Will changing your accent make you lose your identity? That depends... Does your identity depend on... 👉 People laughing at your English mistakes? 👉 Repeating yourself whenever you speak? 👉 Constantly doubting what you say? ~~ It might! ~~ But is that 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 who you want to be? You probably never learned pronunciation and vocal control, So you assumed that "it's just how you talk" Nobody teaches this, But did you know that... ✅ Pronunciation is a skill ✅ Communication is a skill ✅ Self-Expression is a skill ? As long as you think that some people are naturally good at communicating in other languages, and that 𝑦𝑜𝑢 are not, You put yourself in a victim mindset. Is that how you became an expert in your field? Is that how you became successful in your career? Of course not! You saw a challenge, skills you needed to learn, and you did what was necessary to reach the next level. This is no different. You're not "bad at communicating in English" We just haven't met yet.

Some accent sounds are perceived as more challenging to master than others, no matter where you’re from! 🌏 Here are a few notorious ones: The French “R” — This throaty, back-of-the-throat sound is famously tricky, even for some native speakers! The rolled “R” in Spanish — If you’ve ever tried to “trill,” you know it’s a skill on its own! English “th” sounds — Both the “soft” (as in think) and “hard” (as in that) versions cause trouble worldwide. Click sounds in some African languages — Found in languages like Xhosa and Zulu, these sounds are a marvel but take practice for most non-native speakers. It this it???? My recent podcast guest Nina de Sausmarez 💃 said this very sentence during our conversation and it really hit home because I asked that same question to myself a number of years ago. And I can remember how fucked up it sounded! I had a good job, successful career, lovely home & wonderful wife. Why could I not be satisfied and fulfilled with what I had? Because the truth was, my career was not filling up my soul and I was not challenging myself, therefore I was not growing. And those three words "is this it?" scared the shit out of me! But I also took them very seriously and started to do something about it. My life has changed, transitioning careers, moving to a new place and constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself. But the most important and impactful change was how I felt about myself. The old me did not think I was worth more than what I had, that I should be grateful and just settle. Bollocks to that! More does not mean more stuff. More from life to me is that I am going after what really lights me up, challenges me and brings me joy! And "this is never it" There is always more to life, we just have to be brave enough to go for it!!! And that is what I do now.
