I spent a good portion of 2023 working with my colleagues at UML, WPI, and Yale to scope the COMPARE ecosystem under a NSF POSE Phase I award. Early Education Leaders, an Institute at UMass Boston, IN THE NEWS: Our Executive Director Prof. Anne Douglass was a featured expert in WalletHub’s analysis of ECE systems in the U.S. The piece ranks the best and worst early education systems in the U.S. based on 12 metrics, including share of school districts that offer a state pre-K program, number of pre-K quality benchmarks met, and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K. (Massachusetts ranked 48 on the list; Arkansas ranked first.) Prof. Douglass addressed topics such as the influences on a child’s educational development, the relationship between education spending and quality, and how policymakers could improve ECE systems without raising taxes, and the five most important indicators for evaluating ECE systems. Congratulations to Boston University CISE Affiliates Wenchao Li, Andrew Sabelhaus, and Rabia Tugce Yazicigil on receiving the prestigious 2024 NSF CAREER Award. Wenchao Li’s (ECE, SE, CS) research focused on specification-guided imitation learning (IL). Li uses a combination of formal methods and machine learning to build safe and trustworthy autonomous systems. Yale Engineering will welcome Kathryn Guarini ’94 (Applied Physics) back to campus this fall as our first Senior Fellow. Guarini, the former CIO of IBM, will teach a new course entitled Disruptive Technologies and Responsible Innovation. "I believe that infusing industry perspective into the classroom is important to help students grasp and get excited by the breadth of real-world challenges and opportunities," Guarini said. Eric Schmidt came to Princeton yesterday for a lively discussion about artificial intelligence with provost and computer scientist Jennifer Rexford and many graduate and undergraduate students. He talked about his new co-authored book "Genesis: Artificial Intelligence, Hope, and the Human Spirit" and took questions from students about the role of AI in many areas, including historical research, the developing world, and national security. Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center fellows and co-lead paper authors Jiaqi Zhang (MIT EECS PhD student) and Ryan Welch (MIT master’s student in engineering), joined by senior author and Schmidt Center Director Caroline Uhler, have developed theoretical foundations for methods that could identify the best way to aggregate genes into related groups, so they can efficiently learn the underlying cause-and-effect relationships between many genes. This cost-effective and more feasible technique could help scientists identify potential gene targets to induce certain behavior in a more accurate and efficient manner, potentially enabling them to develop precise treatments for patients. Congratulations to Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty members Nancy Kanwisher, Robert Langer, and Sara Seager on being among eight researchers worldwide to receive this year’s Kavli Prizes. A partnership among the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and The Kavli Foundation, The Kavli Prizes are awarded every two years to “honor scientists for breakthroughs in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience that transform our understanding of the big, the small and the complex.” Specific to the nano world, Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor, was awarded the 2024 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience. Langer was the first to develop nanoengineered materials that enabled the controlled release, or regular flow, of drug molecules. This capability has had an immense impact for the treatment of a range of diseases, such as aggressive brain cancer, prostate cancer, and schizophrenia. His work also showed that tiny particles, containing protein antigens, can be used in vaccination, and was instrumental in the development of the delivery of messenger RNA vaccines. The Rutgers Computer Science Department is pleased to announce Professor Hao Wang is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (R01) for his proposal “Counterfactual Explanations for AI-Assisted Cancer Diagnosis and Subtyping.” Accurate diagnosis of cancer hinges on histopathological assessment, with treatment pivoting upon the tumor's morphological classification. AI models, especially deep learning (DL) models, have shown great promise in accurately classifying tumors from histopathological images (often with additional genomic information). Unlike typical medical images featuring small critical areas, histopathological images are textural, with relevant texture spanning the entire image, making it challenging to explain DL prediction by locating areas of an image. Such lack of explainability (and interpretability) severely limits DL's potential as a valuable tool to pathologists. Thus, there is a critical need to systematically explain DL histopathological models, beyond mere localization, to substantially improve AI-assisted cancer diagnosis for pathologists. This project aims to develop a principled framework to systematically explain DL histopathological models using counterfactual explanations. The total budget for this four-year project is $1.15M.
