PHISHING ATTACK The County of Los Angeles’ Department of Public Health (DPH) disclosed a data breach that impacted more than 200,000 individuals. Between February 19, 2024, and February 20, 2024, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health experienced a phishing attack in which a hacker was able to gain log-in credentials of 53 Public Health employees through a phishing email, compromising the personal information of more than 200,000 individuals A phishing e-mail tries to trick recipients into giving up important information. What I heard at CHIME   The CHIME Fall Forum was last week in San Diego. It was a great opportunity to hear perspectives from healthcare technology leaders from all over the country.   1. During our focus group we asked attendees what keeps them up at night. Security was #1. 2. One healthcare security expert said, “If we thought 2024 was bad in terms of healthcare security, 2025 is going to be much, much more challenging.” Every CISO or security expert I spoke with the rest of the week confirmed this. 3. There is currently a higher-than-normal number of open large system healthcare CIO spots. 4. Even though it was election week, there were surprisingly few conversations about the outcome or how it would affect healthcare. It was amazingly a “non-topic.” 5. There seemed to be more interest than usual in networking – even at the expense of educational meetings. 6. This was my 40th CHIME forum (fall or spring). Two disappointing trends I observed were: 1. Fewer CIOs/CDIOs as a percent of attendees, and 2. The ratio of vendors to healthcare executives was over 1:1. 7. There were many Foundation firms attending who had attendees scratching their heads and asking, “Who are they and what do they do?” 8. There is a new cohort of nationally recognized next-generation healthcare technology executives coming to the forefront. 9. There was a new format with focus groups spread out before the Forum started. There seemed to be some coordination issues with attendees. 10. Financial challenges continue at many organizations, but there are also those who are seeing double-digit profits.   Kirby Partners specializes in executive recruiting for healthcare technology positions.

OS Development seems very slow to modernize. It concerns me that both Windows and Linux OS are so vulnerable to "out of bounds memory read" issues. With this demonstration of worldwide outage, we have a new threat vector to worry about now. Any widely used, and rapidly deployed software can take down your computing ecosystem instantly. I've taken to posing a two-question proof 1) Is Ransomware a problem? (If you say 'no', go in peace!) 2) Are you running some sort of security suite (of course you are!) Ergo, 2 isn't preventing 1. Thus, why we need specialized anti-ransomware tools. I think there is more to the United Healthcare story than just MFA wasn't enabled on a server.
