It is estimated that 95% of small business owners overpay their taxes. Why? Because they're unfamiliar with the rebates and incentives that exist for their businesses to use. These programs aren't part of a CPA's daily core activities. If your business isn't using all the resources it has access to, then you're running the race without a support team to help guide you to the finish line. Tax Day was yesterday. 💰 So was the Boston Marathon. 🍀 This message is a friendly reminder that it's never too late to tap into the resources that are all around you. You just need to become aware of them. State and federal agencies don't actively promote these incentives. You have to find them yourself. Did I mention that we can recover funds on qualifying expenses from 3 years ago with some of these programs? Copywriter Makes $180K/year as a sole prop and we synced up in early 2024 Here are a few adjustments we made to his plan: --> His CPA was suggesting a SEP IRA for 2023 retirement contributions. I said that is dumb. SEP IRAs were a hit 10 years ago with later contribution deadlines but instead go with a solo 401(k). With about $120K of net earnings, he could put $53K into a solo 401(k) vs $30K with a SEP IRA. So that is what we did. We did this as all Roth --> We did this as a lump sum contribution and immediately invested it. He was hesitant with markets at all-time highs, it being an election year, cash paying 5%, etc but we discussed it and he went with the lump sum contribution. This money alone is up 25% YTD --> Then we did a backdoor Roth for the 2023 tax year, another $7K/year that grows tax-free forever for him --> Then elected S corp for 2024 with the help of a CPA. He'll comfortably have $150-$200K of profit this year and electing S corp is a $6K - $8K per year savings net of payroll and extra filing fees --> Integrated his solo 401(k) with his payroll provider so that his Roth solo 401(k) contributions happen automatically and mega backdoor Roth contributions happen automatically. This gets us to his #1 goal of having a simple, copy/paste plan he can repeat for ten years and not have to think about. All in he invests about $60K - $80K/year. Lives pretty frugally. Money is working for him and he's got a great plan in place. Cool to see how much his plan has done for him already this year alone --> Additional auto investing into a brokerage account to build liquidity and after a couple of years, we will ramp up brokerage account contributions vs. putting so much into retirement accounts

🚨 Attention QBO Payroll users! 🚨 Starting in January 2025, QuickBooks will no longer include printed and mailed W-2s as part of your QuickBooks Online Payroll subscription for the 2024 tax season. 📬 What’s Changing? QuickBooks will now charge $4 per employee for printing and mailing W-2s. E-filing and electronic delivery to employees are still included in your subscription, so no worries there! 💡 What You Need to Do: To avoid the new fees, log into your QuickBooks Online Payroll account and update your W-2 settings by January 3, 2025. You can choose to handle the printing and mailing yourself or have employees consent to receive paperless W-2s through QuickBooks Workforce. ❗ If You Don’t Change Anything: No action needed! QuickBooks will automatically print and mail W-2s at the new rate of $4 per employee if you’ve set up auto-tax payments and filings. 🦉How does Alicia feel about this? Mailing forms with employees' social security numbers is a security risk. FICA math - let's figure out how to estimate payroll #taxes, shall we? $100,000 of wages X 7.65% = $7,650 of FICA taxes...easy enough, right? Until we change it to $100k of 1099 income and now you are responsible for both the employee and employer portions of FICA and it's suddenly $15,300 of FICA taxes... But not if you made HSA contributions (let's assume you maxed it at $4,150) then it's only $95,850 X 7.65% = $7,333 of FICA... But not if we have 1099 income and make an HSA contribution because we're back to the 15.3% because employee and employer sides of it and we're at $14,665...(and yes part of that is deductible for INCOME tax purposes but the character limit will stop me from explaining that in this post) And that's all assume one source of income Because if we have $100k of W-2 income and another $100k of 1099 income than both are subject to FICA but only the first $169k is subject to the social security portion of FICA (6.2%) and the full $200k is subject to the medicare portion (1.45%)...unless of course you contribute to an HSA which lowers how much is subject to FICA #taxes Oh, and we should probably note that the HSA contribution for W-2 earners ONLY reduces FICA taxes IF you have it withheld from your wages directly, if you make a separate contribution you only get the income tax deduction, not the payroll tax deduction CURVEBALL! If you have both W-2 and 1099 earnings which one gets used up first to fill up that $169k social security base? And yes that is an important question because the 1099 income gets hit twice because you are both the employee and employer! And please don't confuse the HSA rules with how 401(k) contributions are treated...because 401(k) contributions only reduce taxable income NOT payroll taxes That $169k is an individual threshold by the way, so if you are married and your household income is $300k, the payroll taxes come out a lot different for a couple where one spouse earns the full $300k compared to a couple one spouse earns $100k and the other earns $200k Let's also not forget the additional medicare tax that not's really part of the traditional FICA tax but is still a medicare tax, a lovely bonus 0.9% on income over $250k for a couple married filing jointly...but that's combined income not individual income And while the amount is logically split in half for a couple married filing separately it is $200k for single filers so there's that There's also the added wrinkle of the same person having multiple employers and making over $169k between them because those employers are responsible for the payroll taxes on the wages they are paying and are not going to factor in other money you've made creating FICA tax refunds come tax time Which might sound good but it causes problems too when people don't understand where a refund came from... We should start a petition to bar congress from making tax rules where they can't explain how to calculate the result Happy Tax Planning!
