As the higher education sector enters a new era of fiscal challenges, without acting strategically, nimbly and timely, consolidation or closure for many may be inevitable. University presidents comprise a critical role in dictating the future of the sector; many decisions will be necessary, which have outsized implications on the constituents of the institutions they lead. The most deliberate, intentional, open-minded, mission-focused and prepared presidents will lead their institutions to a more seamless integration, ensuring mission continuity, institutional sustainability and improved outcomes for all parties. These decisions will have ramifications that will reverberate across higher education for generations. Keep on Teaching Toolkit ™ – Coming Soon! In March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced many campuses to close, I created a brief video for faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) introducing the concept of "Keep on Teaching." This video, and associated resources, were aimed at helping faculty complete the spring semester remotely with their students. The Broader Lesson: While the pandemic's impact was unexpectedly severe and prolonged, it highlighted a crucial need in higher education. Institutions must prepare their faculty to maintain effective teaching during various short-term disruptions, such as: - Protests - Natural disasters - Other events limiting access to campus facilities These disruptions may require temporary campus closures or restricted access to in-person instruction. The "Keep on Teaching" approach equips faculty with the knowledge and tools to adapt quickly to these situations, ensuring educational continuity. President's Proposed 2025 Budget Boosts Science, Innovation, and Data Systems Sara Schapiro’s analysis of President Biden's proposal for the 2025 budget—which requests significant funding increases for essential education research and development programs across various agencies—is worth bookmarking. Key Funding Increases: The budget proposes notable increases for the Institute for Education Sciences and Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems. It also enhances support for the Accelerate, Transform, and Scale Initiative, Education Innovation and Research, and grants for R&D infrastructure at #HBCUs, #TCCUs, and #MSIs. Honoring Robert Mislevy, Celebrating How Evidence-Centered Design is Changing the Game Join us in recognizing Evidence-Centered Design (ECD), a transformative approach to integrating rigorous assessment, learning, and instructional design. ECD has revolutionized the build of digital-first learning and assessment systems. ECD enables collaboration among multi-functional teams by clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of subject matter experts, psychometricians, game and LX designers, etc. It facilitates integration across all development phases—from aligning educational objectives to designing tasks and scoring. This approach enhances team efficiency and alignment. ECD was pioneered by Bob Mislevy, Linda Steinberg, and Russell Almond. This post particularly celebrates Bob Mislevy for his decency, kindness, warmth, and incandescent intelligence. Beyond his methodological contributions, Bob’s empathetic listening, thoughtful consideration, and gentle responses have made him a cherished mentor and colleague. This past spring I was invited to participate in the Center on Reinventing Public Education's AI Learning Forum. AI raises a host of questions and issues for all of us - in K12 and higher education, some good some not so much. Readers of my blog will know that I have spent quite a lot of my time and energy on these issues over the past couple of years. I really enjoyed meeting and spending a couple of days, at this forum, with a bunch of smart people, learning and talking, exploring the possibilities, challenges of generative AI. CRPE has taken these conversations and crafted a report title: Wicked Opportunities: Leveraging AI to Transform Education. The report takes a balanced view on how AI can address “wicked problems” like achievement gaps and teacher shortages, but not shying away from the challenges that of  bridging existing disparities and aligning edtech developments with student needs. In brief, the report recommends: Convene and connect cross-sector leaders to strengthen AI literacy in support of education. Seed a national education leadership strategy. Focus on the “art of the possible” to spread powerful ideas for transforming education in the age of AI. Catalyze investment in research and development for early-stage AI adoptions, innovations, and collaborations.
