The Massachusetts Clean Peak Standard (or CPS) will help #renewableenergy developers and operators further increase returns on storage assets. In addition to using #batteries for energy arbitrage, ancillary services, solar firming, curbing curtailment, and more – operators leveraging this program are awarded for having renewable energy available to contribute in what were already the most lucrative hours. Projects able to capture Clean Peak Energy Credits (or CPECs) by combining accurate forecasting and operations that ensure operators deliver into peak hours, will have the winning formula to support grid reliability and maximize revenue as MA transitions the grid. Venture Capital recharges energy storage Companies working on alternatives to chemical batteries for energy storage received a funding boost in Q2. Overall VC dealmaking in the clean energy market during the first half of 2024 was roughly in line with the same period last year. But the alternative energy storage segment surged in Q2 2024—notching over $582 million across 16 deals, according to PitchBook latest Emerging Tech Research. In Q2 2024, the grid infrastructure segment raised $2.6 billion—the highest VC funding, representing 60.1% of clean energy funding for the quarter. This was followed by intermittent renewable energy sources at $1.2 billion, clean fuels at $705.7 million, and finally dispatchable energy sources at $305.1 million. Of the individual categories, battery energy storage overtook solar photovoltaic technologies as the largest category of the quarter, with $2.3 billion in VC deal value, compared with $1.1 billion for solar photovoltaics. Alternative energy storage tech from the nonbattery storage category was the third-largest category in Q2 2024, putting all three categories in the grid infrastructure segment in the top five categories by total raised this quarter. Greater demand for renewable energy, including intermittent sources like solar and wind power, has increased the need for energy storage. NEEA Plays a Key Role in U.S. DOE's Landmark Energy Efficiency Standard for Water Heaters - New federal standard signals move toward efficient, affordable water heating for all consumers. “The energy savings from this final rule over 30 years of shipments is 17.6 quadrillion British thermal units—the largest savings ever from a single DOE efficiency standard, representing more than the energy use of the entire U.S. residential building sector in a single year." The passage of the federal water heating standard represents a major milestone in alliance Market Transformation efforts and is a win for all Northwest gas and electric customers. It is a direct result of nearly 20 years of leadership by the alliance, its market partners, and many stakeholders across the country. For example, the U.S. DOE cites NEEA’s Advanced Water Heating Specification (AWHS) as reference material for its final rule. Originally developed by NEEA in 2009 to ensure cold-climate performance, NEEA has continued to iterate and improve the AWHS to advance higher-performing electric and gas heat pump water heaters. “The new federal consumer water heating standard is a stellar example of how long-term collaboration between utilities, manufacturers, trade allies, efficiency organizations and consumer advocates can deliver lasting market change leading to tremendous energy savings for all Northwest customers. Lazard says fossil fuel costs double that of #utility-scale #solar The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for solar has fallen to between $29/MWh and $92/MWh, according to a new report from Lazard. Utility-scale solar has had the most aggressive cost reduction curve of all technologies, falling about 83% since 2009, when new-build solar generation had an LCOE of over $350/MWh. Solar at the utility-scale is far lower in cost than the LCOE of coal, the least-expensive source of fossil fuel generation. Coal LCOE ranges $69/MWh to $169/MWh, making it nearly double the average LCOE of utility-scale solar assets. Meanwhile, natural gas peaker plants are highly inefficient in LCOE, ranging from $110/MWh to $228/MWh. Nuclear energy had the highest utility-scale LCOE with an average of $182/MWh. THREE BIG AUTO OEMS TARGET NEW MARKETS FOR FUEL CELLS (Part 1) Toyota, Hyundai and General Motors were early movers in developing fuel cell technology as a potential alternative to batteries for zero emission cars. However, slow adoption of fuel cells for passenger vehicles forced a recalibration in strategy for all three companies that included (1) targeting a broader set of transport and non-transport sectors; (2) finding customers for fuel cells beyond their proprietary vehicles; (3) investing in hydrogen infrastructure to facilitate fuel cell adoption; and (4) using partnerships and JVs to diversify upfront investment risk. Heavy duty transportation has clearly emerged as a compelling use case given hydrogen’s massive advantage in gravimetric energy density over batteries as well as infrastructure considerations in certain circumstances. That said, initiatives around passenger cars, forklifts, heavy duty machinery and stationary applications are also underway. A summary of recent hydrogen related activity for each company is presented below (Hyundai and GM in Part 2): TOYOTA - In May 2023, Toyota consolidated all fuel cell and hydrogen related activity (R&D, product design, sales etc.) into a single division called the “Hydrogen Factory”. - In December 2023, Toyota established a European branch of the Hydrogen Factory and established a US hydrogen