Haas Jr. Family Fund, Stephanie Martinez, and Chief Community Impact Officer at United Way Bay Area, Kelly Batson about philantrhopic funding disparities across the Bay Area and what funders can do about them. "In August 2023, United Way Bay Area (UWBA) released a report on philanthropic funding disparities across eight of the Bay Area counties. This report builds on other countless reports, examining the inequitable funding in the Bay Area and beyond. "Northern California Grantmakers (NCG) hosted a session at their Annual Conference in June 2024 on how we build an equitable thriving region by addressing our region’s interconnectedness and historical disinvestment. "At a virtual discussion in July 2024, funders and community based organizations explored how funders can expand their reach, how funders can support a strong nonprofit ecosystem for overlooked regions, and steps philanthropy can take to increase overall giving." I started building websites in 1993 when most didn't care much about this new technology called the World Wide Web; I taught myself how to code in a text editor. I see the same progression in AI-generated materials. This is why it is SO essential to incorporate AI teaching/learning into your curriculum, beginning with your course syllabus to explain your expectations, ethics, and how you plan to use (or teach) about ethical ways to use AI that will benefit students in their career. I would like to see as much training as possible in all areas, including training for current faculty and staff as well as student learning. I just completed several courses from the Adobe Education Institute as well as being part of a year-long, multi-college committee discussing Writing Across the Curriculum using AI-generating tools. On December 5, 2024, I had the privilage of presenting a working session for the Southern California #PrivateDirectorsAssociation, entitled #NavigatingtheWhiteWaterWorld: #ScenarioPlanning "A Strategic Tool for #UncertainTimes.” The context part of the session “why and why now” illustrated the point that in today's turbulent and volatile White Water World, a world that is hyper-connected, radically contingent, fast and entangled resulting in an unpredictable geo-political climate, boards of directors must provide advice and counsel to the leadership team. Scenario planning emerges as a vital tool, fostering not only strategic foresight but also collective learning within the boardroom and the organization. "Scenario planning can help leaders envision the future of our business and connect these visions to the near-term choices they face today.” Scenario planning originated in the military and later adopted by corporations like Royal Dutch Shell in the 1970s. Scenario planning encourages collective learning by involving diverse perspectives, minimizing cognitive biases and a “rush to the numbers” in the process of developing and exploring alternative futures that a strategic plan is being prepared to address. By engaging board members and key stakeholders in this process we can promote a shared understanding of potential risks and opportunities as they explore the impacts of an alternative future on the focal issue they are examining.  This collaborative approach ensures that strategic decisions are well-informed and resilient in the light of what the future environment holds. The eight-step scenario planning process, which is integrated with  a company's strategic planning cycle follows: Identify the Focal Issue: Define the central issue or decision that needs addressing. For example, the challenges and opportunities of entering a new market, adapting to regulatory change (think tariffs today), technology disruptions and the list goes on. Gather Key Factors: Collect internal and external factors influencing the focal issue. Identify Driving Forces: Determine external driving forces shaping the environment. Rank by Importance and Uncertainty: Prioritize driving forces based on their impact and uncertainty. Develop Scenario Frameworks: Create frameworks by combining driving forces to form distinct scenarios. Create Narratives: Develop detailed narratives for each scenario, illustrating how futures might unfold. Identify Implications and Options: Analyze each scenario's implications and explore strategic options. Monitor and Update: Continuously track environmental changes and update scenarios. The participants developed their own scenario by working through the process as it was being presented. A working example of the power of collective learning. We concluded the session stating that by embedding scenario planning into their company’s strategic planning cycle, boards not only enhance decision-making and foster a #cultureofcollectivelearning.

One high school student reflected, "I never thought college was for me, but after doing this class...I think I see education in my future." Increasing the number of high school students who have an opportunity to take college courses and earn college credit through dual enrollment can be particularly beneficial for students who are in low income earning households, students of color, and students who are the first-generation in their family to attend college. Stanford Social Innovation Review's summer issue includes an article by Kathleen Kelly Janus, formerly California’s first senior advisor on social innovation, that summarizes lessons learned and provides case studies of successful public-private partnerships. The themes highlighted in the article resonate with my experiences working inside philanthropy, including the following four key ingredients for successful public-private partnerships: relationship-building, committed leadership in both the public and private sectors, creating solutions to high-priority problems, and communicating impact. The article also describes common challenges including lack of urgency, conflicts of interest, lack of internal capacity, low motivation, and political factors. Given these challenges, it takes dedicated capacity to spearhead these efforts, and I’m pleased that the social innovation model is gaining traction in states and municipalities across the country, including here at Metro in metropolitan Portland, led by Yohannes Wolday.

On September 27, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1137 into law, making California the first state to codify intersectionality into its anti-discrimination statutes. This milestone legislation was cosponsored by Equal Rights Advocates, whose advocacy continues to drive progress in gender and racial equality. What Does This Mean? Effective January 1, 2025, CA law will explicitly recognize that discrimination can arise from a combination of protected traits—such as race and gender or LGBTQ+ status and age. This update applies to: - The Unruh Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination by businesses. - The Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), which addresses workplace discrimination. While this concept isn’t new—1994’s Lam v. University of Hawaii established the precedent that identity cannot be dissected into separate categories—SB 1137 codifies this principle into law. Now, courts must consider whether a combination of characteristics led to discriminatory treatment. With this new law, discrimination claims involving intersectional bias may become more complex. It's important to ensure that anti-harassment policies and training are updated to address combined traits and promote inclusivity for all employees. CA continues to set the bar for progressive employment laws, with the nation watching closely. Employers, take this as a sign to proactively review and strengthen workplace policies.
