What a difference a dozen years make! In 2012, we created and launched the White House Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) program. We could barely imagine at that time the extent and rapidity of the progress that was about to occur in machine learning and related fields. But we believed deeply that having a pathway for getting technologists into high-impact public service mattered. Yesterday, as part of President Biden's AI Talent Surge, the US Government announced a new PIF cohort consisting exclusively of leading AI experts to help ensure that eight key departments -- Justice, State, OMB, DoD, and more -- responsibly develop and use AI tools in order to effectively achieve their missions on behalf of the American people. Just as every organization became a tech organization in recent decades, so too will they need to graft AI onto their DNA in order to meet the rising expectations of the public. I'm heartened that these AI PIFs answered the call and will now use their diverse backgrounds and invaluable experiences in data, systems design, governance, equity, and security to make sure that AI works for everyone. EPIPHANY: been re-reading David Deutsch and realize that mathematical proof falls into the category of Epiricism. Why? Because math has become another sense that is foundational for so many researchers, like eyesight. If they can see something with math, they unquestioningly believe it is true because their mathematical sense has become like a natural extension of how they see the world. Anyone who does not question what they can see with math is no more and no less than a 21st century empiricist who says “I can see it so it must be true.” Those of us who use math to describe what is true are also fundamentally egocentric and anthropocentric because we do not stop to consider that if others cannot see what they see and if others can defend contradictory explanations, then perhaps math is not a the best and only explanation of the world. As someone with a degree in economics and econometrics, this is a challenging post for me to write because I have relied for so long, unquestioningly, in the explanatory power of mathematics. Today I feel deeply challenged and enlightened. Taking a walk to prevent an existential crisis.

[tl;dr: Started the AI & Democracy Foundation (AIDF) & we are *hiring*!] Over the past year, I have been exploring the potential for a new foundation and research organization, with the goal of dramatically accelerating efforts to use high-quality democratic processes for critical decision-making on AI (and with AI). I had helped advocate for and support this kind of work with OpenAI, Meta, and others, and been in conversation with folks across governments and the UN. But it became clear that there was a real need to move *much* faster—assuming we wanted democratic capacity to keep pace with AI advances. That organization—the AI & Democracy Foundation—is now a reality! Great panel presentation on “Innovation, Adoption, and the Role of the Human Analysts” at #BerylElites conference this afternoon. Key point for me: Gen AI is an exciting tool for exploration and certain use cases, but platforms such as AlphaSense provide validated search across internal and external unstructured data expertly tagged to return the most relevant content appropriately sourced and auditable.

Meta’s all-white, all-male AI advisory is a stark reminder of the gaps that still exist in understanding the true essence of diversity. It’s not just about optics or fulfilling a quota—it’s about the broad, multifaceted perspectives that only a diverse group can bring. Homogenous groups are prone to groupthink, where similar experiences and perspectives can lead to blind spots. This is especially critical in AI, where the consequences of bias can be far-reaching and profound. For example, facial recognition technology has repeatedly shown racial bias, failing to accurately identify people of color. A diverse panel would catch these flaws early, ensuring more equitable outcomes. Understanding different triggers and sensitivities requires those who live them. Women, minorities and non-native speakers bring essential insights into how AI can perpetuate harmful stereotypes or unintentionally exclude people. Meta must reflect the diversity of the world it serves. True innovation and ethical responsibility demand it. I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to amplify the voices of leading women at the intersection of AI, policy, governance and ethics during New York Tech Week alongside Vital Voices Global Partnership. Every day we are inundated with new data and insights* on how women are at greater risk than ever before: gender-based violence moving from the physical to digital (e.g. deepfake revenge porn, online harassment), GenerativeAI that discriminates against women (e.g. amplifying regressive ideas and hate speech about women, or girls' careers as homemakers with tech designed and built by men) and misinformation threatening democracy and human rights across the world, accelerating conflict and violence, and the punishment of women that stand up to dictators, like the courageous Nobel Prize Winner Maria Ressa. Thank you to S. Mona Sinha, Camille François, Janet Haven and Manira Alva for speaking truth to power and for their service and stewardship in helping drive new laws and protections that are needed to ensure that AI acts as an enabling tool for women’s success, for advocating for gender diversity in tech leadership so that women and girls are heard, and for pushing tech companies for increased transparency and prioritization of features that are protective of women online. With these leaders at the helm, the future is bright! *some sample data and insights: 1. The World Economic Forum reported in 2023 that women accounted for just 29 per cent of all science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workers. Although more women are graduating and entering STEM jobs today than ever before, they are concentrated in entry level jobs and less likely to hold leadership positions. 2. A study by the Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender and Leadership analysed 133 AI systems across different industries and found that about 44% of them showed gender bias, and 25% exhibited both gender and racial bias. 3. Prominent women, such as US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have had their heads placed on a naked body in order to shame them. Schools have reported cases of teenage girls being subjected to the same treatment. 4. The bulk of AI-induced job losses will affect women without college degrees because those women disproportionately populate the entry-level jobs likely to be most affected by automation. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2027 there will be 26 million fewer jobs in roles such as administrators, cashiers, payroll clerks and secretaries. 5. This cutting of women’s jobs could have a knock-on effect on their ability to thrive into old age, exacerbating the 40% pension equity gap that already exists.