headquarters in California in May 2024. -In Europe, Toyota is already supplying fuel cells for Caetano city buses and will develop hydrogen trucks with Hyliko in France and VDL Groep in the Netherlands (including using VDL trucks in its own logistics operations) as well as marine applications with Corvus in Norway. - In the US, Toyota began manufacturing fuel cell powertrain kits to supply third party truck OEMs including PACCAR’s Kenworth brand which already has 10 trucks in operation and is moving to serial production. A recent contract award from Toyota to Hexagon Purus for hydrogen tanks to be used in the powertrain kits may be an indication of momentum in this initiative. - Also in the US, at the Port of Long Beach in California, Toyota and FuelCell Energy recently launched operations of plant that produces hydrogen from directed biogas for refueling drayage trucks integral to Toyota’s logistic operations among other uses. - Stationary initiatives include the construction of hydrogen powered microgrid for its own office campus in California and a successful deployment for stationary power at a recent LPGA event. -In Asia, Toyota is active across the fuel cell spectrum including marketing its own fuel cell forklifts, a partnership with Daimler Trucks in Japan and a JV with Beijing SinoHytec for trucks in China. #hydrogen #fuelcells #toyota #hyundai #generalmotors #gm #hyliko #vdlgroep #corvus #paccar #kenworth #hexagonpurus #fuelcellenergy #daimlertruck #beijingsinohytec #honda #navistar #liebherr #wabtec #nel #ANDnotOR

THE POWER TO GENERATE WEALTH Economic Engineering leads to a Known REAL RATE OF RETURN and that delivers REAL economic growth. Robert Houbolt. He sat at the inflection point in history and engineering. Without his perseverance it may have taken NASA many more years and more wheelbarrows full of dollars to get the US to the moon first. NASA was stuck in the mindset and engineering myopia of building a single piece of equipment to get to and from the moon. They only saw a rocket that would, like the early Sci-Fi movies, carry massive amounts of fuel to go straight to the moon, land, then lift off and go straight back to earth.    Houbolt proposed the much simpler, cleaner and more accurate engineering method, the 'lunar orbit and rendezvous'. Henry Ford. 'The Machine That Changed the World,’ (MIT press), focuses on lean production and discusses Ford's mass production and how it eliminated the 'craft' methods of the time. Variability in dimensions, tensile strength, labor cost per unit, slow or stop production processes were eliminated. The Path to Efficiency Houbolt had to first convince the historical and mainstream that their approach was not going to get them where they wanted to go without layers and layers of expense and time. Ford had to standardize the metallurgy to produce standardized parts for mass/standardized production. He had to have ‘known’ parts. Ford had to simplify and find the method with the least number of variances. Application to Today’s Economic Models and Methods The members of the Federal Reserve and global debt markets are stuck, much like NASA and the Automobile industry was. It is time the FED questions and updates their economic models, the debt markets and removes layers of expense and variability.   The capture of a 'Real Rate of Return' from an economic endeavor/activity is equal to the economic growth rate of a project, up to and including a global system; why do we start debt financing structures with this result being an unknown?    Capture Improved Economic and Financial Outcomes    Start with a known/fixed REAL rate of return, shift the efficient frontier upwards and to the left and capture greater economic growth and lower inflationary pressures. #renewables Tax Credit Transfer Market to Exceed $20 Billion in 2024 According to tax credit exchange Crux Climate, the tax credit transfer market created by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is projected to reach a volume of $22 to $25 Bn this year, up from only $4 Bn in 2023. WIth the corresponding growth in new tax credit exchange startups, some observers believe the market has already seen "Peak Exchange" and predict something of an industry shakeout among the intermediaries, even as market volume remains strong. The exchange market has clearly benefitted from the demand for tax credit monetization above what could be served by the existing tax equity market, and the primary beneficiaries have been the smaller developers who couldn't attract the interest of the the big bank investors in tax equity. The market has also clearly benfitted from the growth of the tax insurance market, helping make small developers bankable, with aggressive insurers selling policies on credit exchange transactions even before the regulations were finalized. A big chunk of the market involves the established tax equity investors using the originate and syndicate model, who buy tax benefits through tax equity partnerships, and then sell the ITC in exchange transactions, enabling them to originate transactions in excess of their tax capacity. This structure also allows the exchange to take place at a stepped up basis, as established in the tax equity transaction, whereas a freestanding exchange transaction may have had to use developer's cost as the basis, without qulaifying for the stepup.   As a result, the tax credit market has been able to serve both 9-figure deals with major developers, down to deals like a transaction for Navajo Power Home, for small resi systems on tribal lands, for $335,000 in ITC .
