The Chosen: Goodbye Guardian Angel Investors The Chosen has been a recent case study as a shining example of what can happen when creators tap into underserved markets with a compelling vision - and an insight into innovative media business models. The Chosen didn't just find its audience; it created a movement. However, if you’ve followed the recent contract disagreements (as it’s technically not a lawsuit), you may have seen the recent news that The Chosen (company) and Angel Studios have officially parted ways after arbitration deemed a breach of contract by Angel Studios. This video gives some insight into what it takes to produce a series of this scale - being its own company with over 65 full time employees dedicated to only one production. It also gives some insight into the financial tradeoffs with working with Angel Studios. When people ask why there aren’t more shows like The Chosen, they should understand the following: 1. Production Budget: Season 1 - $10 M Season 2 - $12 M Season 3 - $18 M Season 4 - $40 M 2. Corporate Set Up: The Chosen is its own company that does SEC filings and has a staff of over 65 full time employees. The money for the overhead of The Chosen company is completely separate from the production budgets listed above. The organization's overhead is solely funded through gift sales (books, DVDs, t shirts, hats, etc.), not through the Pay-It-Forward revenues (that all went toward the production budgets). 3. Full Time Job: This one show is the full time job for everyone involved. They are not balancing other shows, clients, or managing the typical diversified portfolio of work involved with most non-profits - especially since they’re not a non-profit. This is their sole focus day in and day out; which comes through in the level of reception and quality the series has received. I often hear “we could just crowdfund it like The Chosen”  from non-profits, other faith-based media groups, and independent filmmakers. While their intentions are noble, there is a reason this series is the only one of its kind. Most are seeing the tip of the iceberg without looking at the depth of work and business infrastructure involved in creating something with this effect. The Chosen’s journey underscores the immense dedication, strategic innovation, and robust business acumen required to produce a series of its caliber. It’s a testament to what’s possible when passion meets purpose and vision is supported by a solid foundation. However, the split with Angel Studios also highlights the complexities and risks involved in collaborative ventures, emphasizing the importance of clear agreements and robust business strategies in bringing visionary projects to life.

For producers like myself, practice is essential. And then practicing more is important. You're doing a lot to produce a live stream. You are seamlessly managing the visual aspects of a live stream while engaging with the run-of-show document, monitoring the internal comms, and ensuring the stream is running smoothly. I was recently featured as a speaker for an event to talk about productivity tools. For once, I was IN FRONT of the screen. It was my turn to go LIVE, and then.... looped audio with an echo. Oops, there was an audio issue that was happening LIVE. I couldn't do much because I wasn't in charge of the live stream. We got it sorted out quickly. So, this is your reminder. Practice, practice, practice... AND have a backup plan too! #bepresent #production #livestreaming

You remember this Spider-Man drawing meme from a few years back? https://lnkd.in/gXwXApdd You know, the one that shows the level of quality you get when you give an artist 10 minutes vs. 1 minute vs. 10 seconds? I remember when it started doing the rounds, a lot of creative types used it as an example of how much worse their work is when it's rushed vs. when they get enough time to truly ideate. What's funny is, this isn't even the best depiction of that. Imagine instead if you started by giving someone 10 seconds to draw a *brand new* superhero — one that doesn't already exist. My guess is the result would go something like "Uhhhmmmmm.... I dunnnoo.... (hastily scribbles rough silhouette with a cape)". Then give them 1 min and watch more detail get added. And then 10 and watch really rich character and story elements emerge. I see this a lot in organizations that put a premium on sprints and MVPs. It's one thing to put time constraints on refinement, evolution and optimization of an idea. It's another to rush the ideation itself. That's typically not a good recipe for innovation, since (as my example illustrates) when people are rushed, they tend to regurgitate/replicate the familiar. There is something to be said for putting some time constraints on ideation as a generative exercise. And when facilitated with a focus on lateral connections sparking new combinations, there is a way to hack novelty at pace. But often the main value is in getting all the obvious ideas out of the way, and getting the gears turning in the back of brains to let time do its work of mental marination. Then the real gems that team members can't stop thinking about can be prototyped/MVP'd/etc. Have you seen rapid ideation produce novel concepts (in product, comms, org design, etc.)? Or has it tended to churn out ideas that feel like replications/regurgitations, logical/linear progressions and slight incremental improvements on what already exists? #innovation #creativity #ideation #agile #mvp #prototyping #poc

