In the fourth-most populous city in the country, Houston has 4.8 million patients visit the area for health care every year. It is no surprise there is a steady stream of health care construction in the area as Houston is known for its world-class health care, houses the largest medical complex in the world, and boasts a jaw-dropping 85 hospitals and more than 19,000 beds. For Houston to continue to lead the way in medical innovations, it works to build and provide patients with state-of-the-art health care facilities. Health care construction, especially hospital construction, changed due to the pandemic, which forced hospitals and builders to rethink the hospital environment, how it is designed, built and arranged to make it even safer and more adaptable. Today I attended the DFW Healthcare Connection networking event sponsored by Grand Brook Memory Care in Grapevine and Catherine Ledbetter of Alpha Omega Hospice. I learned some fascinating tidbits about longevity from William Hatfield of Grand Brook Memory Care. Grip and Leg Strength are good predictors of health and longevity. So, I did some further research because we all hope to stay in our own homes as long as possible. In order to do that, we have to be strong and healthy enough to remain there safely and perform activities of daily living. The Significance of Grip Strength and Leg Strength for Longevity Grip strength is a significant predictor of overall health and longevity. Research indicates that a strong grip is associated with slower biological aging, better overall muscle strength, and a lower risk of chronic diseases and mortality. Here are some key points about the importance of grip strength: 1. Indicator of Overall Health: Grip strength is a reliable indicator of a person's overall body strength, including the ability to fight infections and recover from diseases. It is linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. 2. Cognitive and Emotional Health: Weak grip strength has been associated with cognitive impairments, such as memory problems and slower processing speeds, as well as emotional health issues like depression. Maintaining a strong grip helps in preserving mental health and reducing the risk of cognitive decline. 3. Physical Independence and Quality of Life: Strong grip strength contributes to better physical independence in older adults, allowing them to perform daily activities and reduce the risk of falls and injuries. This independence is crucial for maintaining a higher quality of life and reducing the risk of frailty. Leg strength is equally important for longevity and overall health. Here are some reasons why maintaining strong legs is vital: 1. Mobility and Balance: Strong leg muscles are essential for mobility and balance, which help prevent falls, a leading cause of injury in older adults. Improved leg strength contributes to better stability and coordination. 2. Functional Independence: Just like grip strength, leg strength supports functional independence by enabling older adults to perform activities like climbing stairs, walking, and standing up from a seated position. This independence is crucial for a higher quality of life. 3. Cardiovascular Health: Engaging in activities that strengthen leg muscles, such as walking, running, and resistance training, also promotes cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of heart diseases, and improves overall physical fitness. Maintaining both grip & leg strength through regular exercise can significantly enhance overall health, reduce the risk of diseases, and improve the quality of life as one ages. Continuing our conversation about Bisnow's Future of Houston Healthcare event, Nicole Rivera and Jeffrey Farr, AIA, had the pleasure of reconnecting with longtime clients Heather Wall, RID, Kristen Kupperman, and Alexis Omiwade from Texas Medical Center. As facilities strive to create more inviting spaces, there's an understandable need to balance this welcoming atmosphere with robust security measures to ensure the safety of both patients and staff. 🌟 Exciting News for Texas Health Centers! 🌟 Last year, the Texas Department of State Health Services allocated $19.3 million in grants to Federally Qualified Health Centers and similar non-profit health centers, aiming for overall enhancements in healthcare delivery. This investment is a significant step towards bolstering community health services across the state. The grants, ranging from $500,000 to $1 million, were allocated to 35 different facilities, enabling much-needed renovations, staff expansion, and acquisition of advanced equipment, including mobile health units. PRIME exits and American HealthCare Capital are pleased to introduce a Medicaid Home Care Agency for sale in South Texas. The company has been providing non-skilled home care services, including homemaking services and personal care for decades. They operate from multiple locations, serving a 19-county area in South Texas (Region 11). The South Texas home health company’s payer mix is primarily Medicaid MCO with a small percentage of private pay. Gross revenues in 2019 were $36.8 million and $34.7 million in 2020. In 2021, they generated $31.9 million with an adjusted EBITDA of $919,024 (2.88%). For the nine months ended 9/30/22, they generated $24.4 million with an adjusted EBITDA of $813,497 (3.33%). The company expects 2022 to close with gross revenues of $30.8 million. In 2023, gross revenues are projected to grow to $35 million with an adjusted EBITDA of approximately $1.5 million. Their current average census exceeds 1,450 patients, and they currently employ over 2,800 team members. The Medicaid home care company bills over 183,000 hours per month on average. The owners intend to retire but will assist with a transition. All non-owner employees are expected to transition under new ownership. "Where there's a sustainable environment, where there's energy consciousness, there is good health." — Gaurav Khadse, Vice President of Facilities Planning and Development at Texas Children's Hospital. When Texas Children's Hospital, one of the leading pediatric hospitals in America, decided to expand its footprint into the Central Texas market with its North Austin Campus, it had a goal of achieving a two-star rating under the Austin Energy Green Building program (AEGB) -- a precursor to the LEED rating system. Not only did this project achieve that goal, it exceeded it. The campus earned a 3-star rating by harnessing innovative technologies, including recycling condensate water for landscape irrigation, a landscape design that honors Central Texas ecology, efficient electrical and plumbing fixtures, and a larger retention wet pond. “This report gives us an important snapshot of what happens when Texans with low incomes lose affordable health insurance,” says Ann Barnes, MD, MPH - president and CEO of Episcopal Health Foundation. See results from a new survey by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and EHF showing that nearly half of low-income Texas adults who were disenrolled from #Medicaid health insurance became uninsured after the state began “unwinding” coverage following the height of the pandemic. “The results are clear – having health insurance improves engagement in health care activities. Loss of coverage reduces engagement in health care activities. That means fewer ways to prevent disease or get an early diagnosis on a serious condition.
