'Mapping the Plastic' was one of the most impressive sessions I attended at the recent FIG Working Week in Accra, Ghana. Under guidance of Simon Ironside and Gordana Jakovljevic delegates dived deep into the polluted ocean and possible solutions to solve the immense plastics problem. A few horrifying facts: WWF estimates that in 2050 the total weight of plastics in the ocean will exceed the total weight of all the fish in that same water! 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year and that equates to 15 tonnes of plastic entering every minute!! Single use plastic is one of the major contributors to the problem, at present especially in Asia and Africa, but obviously countries that are less polluting now, have contributed in the past; 75% of all the plastic produced since 1950 ended up as garbage, much of dumped into the oceans. Luckily there was room for a bit of optimism as well. Commission 4 (Hydrography) and the Young Surveyors Network of FIG have taken up the challenge, developing a method to detect, extract and classify floating plastic as small as 1cm2 from UAV orthophotos using deep learning AI algorithms - and getting providing more insights in where it is and where it comes from. That will enable policy-making and monitoring results in a positive way. Our Planet is Awakening. Many have recently Awakened. Others have been Awake for a while. Some even come to this Timeline at birth already Awakened. Truth be told, there have always been Awakened souls on Gaia. So, what makes this Awakening so much different. The main factor is the sheer numbers involved. This is a mass Awakening. So much so, that I am seeing a prominent shift in my coaching practice, In the past few years I have solely worked with Heart Centered entrepreneurs who wanted to move their business in new directions. Or, I would assist those who were struggling to find their Purpose in life. Nowadays, a large percentage of my client base, is working with individuals who have Awakened, but are struggling with this unique transition. It is not all fun and games. Many are having a very difficult time coming to terms with this new reality. Some feel frightened. Or confused. Others feel they are suffering delusional thoughts as if they are going mad. Many need some sort of confirmation to ease their pre programmed mind. And I see this Awakening coaching or Ascension coaching becoming more mainstream in the near future. It is a Thing! We are indeed living in Extraordinary times. With every passing moment, more and more of us are Awakening and eventually the World will take notice. We are evolving in real time. It is only a matter of time before the data collectors take notice, if they haven't already. Early adapters are popping up everywhere and eventually the corporate world will 'buy in'. Expect shifts as Marketers will undoubtedly hop on board and take advantage of this latest trend. Yup, it is definitely a Thing. How do you restore nature through a regenerative business approach? At House of Hackney Garden of Tomorrow festival last week we heard how. Two panels in particular showed thought leadership and real examples of of regenerative business, House of Hackney Frieda Gormley Kellie Dalton Brontie Maria Ansell shared their journey and how they are transparently sharing in the open so others businesses can learn, ask and feel supported. So what they are doing is scalable and replicable 💪 House of Hackney has put nature on the board, meaning the impact on nature is considered at during board level decision-making, this sends a signal to all key stakeholders, internally & externally, including investors. Now they are looking at how this actively plays out in the 'business as usual', how to scale it and make it replicable for other businesses, here’s some of the work they are doing: 💚 Looking holistically across the core business functions - finance, sales , production, HR - and looking what is needed in each function to be regenerative 💚 Identifying how to report effectively and the success metrics, asking how are these useful for other businesses?  💚 Making nature restoration a core pillar & defining what this means for product innovation, supply chain, DEI etc 💚 Building in Nature royalties and capital flows - What is the ‘true cost’ of our products and business, where do we bank, what about our supply chain 💚 Looking at how to act as activists and influencers- for example their #Wearenature campaign to change the definition of nature in the English dictionary, how do we addressing green washing?  💚 How to embed this way for all our employees and close stakeholders so it is business as usual for all? (This is where my experience comes in and what I am excited about!) My addition, on how to make this 'business as usual' for employees is through developing employee.... 🧠 Mindsets (to want to, and belief in) + 🛠 skillsets (to be able to) = 😀 embed behaviours that are continually enacted. This is achieved though an employee development programme & by creating conducive behavioural environments to enable the new ways of working to thrive, for this apply the COM-B model (Susan Michie) where behaviour happens when the person has the conditions through the combination of: 1. Capability - refers to an individual’s psychological & physical ability to participate in an activity.  2. Opportunity - refers to external factors that make a behaviour possible.  3. Motivation -  refers to the conscious & unconscious cognitive processes that direct and inspire behaviour  For the case of regenerative business, for motivation, I believe embedding nature connection into the employee experience is imperative, because, summarising the famous quote from Sir David Attenborough if you do not know about nature, feel connected or appreciate it, you will not understand it, there you won’t protect it’ #leadership #regenerative #sustainability

