Defending Digital Campaigns Michael Kaiser sheds light on the tactics used by bad actors in election interference, emphasizing their goal could be to sow chaos and apathy rather than influence voting. “They’re trying to divide us at another level,” he said. “For some bad actors, the misinformation and disinformation is not about how you vote. As our world gets more fraught and complex, audiences are increasingly choosing news sources which are more visual, reports are more watched, less read, with YouTube continuing its rise. The implications of this trend for deep understanding of difficult issues is worth pondering. More people are concerned about how to grapple with the rising torrent of fake news, and many having doubts about how AI might be deployed by newsrooms. Edelman has partnered with the Reuters Institute for this annual report as we are all in the business of communicating and good, credible and trusted information is critical to everyone in that process

This interesting announcement of a new alliance of content and data companies came out today. In their own words, "Seven content-licensing sellers of music, image, video and other datasets for use in training artificial intelligence systems have formed the sector's first trade group, they said on Wednesday. The Dataset Providers Alliance (DPA) will advocate for "ethical data sourcing" in the training of AI systems, including rights for people depicted in datasets and the protection of content owners' intellectual property rights, the companies said in a statement." This alliance is important for content creators because it helps protect their intellectual property rights and ensures they get fair compensation for their work used in AI technologies. AI Rising "...This year’s survey found a huge jump in the percentage of employees who said their companies are using AI: 53%, compared to 23% in 2022. But like everyone else, publishing employees are uneasy about the new technology. Only 25% of survey respondents believe AI will have a positive impact on their jobs, while 40% believe it will have a negative impact. Respondents were even more concerned about how AI will affect the industry in general: only 13% said they believe AI will change publishing for the better, while 56% think the technology will make it worse..."

The recent Poynter Institute summit highlights the urgent need for more hackathons in journalism. Co-facilitated with Kelly McBride, Alex Mahadevan, Tony Elkins from Poynter alongside Burt Herman and myself representing Hacks/Hackers, this event showcased the transformative potential of collaborative innovation. By convening over 50 diverse participants - including news editors, futurists, and product leaders - the summit exemplified how collective creativity can reshape our information ecosystems. This gathering not only produced innovative ideas but also underscored the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing the complex challenges facing modern journalism. The summit challenged participants to think creatively about #AI applications in #journalism while maintaining ethical standards and addressing audience concerns. Six teams developed theoretical products ranging from local election tools to personalized news delivery systems, with one team even pursuing funding to turn their AI-powered community calendar into a real product. This experience highlights why we need to break out of our walled gardens to truly transform journalism. We must bring together diverse voices - journalists, technologists, community leaders, artists, and imagineers - so that we can co-create a vision for a thriving information ecosystem. These #hackathons serve as catalysts for creativity, fostering an environment where imagination flourishes, dialogue thrives, experimentation is encouraged, and rapid prototyping becomes possible. They generate innovative ideas that might otherwise remain dormant within the constraints of traditional organizational structures. The success of this summit proves that when we combine diverse expertise and perspectives, we can develop solutions that honor journalistic traditions while embracing the future.
