In late 90s NY, there were few places for an aspiring 3D artist to work. Blue Sky was one of the only studios making feature animated films on the East Coast. I was in art school in Manhattan, interning at a local game studio co-founded by my friend and soon-to-be mentor. He was working in video games as a motion-capture director and had attended the same art school, though he studied painting. I was in the second class of computer art at the school, part of the commercial art program. If you’ve been to art school, you know how different those two tracks are. I quickly learned that being in commercial art wasn’t popular. You weren’t seen as an artist, but a worker bee, someone just chasing money. This mentor came from fine art but worked in video games—hardly the most prestigious commercial art field at the time, but I didn’t care. I loved video games. He was a fine artist turned motion-capture director, a true renaissance man. He embodied everything I aspired to: creating, experimenting with technology, directing, innovating. It didn’t matter to him what the medium was; he just wanted to create. He never shamed me for my interest in tech, and he found fulfillment both in his day job and in his personal art. Like Da Vinci, he was obsessed with life—both real and digital. He wanted to recreate what it meant to be real. How close can we, as artists, come to making something feel alive? I truly believe that’s why Da Vinci spent years on a single painting. I also think that's why we are still so obsessed with this single painting centuries later. For Da Vinci it was never “real” enough. He dissected cadavers, studied the human body obsessively. Was he a scientist, a madman, or an artist? I was lucky enough to have a master/apprentice relationship with a modern-day Da Vinci at a critical point in my life. At SVA, my 3D modeling teacher worked at Blue Sky. It felt like my ticket to the only place in NY making 3D animated films. Excited by my internship working with motion-capture and scanning, I told my teacher, thinking it would help me. His response: “Don’t mention this if you interview at Blue Sky. They despise motion capture and scanning. They won’t hire you.” I thought, “Why would I even want to work there?” I never applied to Blue Sky. It was the right thing for my career. I have always sought to work with and alongside those who are curious, bold and want to progress us towards wherever we are going. God only knows where that is but I'm happily along for the ride to find out, as unpopular as that might be.

If you’re a filmmaker and you use generative AI to make posters, pitch decks, trailers, etc. then I can’t take you seriously. Because what you’re saying is you’d rather use a tool that steals from artists rather than collaborate with actual artists. And I get it. Generative AI…it’s fast, cheap, and easy to use. So are prostitutes. Doesn’t mean you should using them either.

Q: What was your first job in the motion graphics/animation industry? How did it shape your career path? A: My first job was at Gunner, a studio in Detroit. It completely jump-started my career after I had been freelancing for a few years. I was lucky enough to live close, and I kept showing up. We did a three-month freelance trial, and it was a great fit. They taught me everything. We're all still working together today at Duolingo, which acquired Gunner in 2022. A bit about the project: This came out of a paper engineering class I took with the artist Kelli Anderson. In reading pop-up books with my son, I kept thinking, Pop-up books are animated! They're moving! I got more interested and took this course in 2022. Pop ups are WAY harder than I thought they would be. But this one form, called the Jitterbug, I could do! It's deceptively simple - a bunch of boxes taped together in the right way.  The flat surface across one side invited a painting, which invited animation. I used the app Artivive to stitch it all together!   Next up for this one, I want to map animations to each individual square so the animation doesn't break when I move the surface! Since there's a big Youtube vs Filmmaker debate happening on another platform let me share what I shared over there that I'm sure will piss a lot of people off. Most people who call themselves "filmmakers" are not filmmakers. This includes (but not limited to): - People who only make Youtube videos. - People who only make commercials. - People who only shoot real estate videos. - People who only make wedding videos. - People who only shoot social media videos. Because to be a filmmaker, you actually have to, and follow me on this one, MAKE FILMS. Everything I listed above is either about content or commerce, not about making actual films. The term "filmmaker" has been bastardized by people because they think being labeled a filmmaker is more prestigious than being labeled a "video" person. Which I don't get. When I go after commercial projects, I brand myself as a video director and/or editor. I don't need to have some douchey title to make myself seem fancier than I am. And the funny thing is, when you go on an actual film set, there are no filmmakers. On set you have a director, producer, director of photography, grip, gaffer, etc. People are assigned their proper title by their role. This is something I've been thinking about for a while now and it's good to finally get it out.

