Situationships: What They Are and 5 Signs You’re in One : “Situationship” isn’t a word you’ll find in the dictionary, but it’s hard to avoid in popular culture. So, what is it exactly? According to psychologist Dr. Susan Albers, a situationship is a romantic relationship that hasn’t been formalized. “Situationships are characterized by a lack of obligation or exclusivity, but the real hallmark is a lack of clear boundaries or labels,” she explains. “There are elements of friendship and romance, but they exist without defining the relationship. So, essentially, you have many of the benefits of a traditional relationship without having to make a commitment.” As you can imagine, this kind of attachment has upsides and downsides. One the one hand, situationships may allow you to feel the sense of connection you’d experience in a standard-issue relationship and the independence that comes with being single. On the other hand, if you’re not clear on the nature of your involvement, it can’t progress. It’s difficult to maintain, emotionally. For further reading :

This article highlights the challenges corporations are and will continue to face if perceptions about this particular generation don't change. I agree with comments in the article that the problem isn't with the Gen Z employees themselves; it's the educational system, antiquated leadership expectations and entrenched corporate cultures that will fail them and in turn will impact companie's future talent for years to come. This generation will provide organizations with true digital native capabilities but we've not changed the way they are taught in school, they have been moved to "virtual classrooms" and "mass training" in universities where real world contact has been avoided and because of a global pandemic, they lost opportunities to engage in internships, job experiences that would have prepared them for the future. If anything, we owe them more time and care in onboarding and training to mold them into future employees and leaders. They are not lazy, in my opinion, they are operating in an unknown environment where expectations are either unclear or unrealistic creating fear that's manifesting as uncooperative or disengaged employees. As a learning professional, ensuring that my organization maximizes its talent pool, a small and wise investment in the onboarding process will reap benefits in the future. Retention concerns will continue to grow if organizations refuse to see the opportunity of building community, driving a sense of belonging while creating a safe space for all employees to learn and grow. While we can't fix the educational woes highlighted in the article, how we introduce new employees to our companies is within our ability to mold and influence. So, guess who just joined a "select group of strategic alliance professionals who have become Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals CA-AM certified?" This guy! 👈 This might have helped when I did BD in Federal government IT services. Haha. Anyway, I look to leverage these new skills in collaborative situations in the biopharma space. I can envision using these abilities to form those cross-sector collaborations we need to address those complex, sticky, wicked health equity problems.
