It's OFFICIAL. ✨ I made it through the Venture Institute program for aspiring venture capitalists. The program has been a very instrumental part of my VC journey. Over the last two and a half months, I have mastered topics like… 🟢 The impact of venture capital and venture builders in the NYC ecosystem 🟢 Term sheets, including what they encompass, how to read one, what each of the terms mean, and some “red flags” to watch out for 🟢 Venture entities and how they relate to one another 🟢 How to create a VC fund thesis 🟢 The startup investment process and how to leverage my existing skills to enable that process for a fund 🟢 The power law and what a power law portfolio really looks like (I also created a hypothetical portfolio based on the power law) 🟢 The 2 and 20 VC model, its importance, and how some funds may adjust the model while fundraising 🟢 Management fees, their uses, and they’re impact on a fund 🟢 American vs. European waterfalls 🟢 Calculating fund metrics like TVPI and IRR and why they're important 🟢 Portfolio construction models 🟢 Sourcing LPs and managing relationships with them (one of my favorite exercises from this program! I have truly been working 7 days a week to break into VC and while a LinkedIn post doesn't fully capture all the work I've put into this career transition, I do want to make sure I celebrate the turning of the page. I'm on the lookout for full-time Associate roles at early-stage consumer and FinTech-focused VC funds. I'm also very passionate about supporting and investing in female founders. If you know a GP who's hiring in these spaces and could use someone with my skills, I would appreciate an intro. 🫶🏽

With the return of retail trading that is evident by Robinhood's dynamite earnings announcement yesterday (see: https://lnkd.in/ewgRkrv9), I thought it might be a good time to share my most recent publication. My co-authors (Andrew Lynch and Matthew Crook) and I recently had our article "Retail and institutional trading during a COVID-19 presidential press conference" published in the Journal of Economics and Finance (link: https://lnkd.in/eXmnz5gB) This article has a bit of a unique backstory. During the height of the chaos surrounding the pandemic, two days after the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic, then President Trump hosted a press conference during which he had the CEOs of several U.S. firms discuss how they would aid the response to COVID-19. I was working from home as classes had gone fully virtual and I happened to walk by the TV as the press conference interrupted whatever had been previously showing. I remember thinking to myself at that time that the stock for the firms the CEOs were representing were going to skyrocket as this was the best "commercial" possible. Retail investing was booming as individuals were sitting at home and platforms such as Robinhood were growing rapidly and making retail investing even easier. These same retail investors tend to be overly drawn to attention-grabbing events, which this press conference was at a massive scale. Following the event, I started playing with the data. First, I identified which of the firms the CEOs represented were publicly traded. Then, I began to explore what data was available that would allow me to explore the response to the event, but with specific attention to retail trading. Luckily, during this time period Robinhood (made up of essentially only retail investors) was still releasing data on the number of users that held each individual stock. Within days, I had created the graph attached to this post which demonstrates the spike in Robinhood ownership of the firms around the press conference. All eight publicly traded firms represented had experienced substantial increases in ownership on Robinhood during the exact time period the press conference was occurring. However, for the firms that retail investors would have been less likely to already be paying attention to, the results were even more pronounced - for example, LabCorp nearly tripled the number of Robinhood users owning its stock relative to the previous day (approximately 189% ownership growth in a 2-day window, with almost all of the growth happening in one hour!). In our paper, my co-authors and I further explore the trading of these stocks around the press conference by looking at retail vs institutional trading activity in the time window for these firms. The data speaks volumes (h/t HolonIQ). Despite $80B invested over the past decade, the EdTech sector is experiencing a dramatic downturn in VC funding. In Q1 2024, global EdTech VC dropped by 90% compared to the peak in 2021—totaling just $580M. Even with the AI revolution commanding attention and driving innovation, it hasn’t been enough to sustain the growth seen in previous years. Countries like China, the USA, and India, which led investment over the last 10 years, are now witnessing sharp declines. Are we still open for business? This is a most confusing moment in our sector. In her first post as TLG'S Senior Partner, Melissa Banks (GAICD, IEAA SF) breaks it all down. Last  week I had the opportunity to consider the impacts successive migration, student