A new #CCSSO resource highlights how the Kentucky Department of Education is helping districts addess #ChronicAbsenteeism. “Kentucky is using ESSER funds to expand data visualization through another set of dashboard tools to help identify students who are at risk of being chronically absent. The data dashboard early warning system in Kentucky assigns every student a score based on data such as attendance, grades, behavior and family involvement that predicts a student's promotion to the next grade as well as the student's risk for barriers to promotion, including attendance and engagement. Statistics indicate that an average of 77% of districts utilized the early warning system in the 2023-2024 school year, with approximately 29,000 students on the watchlists in these districts during the last quarter analysis.” cc: Jennifer M. What does it take to change the trajectory of a school system? Our partners in Charleston County School District (CCSD) are proving that strategic investments in teacher development and instructional infrastructure are key. Four years into the ambitious Acceleration Schools initiative, CCSD has seen historic improvements in math and ELA learning, countering national declines. 🎯100% of schools supported by Leading Educators in ELA surpassed their 2019 (pre-pandemic) state scores in 2023, maintaining progress through focused work on instruction. 🎯The average yearly growth for Acceleration Schools matched the growth of all other schools in the district in ELA at 21 points per year. In math, Acceleration Schools students achieved double the growth rate of other schools at 13 points per year. 🎯 Half of the Acceleration Schools were removed from the state improvement list by 2023. Lexington School District Two piloted the SC TEACHER toolkit centered on teacher time to develop strategies addressing teacher survey responses. Using prompts and exercises from the toolkit, the district is piloting practices to more effectively maximize teachers’ time during the workday. Microcredentials grew in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now they are attracting renewed interest as states and higher ed institutions look to widen their value connected with data. WV is just launching a program and there are many other states already working on this same area. This is an ongoing trend that I personally find fascinating.

The new school year is well underway, with new challenges for students and educators alike. Georgia has struggled to improve its low literacy rates, especially with funding and regulatory challenges at both the state and federal level that are contributing to the loss of early childhood educators and reduced number of classrooms. Investing in early childhood education and literacy not only gives a new generation of Georgians the best head start on their education, it is an investment in the future of our state.
