I'm the frontend lead for LocalGov Drupal. You know what I just did? I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why my custom theme CSS was not overriding my base theme CSS. I don't know how junior developers survive, if someone like me can make such a silly mistake as this: header: css: component: css/components/header.css: {} instead of this: header: css: theme: css/components/header.css: {} Be kind when people don't get things right. Take it as a learning opportunity for them, not a bashing opportunity. Everyone is doing their best.

💡𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: This week, I've conducted so many Interviews for the "Senior WordPress Developer" position. Unfortunately😓, I have to say that even those who claim to have 7-8 years of experience don't actually know much about development. They can’t even create a custom widget, let alone develop a plugin. All they know is 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽, yet they call themselves WordPress experts. They simply pick a template, make some edits, and hand it over to the client. WordPress Development is not just drag-and-drop. Anyone who learns how to drag-and-drop starts calling themselves a WordPress developer, but true development means creating custom solutions tailored to the client’s needs. Sadly, I couldn't find a single person with real experience in these areas. I'm really disappointed by the skill level—people seem to take WordPress far too lightly. 𝗠𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀👩‍💻: If you really want to stand out, don’t just settle for drag-and-drop. My advice when hiring Project Managers in software/web development. Their existing "deep" experience with a specific technology is less important than their ability to think, learn, and adapt. Imagine your company works with WordPress CMS. You have 2 candidates. Candidate 1: - 10 years of WordPress experience - Worked at 1 company Candidate 2: - 8 years of CMS experience between AEM, Umbraco, Hubspot, and proprietary CMSs - Worked at 4 companies + contracting Candidate 2 stands out as a better option, even though they have ZERO WordPress experience AND have fewer years of experience Reasons for choosing Candidate 2: - They are adaptable enough to learn many systems, which can provide valuable insight and perspectives into what looks good in new projects. They would ask questions like: Can WordPress do XYZ? Can we make a plugin like the one I have seen in Hubspot? - They have seen the inside of multiple companies' processes. They have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and can draw on these observations to help improve your efficiency. In short, learning the ins and outs of a specific technology for a Project Manager is a relatively trivial concern. It is not as important as what they can bring to the table in the form of perspectives and efficiencies. Time for a little rant. Some days I regret I picked PHP when I started to get serious with programming, but back then it was just so easy, and free. Any way, recently in the PHP or actually the Laravel world I see DTOs (Data Transfer Objects) popping up and being promoted. As Martin Fowler wrote 20 years ago, sometimes you need to know not just how to implement a pattern but when. What I've seen and read so far in the Laravel world concerning DTOs it is a failure on both ends, the How and the When. And I think it all begins with Eloquent Models being front and center in Laravel. After more than 8 years using Laravel, all the way back to 4.2, I still can't find a good reason why we should use them throughout the whole application. They have their place as "Active Records", in the persistence layer, but that should be it!
