deliver. I realize that the vehicle is being creatively used as a seed fund in a way. But, I think it’s dangerous to blend together the traditional “Moonshot/Deep Tech SBIRs” and the strategically leveraged “seed SBIRs” used for common technology or services. Both situations are aligned with different outcomes. Mixing them is negligent and dangerous. I recognize that we need to research gamechanging tech that doesn’t always convert into something tangible — or at least is on a much longer timeline of value conversion. But, for the low-hanging technologies that are being funded by SBIRs — where are they ending up? Will my feelings be hurt if someone sneaks in a deal for a generic 2016’esque Agile consulting gig as a SBIR? No, but don’t make it a core aspect of the vehicle. It ends up being wasteful and uninspiring. The warfighters, taxpayers, and government enablers need to get more out of those dollars. It’s literally why our capabilities are falling behind across so many different categories. The DoD has to change its relationship with value and capital. IMO, our distorted relationship with value, expectation management, and capital is as much of (or more of) a risk than something like cybersecurity. 💸 Direct to Phase IIs are $1.25-1.75M+…… From a scrappy (real) garage startup perspective, that’s a serious amount of funds—especially in this era of “do more with less” with small teams that leverage prompt engineering approaches. I feel like we should have hundreds if not thousands of little SBIR tools/FOSS libraries that are at least “close to MVP” or transferrable to another program in some way shape or form. DoD is pushing startups to take on venture capital pretty hard these days. VC funding can be a great option but it's not an out-of-the-box great fit for Defense Tech. Relying on private debt to effectively dictate what new tech into Defense agencies will have consequences and I don't want to experience that particular learning curve. #defensetech #emergingtechnology #venturecapital

There was an interesting article in the StarTribune Media Company LLC earlier this month focusing on the intersection of technology and agriculture. Most people from outside the ag states don't quite realize how interconnected those two fields really are. I thought this was a great opportunity for us to use our Azure LLM powered by our upcoming book, The Missionary & The Mercenary, and see how Land O'Lakes, Inc. could address the #disruption that always follows technology integration. The dual nature of technology is its greatest strength and potential peril. Innovations designed for efficiency and progress can also be weaponized. As creators it's a moral quandry. We must be vigilant and proactive in implementing safeguards that prevent misuse without stifling innovation.

For those who really haven’t thought the long game with AI. Think Netflix One server serving the same content to over 1000 homes at the same time. Now think if a hospital can intake 64 patients in the exact same time verse x triage nurses ? Think the VA able to schedule calls for 256 patients simultaneously verse how many admins ? Think inside sales agents being replaced 512 of them by one server able to answer any question from all those inquiries for initial calls. Think what Meta mentioned where digital ads can be made on the fly for customizable delivery to each user so the ad appeals directly to the consumer bias and likes. Think how those same ads will be able to report back live data on the consumer received it. AI is just just beginning! #NVDA Has the obvious advantage and there is room for many more chip makers to compete. The only issue is what happens when mass adoption occurs and the economy is in a paradigm with the loss of jobs. It worries me that people who sell, make, or use C-UAS kits are so worried. What are people's fears? FPVs, Swarms, or something else? Have they examined those fears and analyzed whether they are localized, regional, or elsewhere (underwater, space, and so on)? Does It concern speed, explosives,jam-resistant, cyber payload, cost, and so on? There are many factors. Can you explain your concerns but enumerate them like the data points above? If you have your variables, what are they, and why did you choose them? What options might you decide to mitigate? Kinetics, what and why, DEWs (Masers, Lasers, Phasers, Microwaves), jammers (intelligent, passive, noise, barrage, spot, sweep, pulse, deceptive, reactive, GPS, and things like distributed and such), Cyber(massive topic), Dazzlers, and a lot other things. I mean a lot of stuff. Anyway, this is a reasonable place to start before forecasting doom. I had a great time giving the opening Keynote at #KMWorld 2024 this week in DC, where I reviewed the past & future of Collective Superintelligence. I start with the biology of Swarm Intelligence and cover a decade of research that has led to the current generation of technology that enables very large human groups to amplify intelligence through real-time conversations. It's called Conversational Swarm Intelligence (CSI) and it enables large human groups (hundreds of people) to hold real-time conversations that converge on solutions with significantly amplified intelligence. I also discuss a recent study we conducted with Carnegie Mellon that enables Hybrid Collective Superintelligence (i.e., it brings additional AI agents into large-scale conversational swarms.)
