🌍 Global Food & Beverage Trends – August 2024 Insights 🌱 According to Innova Market Insights, several key trends are shaping the global food and beverage landscape: 1️⃣ Probiotics in Infant Nutrition From July 2023 to June 2024, 79% of newly launched infant nutrition products globally (especially infant formula) contained probiotics. Of these, 40% included Bifidobacterium, and 19% featured Bifidobacterium BB-12. Digestive and gut health are the primary focus of new product development in this sector. 2️⃣ Health Innovations with Plant-Based Ingredients Between 2019 and 2024, dietary supplements and sports nutrition products containing plant-based ingredients saw a 6% increase in global launches. From July 2023 to June 2024, 64% of these launches were dietary supplements, with cacao powder being the most common ingredient. Key positioning includes immune health (23%), brain and mood health (22%), and energy & endurance (22%). 3️⃣ The Rise of CBD and Alternatives in Supplements From April 2019 to March 2024, 81% of CBD product launches fell into the plant and herbal supplement category. Melatonin supplements containing CBD showed the highest growth, increasing by 73%. Additionally, 44% of these supplements targeted brain and mood health, while supplements for sexual health experienced the fastest growth. 4️⃣ Innovation in Fruit & Vegetable Products Fruit and vegetable product innovation has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 4% from April 2019 to March 2024. 68% of new launches were vegetable products, with a 5% growth rate over the past five years, while fruit products also showed steady growth at 3%. 5️⃣ Circular Ingredients on the Rise From April 2019 to March 2024, food and beverage product launches featuring circular ingredients grew by 47% annually. The top categories for these launches were bakery products, snacks, and cereals. "Low public awareness opens up new opportunities for highlighting milk as an iodine dietary source" A recent study published in the Journal of Dairy Science highlights that while #dairy milk is a rich source of #iodine, consumer awareness of this fact is low, presenting an untapped commercial opportunity for dairy producers through better #labeling. The research analyzed responses from over 4,000 people globally, finding that most consumers—regardless of age or background—did not associate milk with iodine. Instead, they believed fish, seafood, and incorrectly, cereals and meat, were key sources of iodine. Iodine is a crucial mineral necessary for #thyroid hormone production, and its deficiency can lead to health issues like #hypothyroidism. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, even a slight iodine deficiency can negatively affect a child’s #cognitive development. Although dairy #milk is a major source of iodine, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, where it accounts for up to half of iodine intake, consumers remain largely unaware of this fact. Survey results showed that consumers had the least awareness of milk’s iodine content. Researchers concluded that low public awareness of milk’s iodine benefits could be due to the limited accessibility of information. They suggested that clearer packaging labels highlighting iodine content, along with public awareness campaigns, could help bridge this knowledge gap. DOI: 10.3168/jds.2024-25030

As consumer demand and knowledge are increasing, so is the challenge for a D2C nutrition brand to accelerate the overall health experience for its consumers.     The inaugural Voice of the Consumer Survey 2024 by PwC states that - 71% of consumers surveyed are expected to increase their personal spending on health and beauty in the next 6 months.    The health-conscious consumer is evolving at an extremely fast pace and brands need to keep up to build a holistic experience to build their loyalty amongst consumers.    On this month’s edition of #FoundersEdit, our Co-founder Saurabh Kapoor shares insights on how to truly connect with today’s health-conscious consumer?   1.    How do you feel the wellness consumer has changed over the years?    The wellness consumer has changed dramatically in recent years, redefining health and wellness beyond exercise and dieting. They’re more informed and demand higher quality and transparency. Wellness is now highly personal, with people seeking solutions that align with their values.   This is not just the case in metro cities. Tier 2 and 3 markets too are moving towards a health-conscious lifestyle.     2.    How do you capture the attention of such a selective audience and turn them into loyalists of the brand?    Today’s health-conscious consumers prioritize knowledge and transparency. They don’t just pick products off the shelf—they research ingredients to find solutions for their specific needs. They explore the science behind products, understand their benefits, and seek validation. While they consider recommendations from friends and family, they always back their choices with personal research.   3.    What are some ways to elevate the experience of a consumer in a fast-paced D2C health brand?    No two consumers are alike! Understanding the unique benefits and solutions each customer seeks allows brands to cater to their needs more effectively and communicate more meaningfully. A customer becomes a loyal consumer when trust and emotional connection are established. Equally important is consistently monitoring data and feedback, brands can refine their strategies, build stronger relationships, and drive long-term loyalty. It’s important to have a conversation with your consumer to understand their needs and preferences.
