Here's how you can showcase your database engineering expertise to your superiors.
"Not my department." If someone contacts you for help, you help them. If you can't do what they need, you direct them to someone who can, or at least to somewhere they can find out who to ask. If the interruption costs you a few minutes to get back into rhythm, imagine how much time they are losing as they stumble and flail around seeking help. Every minute they waste costs the company some of its bottom line, and morale is a resource that's hard to acquire, and harder to replace. If it's happening so often that it's a problem, then note that there's a problem and start raising a flag to get it fixed. Be a part of the solution, for any problem that's brought to you. People will remember it.

You may be good, but you're only human. You will make mistakes. Automation reduces the footprint of human frailty. It lets you take a set of steps that have been tried and proven, and encode them into the hands of a tireless machine that will stupidly do them exactly the same, every time. Yes, you can automate a flaw into the process, but you should be automating test suites as well, and not just for your happy path, or flaws you've seen before. Make your testing system introduce occasional randomness. Throw random characters into random spots of your data records and see if the system can catch the data corruption. And for Heaven's sake, refine your logs. Useless info is worse than false data. Be informative, but concise and USEFUL!

Remember your context. Even live OLTP is often through a front-end automation that handles connections, and DW analysis with Cubes (or even spreadsheets...) usually means some sort of service account. Remember to automate the security maintenance of the automation itself. Timely, transparent, automated password changes reduce vulnerability. Freshen your tokens. Use private keys. And of course, NEVER trust "the network" to handle that; a walled garden is only as secure as the weakest point of entry, and all it takes is one gap.

Here's how you can showcase your database engineering expertise to your superiors.
Remember that "database" doesn't always mean relational, and "queries" don't always mean SQL. Know your implementation, know your data, know your syntax and tools. SQL written against an RDBMS Data Warehousing Star Schema will function differently than a MongoDB query written in Node,js or an Apache Cassandra query. Still, the principles of intelligent indexing, of tactical subqueries, of using simplest (probably mathematical) comparisons against simplest (probably integer) data types instead of long string or (all gods forbid) regex searches to select records... these virtually always apply.

As an undergraduate I designed the registration system the university later adopted.
The new process
- reduced cost, fraud, congestion, and time required for both students and teachers
- improved security, enforcement of policy, collection of demographics, working conditions for the temporary staff, and student satisfaction

ASVAB
Score: 99
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery - it's a measure of trainability and capability.
99 is the highest score, indicating no restrictions; this person is capable of learning and doing anything needed.
I've taken the test several times, and always get 99.
