Unity In Diversity is a diversity engagement event which operates in the interest of promoting unity through the understanding and appreciation of differences. Speakers are selected through a speaker competition. The winners give talks on their diversity experiences and hold a panel dialogue with the audience. The student population at the University of Nevada Reno is vast and varied, making diversity one of our greatest assets. UID asserts fundamentally that assimilation is not unity. Unity is instead the critical and conscious move of individuals and communities toward mindfulness, understanding and compassion. We find that thinking critically of differences enhances the lives of individuals and communities and drives us to new ideas, technologies, and widened perspectives. We set the stage for speakers to communicate their own diversity experiences; we promote the experiencing of a diverse array of cuisines; and finally, we provide a space to meet new friends and colleagues.
