Worked on mapping same SIMD processor architecture to novel signal processing methods for solving co-channel interference in conjunction with HP Labs. Pioneered fuzzy clustering methods (published here: http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/97/HPL-97-95.html) and experimented with ANNs to solve same problem (patented 1995).

NOTE: I exited the program to create Europe's first mobile start-up (Magic E Company) after EU funding stopped.

Engine is now in production and used on key projects in health, pharma, sports and military applications.

Engine deployed Big Data storage/analysis, combining offline with online (real-time) processing. Heavy mathematical flavour for various "signal cleansing" techniques common to noisy sensor data.

Again, this was an "internal start-up" type of project combining deep technical expertise with pragmatic approaches. Was able to use a combination of my software tech/product skills combined with signal-processing know-how learned from my chip-design career.

Led project to build connFu using agile/lean methods with internal software team and key technology partners, incorporating modern Web software technologies, patterns and paradigms.

Vision was to combine "Ruby style" expressiveness (via Ruby DSL) with "Heroku style" deployment joy running atop of telco voice and messaging apparatus. Also combined "Gnip" like aggregation of real-time streams exposed via API and domain-specific query language.

Project was "internal start-up" in which I consider I am an expert - need to be half product/tech guy and half "corporate change agent." I only use modern Silicon Valley-style start-up methods.

I was hired as consultant in 2010 to "disrupt" O2 technology directorate by the application of modern Web patterns and paradigms, sponsored by the CTO.

Introduced a number of company-wide innovation initiatives (including crowdsourcing, hack days, barcamps etc.) and specific projects to disrupt from within.

Led to several key projects (see connFu/hashblue projects on my LinkedIn profile) and the creation of O2 Labs, of which I was a founding member.

Led to several key projects (see connFu/hashblue projects on my LinkedIn profile) and the creation of O2 Labs, of which I was a founding member.

A large part of the puzzle was finding ways to evangelize the "Web way" to senior stakeholders. Had several sessions with the O2 board, including open platforms and related memes.

The idea was not to turn O2 into a "Google" but to find how "Google methods" could make O2 a better company.

It was a highly successful engagement and one of the most rewarding of my career in terms of impact. Many of the memes eventually morphed their way into the foundation of Telefonica Digital, of which I am an officially recognised "founding member" from the founders-day kick-off.

Telefonica is one of the most innovative telcos today and probably best positioned to survive the OTT threat and transitional phase that telcos currently face. Many will not survive.

I wore bright shoes a lot.
