Co-founded by functional medicine expert Mark Hyman, MD, the company leverages robust lab testing to improve longevity and healthspan. Taking a proactive approach, twice-annual 100-biomarker panels are reviewed by AI and human clinicians to spot and treat disease. Members can also opt for additional tests as needed. Operating in beta since April, Function Health counts 50K paying customers, a 200K person waitlist, and recently partnered with Equinox. Losing faith in traditional healthcare, more people are seeking preventative scans, alternative medicine, and longevity protocols. Democratizing diagnostics, Function wants to prioritize health over healthcare.

a16z Bio + Health doubles down on healthcare and invests in Function Health In 2022 Andersen Horowitz made the decision to dive into healthcare - because they believe that the biggest company in the world will be a consumer health tech company. This year, A16Z invested in Function Health as the lead in its Series A.  Since launching its beta in 2023, Function Health has amassed 50,000 members - with no marketing.  It boasts a strong founding team, that including Dr. Mark Hyman Ed.D. as its Chief Medical Officer.  Earlier this year, Function announced its partnership with Equinox.  It has raised a total of $53M. A16Z’s investment in Function might come as a surprise to some but it has made no secret of its bet in tackling consumer healthcare. The US Healthcare industry is massive ($4 trillion USD and 20% of GDP) - which is why A16Z, along with every large tech company (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) are moving towards it.  They are also moving towards it because the current largest healthcare company in the world is not a tech company and does a poor job in consumer engagement.  UnitedHealth Group (UHG) is the 19th largest company in the world and the largest healthcare company with a market cap of $450B (not including Eli Lilly and Company and Novo Nordisk).  UHG by all metrics is technically a consumer company with half of its sales being DTC - yet their consumer engagement is extremely poor with a NPS of 4. A consumer health company’s core competency should be their ability to engage and retain patients - something that most healthcare companies have failed to do historically. The healthcare industry is ripe for a consumer-obsessed, healthcare-native tech company that will reimagine what care can look like.  A consumer health company will win by placing consumers first, while still taking into account the realities of payor and provider incentives. As per A16Z, “Function started a movement and has fundamentally changed consumer behavior. ..it’s a preventative, lifelong approach to health, not just a single event or doctor’s visit. It’s a new routine that enables people to catch health issues early and benefit from AI advancements. Traditional healthcare treats symptoms; Function finds root causes.” - all for $499 / year. This is a brilliant post. The following sentence from the expose is a classic oxymoron, especially given the other shared data points. "73% of doctors are in favor of fee-for-service and only 3% of doctors think money impacts their decision-making." However consider the following quote from the posting. The meta-analysis found: 1) Oncologists ordered more Radiation Therapy when their practice owned a Radiation Therapy Facility (as they would also receive the radiation therapy facility fees in addition to doctor professional fees). 2) Oncologists tended to order more expensive Chemotherapy and when a chemotherapy became generic and less expensive, they ordered less of it (oncologists make more money from ordering expensive chemotherapy as opposed to less expensive, generic chemotherapy). Every year at CES we see a lot of promising health tech prototypes and concepts - from noninvasive CGM’s to patches for everything - very few actually make it to market. Often, when it does, the launch product falls short from the initial promise. The reason: FDA Approval. The FDA is designed to protect public health - regulating medical devices falls under its prevue. The FDA clearance process is rigorous and complex to navigate. It a process that takes years - not months - something that the tech industry isn’t used to. A device would need to show clinical-level accuracy for measurements - with a margin of error of under 4 percent or better. Data infrastructure would need to be HIPPA compliant. FDA also requires areas such as communication protocols, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity to be include as a part of the filing. The workaround: Wellness Devices. Most consumer health devices focus on wellness features because they lack FDA certification. As a result, they can only display the data but lack any true medical or diagnostic application. As consumers are pushing their wearables to be health devices, it is getting more and more difficult for wearable companies to hide behind the “wellness” label as an increasing number of companies achieve FDA clearance. Which is a big reason why we wanted to invest in bringing FDA approval capabilities in-house to serve our portfolio of brands. In partnership with B-Secur, SweatWorks can now help any wearable product (and associated software functions) achieve expedited FDA certification. This is a first for a digital agency and has already led to several news devices starting on the FDA approval journey. So the next big thing in #healthtech and #wearables might be #neurotech. Devices worn on or close to the head allow tracking and manipulation of brain activity, making them ideal candidates for therapeutics and bio-hackers or high-performance individuals. The article below is an excellent overview of the field. In the space of therapeutics, the corresponding market is challenging. But it seems possible to treat conditions like depression, insomnia, PTSD, and different kinds of pain via a brain stimulating device. Obviously, there are still many clinical, regulatory, and reimbursement hurdles on the way but things are progressing. The consumer space (or wearables targeted at bio-hackers, athletes, or other individuals who try to improve performance) is another fast-growing segment. While still not as prevalent as wrist- or finger-worn devices, EEG trackers might soon become more common in these groups in order to measure and support training the brain.
