USC Viterbi School of Engineering INF521 Applications of Cryptography and Cryptanalysis So, I came across this post in Software Development Times today announcing new cryptographic algorithms. NIST, as announced the approval of three post-quantum cryptographic algorithms that cannot be broken by a quantum computer. I'm wondering what they're saying is this true? The standards include three post-quantum cryptographic algorithms: two of them, ML-KEM (originally known as CRYSTALS-Kyber) and ML-DSA (originally CRYSTALS-Dilithium) were developed by IBM researchers in collaboration with several industry and academic partners. The third published algorithm, SLH-DSA (initially submitted as SPHINCS+) was co-developed by a researcher who has since joined IBM. Additionally, a fourth IBM-developed algorithm, FN-DSA (originally called FALCON), has been selected for future standardization. Most major tech companies are at Computex in Taiwan this week, and we're seeing a flood of announcements. The industry is buzzing following Jensen Huang's announcement of the next-generation Rubin GPU platform and associated Vera Arm CPUs. These will replace Grace, Hopper, and Grace Hopper as NVIDIA's scalable AI platform in 2026 and beyond. It's excellent to see NVIDIA honor another woman in science with their platform names, in this case American astronomer Vera Rubin who passed away in 2016. #Rundown #Computex #AI

There were no survivors after FOSS Force's Christine Hall took a torch to the Open Source Initiative (OSI)'s Open Source AI Definition (OSAID) earlier today. - “Will the partnership with Eclipse help OSI understand that the Open Source AI Definition fails to meet just about any open-source smell test?” - Will Eclipse Foundation be able to put out the rapidly growing fire, or is their common board-level connection — a recurring theme in OSAID astroturfers — just fanning the flames with this MoU? - Did either organisations' membership sign-off on this, or was it yet another unilateral board-level decision? - And what will the Internal Revenue Service make of this incessant non-profit lobbying? So many questions, so few answers. Hopefully Mike Milinkovich and team know what they're signing up for, but my feeling is they've been misled on it like the rest of us, including the minority co-designers who also need the source (i.e., data) to assess and address ethical issues in AI including bias and fairness. Quantum Leap in Chicago The country's first utility-scale quantum computer is slated to be built on the site of a former steel mill in Chicago's South Side, Mayor Brandon Johnson said yesterday. The computer is part of a broader $9B quantum research campus projected to bring $20B in investment and 175,000 jobs over the coming decades. Quantum computers can surpass even the most powerful supercomputers available today, improving encryption and expediting the development of new drugs (see more, w/video). Silicon Valley startup PsiQuantum's facility will use photons—particles of light—to perform calculations, an approach not yet commercially proven. This comes in contrast to techniques relying on ultracold atoms or superconducting circuits used in existing quantum computers by Google, IBM, and others. The 300,000-square-foot facility will become the anchor tenant of the proposed Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, a new vision for the abandoned steel mill there (see history). The project, one of the earliest public-private partnerships for quantum computing in the US, will see roughly $500M in public investment from federal, state, and city budgets.
