Pleased to highlight the important commitments made by G7 Leaders to advance women's economic security! They underscored the importance of strengthening the care economy as essential to enabling women's economic leadership, and set a target to track progress, "aim[ing] by 2035 to support 200 million more women to join the workforce by investing in efforts to close the global gap in the availability of childcare, including through the The World Bank Invest in Childcare Initiative." USAID helped launch the World Bank Invest in Childcare Initiative two years ago, with a commitment of $50 million over 5 years. This public-private partnership is showing immense impact. In partnership with other G7 nations, hopes are high that we will reach the historic target set last week.

Amid the challenges posed by the Israel/Gaza demonstrations on American campuses, along with a rising tide of political attacks on the autonomy of American universities, shared governance is also eroding on many campuses. The internal conflict that is splitting university communities, and fueling outside criticism, is also lending momentum to university presidents, and governing boards, ignoring and downgrading the voice and role of faculty senates – to some degree joining forces with lawmakers in some states who are attacking tenure, forcing curricular changes, demanding the end to the nomenclature of DEI, and view faculty as the problem. Traditional knowledge can provide a wealth of insights into and solutions to multiple development challenges that complement modern approaches, deepen our understanding of the cultures and environments we work in and the populations and communities we work with. Building resilience to #ClimateChange is one of these areas. The article below by Philip Malsale, a senior climatologist with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), provides telling, real-life examples of why #TraditionalKnowledge is relevant in the fight against the #ClimateCrisis, how practices passed down from generation to generation can provide early warning systems for tropical cyclones, contribute to adaptation solutions in a changing environment or strengthen weather and #climate information and forecasting. *Wonk alert* As a comms professional, I closely follow the work of Yale's Anthony Leiserowitz. I was super excited to read that Tony and colleagues recently published an article in Nature, 'The evolving climate change investing strategies of asset owners,' a deep dive into #assetowners engagement with climate change. This dovetails with CPI's recent analysis of #pensionfunds progress on aligning portfolios with climate change realities, 'State of European Pension Funds’ Net-Zero Transition.' After banks, pensions funds are the largest source of investable capital, and other asset owners like foundations and family offices are hugely influential in investment trends. We need more active engagement from asset owners to address the climate emergency. #climatefinance Both studies find ample opportunity for asset owners to engage with advisors, asset managers, portfolio investments, and each other to overcome barriers and accelerate efforts. Are you concerned about digital authoritarianism? Experts convened by National Endowment for Democracy's International Forum for Democratic Studies, the Global Digital Policy Incubator and the Hoover Institution, Stanford University explored how authoritarian regimes use tech for social control. One prominent example of the spread of digital authoritarianism is Venezuela's "homeland" system, built with tech from Chinese vendor ZTE. This system integrates personal data, allowing the ruling party to monitor citizens and control access to services. Despite increasing data collection, authoritarian regimes don't always effectively use the information. Practical obstacles like limited technical capacity, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and people's resistance can hinder these systems. Emerging technologies like VR and AR headsets present new avenues for surveillance. These devices collect body-based data, including eye movements, potentially revealing personal attitudes, medical information, and even truthfulness. What can be done? COP29 side-event: Data for 21st century governance This session focused on one of the most important, but also forgotten issues for climate action, DATA…. Dennis Pamlin and Jay Hennessy from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden/NCI provided an introduction to the area of data for 21st century governance. They highlighted the fact that there is very little human need-based data, and very much product and sector based data.  We have data about garments, but very little about wardrobes and close to nothing about how their support (or undermine) sustainable lives. We have information about different sources of protein, but very little about the nutrition and climate impact of the meals people eat, and even less about how much is actually eaten and in what context  so we know if they support healthy lives. We know a lot about sources of energy, but little about the system that delivers on human needs, and close to nothing about how the energy system is linked to the temperatures, light, etc that people need. The list goes on… To make the questions even more challenging we have very little understanding of how we can provide different kinds of data (e.g. individual quantitative data points, system data, and wisdom) into governance systems. Dennis Pamlin also highlighted the partnership with James Hodson and AI for Good Foundation, where though leaders like Eliot Frazier have helped NCI with tool development and insights into the opportunities and challenges with current LLMs. Adam Bly from @systeminc presented a very promising approach to gather data in connected systems that allow for deeper understanding of root causes and potentially also tipping points. Dr. Riyong K. from European Environment Agency provided insights to their work with multiple data sets and the challenges to translate data into actionable knowledge for governments, companies and others facing difficult choices. Rym Ayadi, from the brain capital alliance, provided an insight into brain science and cutting edge knowledge that can guide a new generation of climate action.  Mariell Juhlin, who is leading an initiative, Sustaingov, about governance in the 21st century described different work areas where leading stakeholders are already exploring new governance opportunities. She also highlighted both opportunities and challenges for this journey. Ruth Reichstein from Ursula von der Leyen cabinet could not make it to the session, but provided valuable input to the preparation and how governance issues are discussed in European Commission. A network for 21st century governance will work to present a “data for the 21st century” and work with cities and other stakeholders that want to lead the next generation of innovative work towards a sustainable future. As I am on my way to #Baku for #COP29, I wrote about six essential reframes leaders should consider to catalyze #climate action - all based on Clean Air Task Force's latest research and analysis: 📉 From fragmentation to coalitions: In an era of #geopolitical divides, diverse alliances are critical for reducing emissions. Coalitions like the Net-Zero-Nuclear Pledge and the #CarbonManagement Challenge show that varied strategies – not one-size-fits-all plans – are essential for real progress. 💰 #Finance rooted in reality: Lofty targets often ignore the economic realities facing developing nations. CATF released a study challenging how the cost of capital is used in policy planning in #African countries. Currently, lenders use a 10% uniform value, though the actual weighted average cost of capital is much higher and is expected to drop from 18% to 13% through 2070, while varying widely by region. Such prohibitive capital cost risks further deepening climate action inequity and debt burdens, all while further undermining investment in capital-intensive clean energy projects. 🕰 Prioritizing fast action to slow the rate of warming: Reducing #methane emissions is the best way to put the brakes on the current rapid rate of warming. Solid waste management is the third largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions. At COP29, the Presidency will call on Parties to join the Declaration on Reducing Methane from #OrganicWaste to reduce methane in waste and food systems. This is an important step to widen the focus on methane mitigation across additional sources of emissions, for fast action. 💡 Expanding power #decarbonization solutions to achieve energy security: #Electricity demand is expected to soar over the next years. Embracing clean firm #power will be critical to matching energy demand and security with climate ambition. Modelling continues to show that a more robust electricity system can be created through technology diversity. Technologies such as #nuclear fission, #fusion, and superhot rock #geothermal can complement strong renewable capacity additions, especially as demand is expected to soar from #AI, #electrification, and extreme weather. 🏭 Moving from individual #climate projects to climate as an infrastructure problem Effective climate solutions need efficient connecting infrastructure such as transmission lines, #pipelines, and storage to support an energy transition. Integrated systems are essential for sustainable progress.   🎯 Moving from #target-setting to pathway #planning While #climate ambition is important, planning for the infrastructure that can actually deliver emissions reductions is even more important, yet continues to be neglected.