Can live streaming be thought of as more than just a cost? I recently spoke with Jacob Stone from Punch Drunk Productions about a pattern we notice when speaking with clients about live streaming. Many of these clients are limited to thinking about live streaming as simply a way for an event to reach more people. It is treated as an afterthought, seen primarily as a cost burden rather than a strategic tool. But in the creator economy, especially on platforms like Twitch, live streaming is a unique, dynamic medium that builds communities in real time. Live streaming can be so much more than just event coverage. It has the potential to foster a deeper sense of belonging by inviting viewers to become participants, actively co-create the show, and take part in an ongoing conversation. However, there's an old-school mindset that limits many companies from using it in these ways. This pattern we talk about is what really drives my passion to think deeply about the ways communities can embrace the medium of live streaming in a way where value is what leads the conversation.

NEW HOT STEAM GAME ALERT! Who’s playing Once Human? A new game from a Netease studio has recently started climbing the Steam CCU charts. Once Human is a survival looter shooter. Think Ark, Rust, Palworld, Valheim, Sons of the Forest, Subnautica, Frostpunk, …..ugg will they ever stop making these? Sorry, they are not my cup of tea but apparently, kids dig em! At writing Once Human has 170K CCU putting it as the 6th most played game on Steam right now after a bunch of Valve stuff that has been out for 100 years and a stupid Banana clicker game. I can see why something new is getting attention. I have not played, I'll admit, but the sentiment seems slightly above average with one weird complaint. It seems the terms of service players must agree to has some excessive asks. The ToS asks for personal data, social media information and your Government ID? Hummm. The Chinese-owned studio has issued a statement via Twitter trying to clarify the scenarios where this sort of information may be used but some people may be leery with the whole TikTok vs. the US government stuff going on. Have you played and signed over all your personal info? :P

The low key GOAT feature of Meow Wolf Houston is AUDIO 🔊🔊🔊 Like alot of the IRL stuff we’ve created, this is all about creating a magic circle wherein folks are given an excuse to be their silly performative selves. Shortest path to unlocking that inner exhibitionist? Audio. And most of what we LOVED about our day there was audio-centric - the “screaming room” as we dubbed it which uses ambien microphones to pump your voice back at the room, the radio DJ studio where every participant is just pitchshifting and vocoding their wailing to everyone else… touchscreens, motion detectors, whatever, mostly in service of audio-first design. Even the bluetooth-activated companion app is there to deliver hands free audio storytelling layer atop the psychedelic spelunking (only wish i could minize app to continue listening, as it drains battery fast, particularly the ar stuff) Also, on veteran’s day, i walk around wondering how many people have benefited from this unintended psychedelic immersive therapy. TSM#77- The BUSINESS SIDE of Professional SPEC Screenwriting- "How to Get an Agent!" Rarely a day goes by where I’m not asked directly or through a group forum post somewhere on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Quora about the subject of agents. More specifically, it is the plea “I NEED AN AGENT!”   Often, my response is “NO, YOU DON’T!”   The fact is the questioner doesn’t really KNOW what they want. They THINK they want/need an agent because that’s how it is in the movies… isn’t it? You write a screenplay, or a book, and an agent calls and says “Hey, heard a lot about you and your (script/book/graphic novel). I think it can be a BIG HIT!”   And the rest, as they say, is history. Well, it's more like fiction, or, at the least, revisionist history.   There are three types of people that generally represent the professional screenwriter and their projects before, during and after the deal-making process. They are literary managers, agents, and entertainment attorneys, and you need to know the difference in their functionality to know which one, if any, you really need.   LITERARY MANAGER A manager generally works on developing your spec screenplay projects, as well as your writing career. They target building relationships and look for paid assignments for you. They are generally career counselors and personal development executives. Managers can charge anywhere from 10-50%, but are generally in the 15% range, but there are no strict guidelines for this. One advantage (?) to a manager is that they can negotiate a deal to be a producer on a particular project. If they are attached as a producer, there is an extra incentive for your success, and generally much more team involvement in your career.   THE AGENT The agent IS registered with the state and must adhere to state regulations. They cannot negotiate separate producer credits on a project, like a manager, but they can negotiate with studios. Their goal is to find writing assignments, set up meetings and close deals when selling your projects. They charge 10%, and you may only speak with them once or twice a year.       THE ENTERTAINMENT ATTORNEY The entertainment attorney generally does NOT send out your projects or work with you on your development, but they will acquire rights for you, review contracts and close production deals for you. They will charge up to $300 per hour (or a percentage of the deal) for this expertise, but you have a much higher level of legal protection with an EA on your team. So, your best choice at this stage is the literary manager. This doesn’t mean they’ll do all the work for you; far from it. They are NOT taking 10% of your earnings while doing 90% of the work.
