D-esign I-deate C-apture E-dit - DESIGN your event content plan before the event. Factor the RSVP list, influencer partners, and key marketing messaging before the start time. This will inform the topic selection and shot planning during the event. The more homework you do upfront, the easier it is to hit a home run at the event. IDEATE on content topics and thoroughly prepare. Be intentional and formulate a concrete shooting plan. This can include video topics, storyboarding, branding, and questions for the participants. You want to focus primarily on execution during the event, so it’s key to get the preparation in order. CAPTURE your event in a versatile manner. Now that you have your content plan, you can focus on 1) DOCUMENTING the event and 2) CREATING original content at the event. You want a fair balance of both so you can produce versatile videos (short form, interviews, hype video, recap, long form) with original b-roll. EDIT your raw assets into usable content. Think carefully about how you want to distribute the content. Fast-paced short form is great for organic social while more cinematic shots can serve as promotional reel for future events and sponsor activation. DO NOT post anything raw. The solopreneur service provider’s branding dilemma: Push-button creative is cheap, fast, and painless. (But it’s also disposable, generic, and ignorable.) However . . . every once in a while something REALLY GOOD parts the sea of look-alike sound-alike marketing stuff online and makes you go “Whoa!!” Like clockwork everybody jumps on that bandwagon to high-jack some buzz. But in a blink everybody's on to the next big thing . . . This is the logarithmic marketplace a solopreneur service provider finds themself. You're kinda screwed if your brand is what you teach, or if it's what you notice that nobody's talking about, or if it's your spikey, spicey, or research data-backed point of view? Can you wrap THAT up and tie it in a bow? Even though it's invisible? How does this work for you?

CNET and Best Buy just announced that they're getting into business with each other in a big way. The two companies are introducing a new advertising business where buyers can purchase across both CNET and Best Buy. According to the press release, "Best Buy and CNET are offering brands the opportunity to engage larger audiences of high-intent shoppers, strengthening the reach and impact of their messages." Two months ago, Mike Mallazzo wrote (for A Media Operator) about why Best Buy should CNET. While this isn't a true M&A deal, the spirit is there. 🚨 CNET + Best Buy = new era for media? The merge of content & commerce hit an inflection point this week. Media company CNET has committed to a first-of-its-kind partnership with Best Buy. CNET will publish articles on BestBuy.com. Ads from Best Buy will run site-wide on CNET, reaching millions of readers. "The deal represents the first time a publisher and retailer have combined data in this way," said analyst Andrew Lipsman. ➡️ Why is this a big deal? CNET and Best Buy have worked together for a year in a test phase. The goal was to lean into the strengths both entities have and combine them toward a bigger whole. Now, there will be "in-store content" by editors at CNET. The product reviews and coverage of new tech offer third-party validation for shoppers. But this isn't a sellout, according to the press release. The partnership relies on "unbiased editorial advice" with CNET recommendations across Best Buy channels. 🤔Why is Red Ventures selling CNET at a loss? Context: Red Ventures sells CNET, one of the largest publishers on the web, to Ziff Davis for +$100 million after buying it for ~$500 million. 📉The big reason for the sale is that total traffic dropped by -50% over the last 3 years. The driver: organic traffic dropped by -68%! Note that even Red Ventures' incredibly smart SEO team, with strong internal tooling, couldn't reverse the trend. 👉🏻Takeaway: Even the smartest SEOs cannot force Google to love a site.
