University of California, San Francisco Chancellor, Sam Hawgood, in an interview with Matthew Lungren MD MPH at #ConvergeSummit has outlined the use of #AI scribes to create clinical notes as well as other #AI-driven technologies. Key to their success: a group of practicing physicians with knowledge of AI ensuring that the technology fits into the physicians’ existing workflow, which improves physician adoption of the technology. Another key: measure success through reduction in physician burnout and improvement in patient satisfaction, not increases in physician productivity. Final key: have a real-time, frequent review of implemented technologies to ensure that they still support and are relevant to changing clinical care standards - and shut the technologies down if they are not supporting their purpose.

California Governor Newsom vetoes the controversial AI Safety Bill! And the reasons behind it are worth noting. Stifling innovation is a major concern but so is the lack of nuance in the assessment of risk He states that the bill would 'give the public a false sense of security about controlling this fast-moving technology' Which honestly- is spot on! The Bill tries but both goes too far & not far enough. Grateful to William Sun and MIT Club of Northern California for organizing an insightful Gene Therapy Conference. Being new to this field, here are some things I learned: 🔬 Delivery of gene therapy treatments is a big challenge – ensuring that they reach the right cells, at the right dose, without causing harm, remains a big hurdle. 💡 The up-front cost of gene therapy can be high (e.g., $3M+), however when weighed against a lifetime of treatments using other expensive drugs it can actually be more economical. ⏳ After receiving a gene therapy treatment, it’s difficult to undergo another. Patients face the tough choice of opting for a moderately effective treatment now or holding off for a potentially better one in the future. 🔍 Advances in DNA testing and treatments could lead to removing and repairing stem cells before a disease even presents itself. 🎯 The sweet spot for gene therapy products lies in targeting niche diseases that also offer broader health benefits to larger populations. 🤝 More transparency around FDA submissions, protocols, and research would streamline progress across the entire ecosystem and be a win for all players + humanity. Excited to share the reason why I dropped out from MIT. We raised a $9M seed round led by the best in the business at Patron, First Spark Ventures, and A16Z GAMES SPEEDRUN to build digital human beings -- starting with friends who can play any game with you and are always online. Digital human beings -- specifically agents with fundamental human qualities -- are inevitable and will be of world-changing consequence. We believe if built with a strongly pro-human framework, they can be the source of unlimited empathy, fun and friendship at scale. Starting in games allows us to train, iterate, and ship faster. We also have a clear use case for differentiated social-emotional intelligence, episodic memory, and grounded actions. Improving these human qualities opens new doors into broader simulations, productivity agents, and finally embodied digital intelligence. I can't thank the incredible team at MIT Sloan School of Management enough and even more importantly the incredible friends I made during my two years in Cambridge. To be able to harness dynamics at the quantum level is already a game-changer. To be able to harness it leveraging principles of #complexadaptivesystems - whole-systems quantum computation - is going to result in systematization of #quantumsupremacy. In the times to come we should therefore expect to see more displays of this where D-Wave’s annealing quantum computing is used.

A new research paper by our incredible teams at Google Research and Google DeepMind shows the strong performance of Med-Gemini across a variety of multimodal tasks, including 2D and 3D imaging in radiology, histopathology, ophthalmology, and dermatology, and genomics. Med-Gemini ranked best in class on chest X-ray and CT scan report generation, and is able to perform genomics-based disease prediction and mortality risk more accurately than a standard linear polygenic risk score (PRS) based approach. This work couldn't have been possible without close collaboration with our partners, including a panel of specialists who assessed and rated our models as part of this research.
