As Health Literacy Month comes to an end, I'd like to just point once more to the health literacy website the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard (MRCT Center) has developed to help clarify clinical research. https://lnkd.in/eQHSKaAE Despite being released 5 years ago, this resource remains one of the only comprehensive health literacy resources focused specifically on patient-focused clinical research communication. We also recognize that a lot has changed over the past few years - we collectively experienced a global pandemic and its after-effects, saw an increase in decentralized clinical trial activities, and have a raised public awareness of AI, just to name a few highlights. So, in 2025, we will be working on some updates to keep this resource relevant and up-to-date. 🌍 2020-2021 PMA Agile Milestone: Understanding the Gendered Impact of COVID-19 🌍 As we reflect on the critical milestones of the PMA Agile study, one of our key achievements has been the Gender/COVID-19 Supplemental Grant initiated in 2020 to explore how the pandemic affected men, women, and marginalized groups differently. This study, conducted as a fully remote follow-up to the YRDSS cohort, has provided essential insights into the ways COVID-19 reshaped social and economic realities across genders. Here's what we found: Key Impacts: Economic Setbacks 📉 Women disproportionately faced economic hardships as the sectors most affected as retail, hospitality, and healthcare-are predominantly staffed by women. Many lost jobs or saw their hours reduced, especially in informal employment without access to social protections. For women supporting families, this meant heightened financial instability. Surge in Unpaid Care Work 👩‍👧‍👦 With schools closed and family members falling ill, women bore the brunt of increased caregiving duties. From homeschooling to household management, unpaid labor surged, impacting their mental health and limiting their ability to pursue paid work or education. Rise in Domestic Violence 🏠 Lockdowns and social restrictions saw a tragic increase in domestic violence cases. Many women were confined with abusive partners, while support services were harder to access. This shadow pandemic highlighted the urgent need for gender-sensitive emergency response systems. Barriers to Health Services 💉 The pandemic disrupted access to essential sexual and reproductive health services, such as contraception, maternal health care, and support for survivors of gender-based violence. This gap led to increased maternal mortality, unplanned pregnancies, and higher levels of mental health challenges, especially among marginalised groups. Educational and Social Setbacks for Girls 📚 With schools closed, girls faced unique barriers to continuing education remotely. Many were drawn into household duties or became vulnerable to early marriage and pregnancy, jeopardising their education and future opportunities. This 12-month and 6-month follow-up study enabled us to use a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative insights to comprehensively describe these impacts. In 2023, we took these findings and turned them into actionable insights, supporting evidence-based policies and interventions. In contrast, randomized controlled trials are rarely used to assess social and policy interventions. For example, during COVID-19, few experiments were conducted to assess social and policy interventions to address the pandemic. Is this because randomized policy experiments raise greater ethical concern? Or should we be conducting more randomized policy experiments?