visa, and international education policy changes have had on the most important stakeholders of all - students. Students read the same media we do. Much of the media commentary has been less than helpful in assuring students that they are welcome in Australia . Most importantly, we must remain to be seen as a high quality education proposition. Students are confused about the deluge of changes to student visa requirements: processing delays, increased refusals, measures to address visa hopping, visa fee hikes, and the introduction of provider limits (caps). They consider these changes to be unfair, limiting their choices, and diminishing their future prospects to study overseas. Students are frustrated about the lack of consultation with them. Australia is now seen as less welcoming and friendly. Of particular concern is the decline in sentiment associated with the quality of Australia's education outcomes. International students are powerful consumers. They vote with their feet. (And their boarding passes). If they perceive Australia as less welcoming, more restrictive, a poorer quality destination, or likely to produce poorer outcomes - they will simply go elsewhere. The impacts of tighter student and migration policy settings and provider limits (caps) are already playing out in Canada. Caps are rapidly transitioning to targets as students choose more favourable and welcoming destinations. Australia seems destined towards the same fate. Policy makers, sector representatives, peak bodies, and institutions urged to consider students. Greater transparency concerning new visa settings is urgently required. Public debate between government and sector players must be mindful of who is accessing and interpreting content. Australia’s international education sector is a national success story that positions us as a knowledge and innovation economy. As we all take a much-needed break this summer, I wanted to share three important lessons I learned and expanded upon during my first year of MBA at Emory University - Goizueta Business School. **Write to your future self** 📝 At the very start of the program, we were asked to write a short letter to our future selves. In the letter, we had to outline our personal and professional goals for the next six months. I have been practicing goal-setting since college, and I deeply believe in its benefits, but this was the first time I wrote a full letter to myself. When I read this letter six months later to conclude this activity, I was amazed by how much my perspectives and thought process had changed over that period. Most of the goals I thought mattered six months prior no longer seemed as important to me; there were new goals that meant more. **Build a strong followership** 🧱 During this stage of our careers, as we slowly start to transition from being followers to becoming leaders, it becomes imperative to bring others along on the journey with us. We strive to work with and learn from the best leaders. At the same time, we should focus on becoming the leaders we aspire to be. Thus, we need to be able to articulate our vision to find, nurture, and lead talented teams and individuals. Building a strong followership is about creating a culture of trust, respect, and mutual growth. **Feedback is a gift** 🎁 There is no escaping feedback, in business school or in life. We all know how great it feels to be told how well we are doing or about the things we excel at. It is never as pleasant to be told that we are lacking in certain areas. As difficult as the process of learning to give and accept feedback can be, both positive and constructive feedback are critical accelerators of one’s career. Embracing feedback with an open mind allows us to continually improve and adapt in a rapidly changing environment. Some important wisdom. Work is about people (not just public policy - all work). Being willing to change your mind, to listen and understand other points of view and to take your work but not yourself seriously. Apple makes headlines again with its monumental $110 billion share buyback program, marking the largest in market history and potentially reducing share count by ~600 million shares. Two intriguing observations emerge: 1) Apple's average annual share price performance saw a shift before and after the initiation of share buybacks.Before Apple started buying back its own shares(2006-2012), its stock price tended to grow at a faster rate each year. However, since it began buying back shares in 2012, that growth rate has slowed down by about 10% each year on average. 2) Concurrently, the stock's valuation multiple experienced a significant uptick over the past five years, coinciding with escalated share buybacks.Over the last five years, as Apple bought back more and more of its own shares, the price investors were willing to pay for each share increased. This means that even though Apple was spending a lot of money on buying back shares, investors were still valuing each share more highly. In simpler terms, Apple has been spending a lot of money on buying its own shares, but it hasn't been able to find other ways to invest its cash that would give better returns.