Make stuff like Sleep Token does🤘🏻. Don't know Sleep Token? They're a metal band that has blown-up in recent years for a variety of reasons; smart marketing, The Algorithm and, honestly, they f*cking rock🪨. But another thing really working for them is they somehow blend metal with pop, hip-hop, jazz and prog-rock. So many styles that shouldn't all belong together, but they gorgeously weave these genres into musical tapestries that challenge any pre-conceived notions while still feeling like one piece of music. Simply, they're ✨dynamic✨. Being dynamic adds depth, creates thoughtful space and fires up our brain and heart to think and feel differently. If you're making a video, film, podcast, script or whatever, keep things interesting without straying away from your core message or theme. Get weird, be playful, mash some unrelated words and images together to see what the vibe is. Things are boring when they're a single tone. F*ck around and find out, as they say. Your "TOP 10 Generative AI Headlines of the Week for the Media & Entertainment Industry" (as of 8/2/24): (1) You knew I'd feature a generative AI Olympics story this week. And I wouldn't want to disappoint! Google’s genAI-focused Olympics ad went viral for all the wrong reasons. It wasn't sentimental (its apparent intent). It was tone deaf. Let’s face it. The Olympics are all about real human emotion. And genAI created notes from fathers to athletes about their daughters aren’t exactly the real thing. Come on dads out there. You can do better! (2) But #Google’s AI-lympics antics aren’t the only genAI Big Tech fail. Meta joins the club. Zuck’s company just scrapped its celebrity AI chatbots for lack of interest. Apparently superfans also want the real thing. (3) Microsoft (yes OpenAI’s “owner”) calls for new laws on AI-generated deepfakes. Kudos to them! Meanwhile, bipartisan Senators (shocking, I know!) introduced the “NO FAKES ACT,” which would create a new federal IP right that gives victims of deepfakes and voice clones the right to sue. (4) Oh yes, and relatedly, #OpenAI pledges to give the U.S. AI Safety Institute early access to its next model. Has CEO Sam Altman found new religion? My Magic 8-Ball says “signs point to doubtful.” But let’s be optimists. (5) #Microsoft and TikTok — two great tastes that taste great together? Apparently! TikTok’s spending reportedly drives Microsoft's booming AI business, which means TikTok also drives OpenAI’s business. So what happens if the #TikTok ban gets real? Talk amongst yourselves. (6) If Pink Floyd’s third member can’t do it, maybe AI can? Nick Mason, the legendary band’s drummer, said that perhaps an “AI situation” could bring feuding bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters together to make new music. In other words, maybe pigs really can fly! (7) It’s not a game. It’s a sad state of AI-ffairs. Once again, we now see more Hollywood pAIn. Now video game performers are on strike, largely due to issues related to generative AI. (8) It’s simply unnatural … and it shows. Visual examples abounded this week to jarringly showcase what happens when #AI models train on AI-generated material (aka “synthetic” content). The results ain’t pretty. What does this mean? Means that genAI companies need real, human, quality content. Content owners, hear that? They need you. (9) Maybe not that innocent? Canva — the seemingly innocuous design platform — reportedly plans to acquire an AI startup criticized for generating deepfake porn. Not great optics there. (10) It’s Cuebric, not Stanley Kubric, to you! The leading genAI virtual set pre-visualization company just released “Generative Mesh,” a new tech package that “aims to revolutionize digital background creation and environment-building.” Want more? There may be a new way for media companies to profit financially from generative AI companies. The Financial Times, Axel Springer, The Atlantic, Fortune, and Universal Music Group have all agreed to license their content to ProRata.ai, a gen AI startup that claims it can accurately attribute and share revenues with content owners from AI chatbot subscriptions. The plan is to launch a chatbot search engine and then split revenues evenly from subscriptions with its content licensing partners. They’ve already patented an algorithm to attribute every individual output from the chatbot to a content owner's work. ProRata also just raised $25 million, and this could be a great way to provide fair compensation to media partners for their content. Despite some deals being struck between some media companies and AI companies like OpenAI and Perplexity, publishers are very concerned – to the point of filing lawsuits – that their content has been used illegally to train AI models. We’ll see how that shakes out in court, but at this point a rev share on consumer consumption is a smart idea for both sides.
