☀️ Announcing our call for proposals: PPA renewable energy research support ☀️ As part of its commitment to a carbon-neutral campus by 2042, the University of Pennsylvania entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with energy company AES to develop solar arrays that would generate enough energy to fulfill 70% of the campus and health system electricity needs. Under the PPA, AES is generously supporting related educational efforts at Penn through the PPA Renewable Energy Research Program run by the Environmental Innovations Initiative. We are now accepting proposals for grant support for education and/or training associated with the technical, operational, and economic aspects of renewable energy and energy storage. Funded projects may include research directly related to the AES solar energy project or projects and activities focused more broadly on education and training related to renewable energy in all its aspects. For our Tech Tuesday, a report form Renewable Energy World on research around grid-forming inverters to enhance grid stability. "Researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and their collaborators have created new models meant to allow power system engineers to evaluate how a new technology, the grid-forming inverter, would work on the grid to improve grid stability. The new models, REGFM_A1 and REGFM_B1 — developed by PNNL in collaboration with multiple inverter manufacturers, software vendors, and power system planners — were recently approved by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), which oversees the nation’s western power grid. WECC’s approval makes these models the first industry-approved, publicly available grid-forming inverter models that are integrated into utilities’ everyday simulation tools used worldwide, such as Siemens PSSE or PowerWorld Simulator, among others. The integrations give transmission planners access to the models to perform planning studies, PNNL said, especially for those studies where vendor-specific models are unavailable. The models represent two mainstream grid-forming technologies used in the industry: droop control and virtual synchronous machine control."