"Beyond foundations making commitments to practice better due diligence, lowering barriers of entry for receiving funding, and making reporting less cumbersome on grantees, the fact remains that too often communities are ultimately held accountable to foundations with no reciprocity. This fosters an inequitable power dynamic that persists between wealth holders and those without wealth. The very community members who philanthropy exists to serve have no guarantee that their funders will be accountable to them. And there is currently no way to systematically measure whether foundations are changing their practices or reaching their missions and goals. Good ideas abound from grassroots leaders, but examples of how funder accountability is put into practice are often harder to come by. Tomorrow, we join local & state government officials & NGO leaders to learn how to fight climate change. We will walk through the process of measuring local emissions, developing plans to reduce them, and connecting these actions to overall goals for serving communities. As COP28 showed at its Local Climate Action Summit, “local leaders play [a critical role] in reducing emissions, addressing climate risk, and supercharging national efforts to move further and faster on climate progress.” To accomplish this goal in the American context, we need high-value “bootcamps” to build capacity, develop the workforce, build a collective network of action, and support the emerging sustainability market in our democratic republic. This project recognizes that reality, seeking to accelerate and expand climate action by training municipal, county, and other sub-state government actors in best practices for greenhouse gas mitigation. Grounded in ethics of love of home, fair treatment and equal involvement, and science-based assessment, we will train local government officials, students, & professionals on how to assess local greenhouse gas emissions, understand emissions at scale, effect climate action through policy, programs, partnerships, and other means, and connect them to their mandates and strategic goals for service. https://lnkd.in/e6zc5Vet

The outcome of #COP29 was no surprise to me. It was predictable if we consider the unfolding of events not just around the #US elections, but for some time now. #Baku is only a 'reminder' of the priorities that are shaping, #climate commitments in an era defined by the twin existential crises of security and survival. Two trillion-dollar priorities thus resonate side by side- #NATO's defence spending & the need for mobilizing #climatefinance for developing countries. Unless we see #climatecrisis as a threat to national security as well, frustrations will only grow.
