Your domain controller is the roadmap to your entire infrastructure and all the permissions associated with that. If you lose your domain controller, all your workstations and your users lose their relationships. It takes an incredible amount of work—and frustration—to rebuild that. Microsoft’s July 2024 security updates have prompted some Windows devices to boot into BitLocker recovery mode. This unexpected behavior follows the installation of the July 9, 2024, update (KB5040442) and affects various client and server Windows releases. BitLocker, a security feature designed to protect data from theft, automatically enters recovery mode under certain conditions, including hardware changes or firmware updates. Users impacted by this update will see a BitLocker recovery screen and will need to enter their recovery key to unlock their device. Affected versions include Windows 11 and Windows 10 on the client side, and several versions of Windows Server. Microsoft is investigating the issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available. This situation highlights the critical need for effective patch management and user preparedness for recovery scenarios.
