After guiding several companies through FedRAMP, I've learned one crucial lesson: choosing your Third-Party Assessment Organization (3PAO) isn't just a checkbox - it's a strategic decision that should happen early in your journey. Here's what many don't realize: waiting until the last minute to select your 3PAO can lead to costly delays and unnecessary stress. I've seen organizations rush this decision only to face challenges that could have been avoided with proper planning. The secret sauce? Partner with a FedRAMP implementation advisor BEFORE selecting your 3PAO. Here's why: • They understand the nuances of different 3PAOs and can help match you with one that fits your specific needs • They can help prepare your documentation and systems properly, making the eventual 3PAO assessment smoother • Their experience can help you avoid common pitfalls that often lead to assessment delays • You'll likely save time and money in the long run by getting things right the first time Think of it this way: You wouldn't run a marathon without a training plan and coach. Good points raised by James Anderson and Ken Mills on some of the challenges in the industry. "When TSDs' margins on deals shrink to resemble credit card processing fees, the level of service to partners is impacted, potentially leading to a less stable channel overall" Consistently passing through over 90%+ of vendor commissions to selling agents is unsustainable. Vendors may need to reevaluate the TSDs they work with, setting minimum criteria for the marketing, sales, and tech support required in their TSD contracts. Failure to do so could push those same vendors to engage more agents directly on their own commission contracts, shifting the support services' responsibility from the TSDs to the vendor. The prevailing high commission pass-through trend will drive the industry towards a significant distribution model change and policy overhaul.
