THREE (3) REASONS LOCAL TV NEWS IS THE MOST TRUSTED & VALUED By Hadassa Gerber In a year of the unpredictable, where a presidential election can be rearranged in the blink of an eye, hurricanes can make their entrance in the unprecedented month of June and the economic outlook weighs heavily on consumers – audiences may wonder where to turn for consistent, reliable news. A recent study commissioned by TVB and conducted by Dynata sheds light on just how crucial local TV news remains in the daily lives of its viewers across America. The study, which surveyed over 3,000 respondents, unearthed several compelling insights that underscore the pivotal role of local broadcast TV in people's lives: A Trusted Source Local broadcast TV was the most trusted news source while social media was the least trusted. Whether someone is experiencing severe weather, following a sports team, or tracking a key election race, most respondents turn to local broadcast TV news to keep them informed. The study also found that 76 percent of those who use station websites/apps also consume local TV news on television, highlighting the complementary role these platforms play in viewers' media diets. As several of our studies have shown, it's not "either or," it's "and." Localism: Strong Connection with their Communities Among its viewers, local broadcast TV news is the number one source for news, not just local news, but all news in general. And why is that? Local TV stations have cultivated strong brands over decades, rooted in their ability to deliver news that is not only relevant but deeply connected to the communities they serve. Half of local news viewers select it as being the most involved in their local community. Eight out of 10, specifically cited hat they "want information that pertains to the area I live in" as the top reason for watching local TV. Viewer Commitment and Consistency Further, we found that nine out of 10 respondents watch local broadcast TV news at least once a week with most of them watching daily. They value it so much that 73 percent said they were likely to drop a provider or look for other options if they stopped carrying their local news station. Local broadcast TV news is the lifeblood of local communities. It is unique in its ability to deliver news from a local perspective, foster community engagement, and build enduring trust. Local broadcast TV provides a great venue for advertisers wanting to associate with a trusted, believable platform, to showcase their product and services. Listening To Audiences Is Key To Local TV’s Survival... Dustin Block - TV Newscheck The industry’s “gut” instinct for news must replace the audience’s actual information needs. During a recent family gathering, an uncle ambled up to me with a serious look in his eye and leaned in close. “You work in the media?” he asked during a party on a beautiful summer day. I nodded. He continued. “How much of what you report is made up?” Tense moment. I tried to lighten the mood. “About 50 percent,” I said, “but we’re never sure what half.” He stared me down, and I could see this was the wrong approach. As I tried to backpedal out of my joke, I’d locked in his belief that news was made up. One uncle a world doesn’t make, but this isn’t the first time I’d heard this profound doubt in the veracity of journalism. My rock-solid foundation of belief in local news as a force for good is not shared by all, perhaps even most. In a research project, I observed, a room full of young professionals expressing outright distrust for local TV news. One participant bluntly said, “If I see it’s a local news reporter, I don’t trust it.” They would rather get their news from their neighbors or the social accounts they follow. The toughest habit for local TV news leaders to break is the belief that they alone should decide what their audiences see. For years, high lead-ins and limited competition allowed this flawed approach to persist. But the landscape has changed, and it’s time for a fundamental shift in how local news directors operate. Many still rely heavily on “gut instinct,” believing it provides a mystical connection to the truth. However, the reality is that cognitive biases are real, and gut-driven decision-making is often dead wrong. As the Local Media Association’s Frank Mungeam wisely observed; “If you win with a 5 share, remember 95% of the market chose not to tune in.” Clinging to this instinctual, inward-facing mindset has led local news to its current predicament. News directors often claim they are data-driven, but the data is insular. Ratings, market research, and talent studies only scratch the surface, failing to paint a complete picture of their evolving audiences. These limited data points have become the walls of the local news prison, constraining innovation and keeping audiences at arm’s length. The problem is compounded by news leaders and producers living in hyper-informed environments, making coverage decisions for audiences with very different lives and concerns. Their “gut” is out of sync with the audiences they serve. Reaching the next generation of local viewers requires a fundamental shift: We need to listen. There are practical and painful, lessons that come from acting without actively listening. The recent, sad demise of Scripps News is one example. Many wonderfully brilliant minds worked on this service. It was an achievement in many ways, but likely fell apart when it came to meeting audience needs.

Facilitating – so much more than just managing a meeting. With my Community Broadcasting hat on, I recently spent the day being ’facilitated’. Bryce Ives had the challenge of leading a bunch of talkative diverse humans in an important discussion about the future of media, and boy did he do a great job! It got me thinking more about the art and skill of facilitating productive gatherings. Facilitation is a dry word to describe a process that is really quite magical. You have heard of 'cat herding'. Wrangling humans - particularly large numbers of humans - is even trickier! You might be thinking, how do I do that? You might even be terrified to try that for the first time. Learning at the feet of some inspiring facilitators (hello Heidi Martin, Kevin Nuttall, Randall Pearce, Paul Taylor, Nancy Hromin, Kate Chaffer and many more), here are a few tips if you find yourself in the facilitation hot seat for the first time: Be crystal clear about the outcome.🎯 What are you here to do? State it up front, test it with everyone, revisit it as the session goes on. There is nothing more dispiriting than a gab fest with no outcome. Bite sized chunks are your friend. 🧩 Plan the session ahead of time and don’t try to squeeze in too much. Imagine the session like you are giving directions – first you go here, then you go there. After a series of steps you get to the outcome. Try walking and talking. 👨🏼‍🦽 If ever I need ideas, I walk. Taking a stroll with a partner is a relaxed way to have a chat. Send your participants in pairs for a trot around the block and be surprised at what they come back with. Keep it pacey and upbeat. 🙂 Dwelling too long on anything is the enemy of good facilitation. ‘Hit it with pace’ as my favourite Bachelor used to say. Respect the group's time and energy. ⏱️ Keep an eye on the clock and check in on energy levels as you go. And beware the dreaded ‘afternoon slump’ - not even the mints will get you through that! Ads are different on podcasts - they work better. Jeff Ulster has an excellent summary of the arguments. Commercial TV has allowed a total ensh*ion of the experience as accountants try to figure out just how much they can push us before we leave the medium (the same goes for commercial radio). Pods have had a different ad culture - and if they stay protected, we are in good shape as an industry. But - the forces of darkness are gathering. I have noticed some of my favourite shows (talking about you Scott Galloway) now have 3 minute or more ad blocks. I used to enjoy his reads on shorter ad stacks, but now I skip them. I'm hooked on the show, so likely some algo will tell his people they could even do more, but at some point, it makes me resent the ads I do hear before hitting the skip button, which undermines the special power of podcast ads. Since pods are great at delivering niche audiences, it makes the case for branded content even stronger. You can gather a few thousand fans a day/week who care about your area of subject expertise and, since they are often spending 20-30 minutes per episode with you, create a different kind of relationship. In short - and I know everyone who works in the medium knows this, but it bears repeating - if you want to form a genuine relationship with your customers, pods are effective. https://lnkd.in/gZhM4J8W
