From 2017 - 2021, I lead growth efforts for Southern California’s largest innovation lab, Toolbox LA. 🚀 It was HQ for MiLA Capital, an early-stage hardware fund investing in tech you can touch. 🤖 I was fortunate to have amazing leaders who believed in my abilities and let me experiment. They also took the time to teach me new concepts about project management and finance. This was critical to our success. Without exceptional leaders, it's really hard to scale anything successfully. I feel so fortunate to have worked for smart, kind, and thoughtful investors who taught me so much. Thank you, Noramay Cadena, Carmen Palafox, and Shaun Arora for all that you've done to help my career. Here are some results I achieved through strategic marketing initiatives around customer acquisition (we had 2 business models: monthly membership fees and event space booking fees) 🚀 Grew memberships and revenue within the 24 months of operation from $4,000 to $35,000 MRR 🚀 Maintained a sales pipeline of over $500k in leads utilizing the HubSpot CRM system 🚀 Leveraged new and emerging industry-related digital channels (Peerspace, LiquidSpace, Croissant) for brand awareness and $150k in lead generation 🚀 Worked with LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s team to launch Toolbox LA in tandem with LA’s Manufacturing Week, resulting in over 1000+ RSVPs, media coverage, and a continuation of successful government relationships 🚀 Launched First Fridays, a monthly event series showcasing local artisans, small businesses, creatives, and DTC brands There was a lot more we accomplished, but those achievements are the ones I am most proud of. Reflecting on this time, I am incredibly grateful for the ability to experiment. Freedom and trust within an organization are key to sustainable growth. We also had a major advantage in our value proposition: we were the only innovation lab in Southern California with open, community access to a full maker space, wet lab, and coworking amenities. I learned so much about product prototyping from the members and portfolio companies. I wish I could tell you this place still existed, but we were one of the unfortunate consequences of the pandemic. We shut down in January 2021. Now, it serves as home to Machina Labs, which is doing some truly innovative work in AI and manufacturing. I still use the Toolbox LA mantra when tackling hard problems: "Wake up, kick ass, repeat" This is just one chapter in my 16 years of experience in marketing, community building, and partnerships. From where I sit in the SF Bay Area, cradle of innovation for at least the last 30 years, I'm a true believer in the promise of the #AI revolution. That said, I find it fascinating to consider views on the opposing side. I'm sharing below two opinion pieces from the last two weeks suggesting that the AI revolution is fundamentally overhyped and a bubble ripe for bursting, and that AI tools are actually not useful or transformative. Contrast this with venture capitalist Kai-Fu Lee's prognostication that 50% of white collar jobs will be displaced by #AI within three years, and that OpenAI and the other cutting edge movers in the space are headed to a trillion+ dollar valuation. Which side will win out? Where will we be by 2030 in the AI race? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

The AI landscape is evolving rapidly, with a clear trend emerging: value creation is shifting from model development to application-focused solutions. This shift, highlighted during the GenAI show discussions at Motier Ventures (thank you millefeuille.ai for reporting it in your newsletter ❤️), aligns with observations I've shared in previous posts. As the AI industry matures, we're witnessing a bifurcation in the market. On one side, a small number of companies will continue to create significant value by developing new, groundbreaking models (Mistral AI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta). On the other, a larger group of enterprises will find their niche in building application layers that leverage these models for specific industry needs. In the B2C space, recent announcements from Meta underscore the consolidation of application layers among a few major players. Of course, when your application layer consists of platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, it becomes relatively straightforward to deploy your models at scale. However, the B2B sector presents a different dynamic. Here, success relies on deep industry knowledge, seamless integrations, and data expertise - precisely where companies like Meero are positioned to excel. Rather than competing in the crowded space of general-purpose AI models, we're focused on developing tailored solutions for specific industries. Our products - CarCutter, AutoRetouch, and ProperShot - demonstrate how AI can be effectively applied to solve real-world challenges in automotive, fashion, and real estate sectors. This strategy allows us to create more relevant and impactful solutions. Industry Insider – California hosted a fantastic event with CDPH and their IT leadership. If you are not a member, you should join. Not only do you get access to a broad cross section of the tech community, but you also get to hear directly from agencies. Here are four take aways I shared with our team. IT decision making involves policy and program people not simply IT leadership. They participate and inform the process, but they are not the sole decision-makers. They have a very pro-Microsoft disposition. Their history of AD Hoc, program driven technology spend means their technology stack is very complicated. They view building on a Microsoft platform as a major driver of efficiency and cost savings. Their technology budgeting process is changing which offers opportunities to capture larger sales across program areas in the future. CDPH has massive privacy and security concerns they need help addressing.

One of the true delights of the last year with Vantage Discovery was my own understanding of the magic of AI embeddings representing anything (styles, colors, products, emotions, events).