It highlights a significant concern: global climate pledges currently require nearly 1 billion hectares of land for reforestation, afforestation, and ecosystem restoration—roughly two-thirds of the world’s cropland area. 🔍 Key insights from the study: - Massive Land Demand: To meet pledges, countries would need to convert vast areas to CDR projects, impacting food production, biodiversity, and rural communities. - Global Imbalance: Land-based CDR pressures are disproportionately high in regions with vulnerable ecosystems and Indigenous communities, particularly in the Global South, risking unintended socio-economic impacts. - Delay in Immediate Action: Heavy dependence on future land-based CDR and speculative technologies like BECCS risks slowing down immediate emissions reductions—an essential part of any climate strategy. 🔍 The Path Forward: The authors call for greater transparency in national climate pledges, prioritizing realistic land-use goals and ambitious near-term emissions cuts. As the Nature COP kicks off in Colombia, it’s crucial that we focus on key outcomes: reforming subsidies, mobilizing effective finance, and ensuring robust measurement and monitoring of nature. If we’ve learned anything from tackling #climate and #carbon, it’s that clear definitions, strong metrics, transparency, and accountability are essential for success. A step up from my usual co-working space mugs. 😂 💡 Climate Leaders Forum met for the 2nd time, but, this year at the House of Lords. They convened CSOs, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders in a format which is fast becoming my favourite to organise and host: Roundtables. ✅  I appreciated the format: half-day, topic focus, multiple sectors, real discussions - plus an impressive meat-free menu. 😋 🍒 What worked well was setting up the stage for deeper roundtable conversations with thought-provoking experts. In our case, that meant some very sobering reflections from Lord Adair Turner, made easier with some much-needed good humour, and two personal heroes of mine - Nike's ex-CSO and now The Earthshot Prize CEO Hannah Jones and John Elkington who has just published his 21st book. Those are big numbers - may governments around the world take heed (and it looks like Canada's on a good path): 🌳Nature-based solutions can provide 37% of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement targets. 🌳 Nature restoration can decrease the intensity of climate hazards globally by 26%.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗢𝗣 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴?   (𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁). Here’s the harsh reality: Companies show up to COP with ambitious goals,   but leave with a handful of empty promises. The real issue?   They focus on the speeches and panels,   but miss the one thing that changes everything:  𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 Without these, their big ideas don’t go anywhere. Here’s what should happen instead: - Target key collaborators before the event. - Join smaller sessions for 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. - Follow up 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 after COP ends. Eye opening to see the equivalent emissions an average day of eating should be for us to meet the Paris agreement compared to the 'cost' of different meals at Climate Fresk Good news, on average we are doing reasonably well, and there's definitely room for eating a variety of meals from from carnivorous to vegan. Flexitarian ftw! 👍 Bad news, we are not all contributing equally to this global goal, and perhaps we can all be more mindful about taking a balanced approach to eating for our own health as well as that of the planet. Final newsflash ⚡ - generally speaking the food miles (how far it travels from being grown to us eating it) is a minute proportion of the emissions associated with it. Most comes from producing it! I will still endeavour to eat local where possible as there are other positive benefits from supporting the local community and knowing exactly where and how your food gets to you that just gets harder the further away and more hands or goes through. What are you going to eat? 🤔

Everybody knows about the regular forests. Precious, wild places; biodiversity hotspots, in need of our protection. Forests are the lungs of the planet! They play critical role in carbon storage. They also make rain, bind soils and filter our drinking water. And they're under increasing pressure from land-clearers and Big Ag, climate change, fires, unsustainable logging ... it's a hot button issue that's often in the news. But the urban forest ... What even is that? It's the magic next door. If you live in a city, town or a suburb, it's the trees, shrubs and supporting groundcover that grow all around you. The canopy outside your window. Street trees. The nature reserve. Your local park. Your backyard. By 2030, up to 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. As well as oxygen and wildlife habitat, trees provide vital shade and cool our streets. They also make us happier. Being in green spaces can reduce our stress levels. Nature, of course, has always known. Trees are life. Yet old habits die hard. We’ve long been proud of chopping them down. Sometimes, for good reason. Others, not so much. Last year, more than 1700 trees were illegally vandalised in the city where I live. Read that again. It's not a typo: 1700 TREES! Poisoned across Sydney. Hacked down in the dead of night. Broken, snapped, chainsawed, cleared without permission... I'm making a doco to help turn this story around, and I'd love your help. Let's be 100% (re-iterate 100%) clear that Nature is on the brink, which means our Society and Economy, which is utterly dependent on it, is on the brink too. Latest WWF #LivingPlanet Report shows that globally wildlife populations have plummeted on average by 73% over the last 50 years, in Latin America and the Caribbean 95%. Wealthy nations have outsourced their voracious consumption of nature to poorer countries, desperate for income to help their populations to develop. Dangerous tipping points are being approached - we have already lost 17% of the Amazon, hit 20-25% loss and we're almost certainly at a point of no return. What do we need to do: 1. Decarbonise rapidly 2. Move finance away from destructive practices 3. Transform the food system. The UK can take a lead on this by creating urgently a strategic approach to land use x food production x our overseas consumption footprint.
