Last year, Maria Black was appointed as the seventh CEO since ADP’s 1949 founding, the first female CEO in ADP history. This year, we likely will elect the first female President in the history of United States, Kamala Harris. How can those amazing women beat the odds and achieve the top of their career and maintain a happy family at the same time? Claudia Goldin, a Harvard Economics professor, offered some suggestions in her best selling book, Career & Family. A inclusive society, an equal partner, a demanding but flexible profession and a supportive employer are all important to maintain the #career and #family balance. Inclusive Society Most modern societies have laws against gender discrimination in workplace. But what matters more is the prevailing cultural norms. Does most people in the society genuinely respect women and support their career ambitions? Is the working place safe for women? Does the society provide maternity leave for both mums and dads? Does the society have enough childcare and senior care facilities? Equal Partner “I want a partner who wants what I want.” One of Claudia’s female students declared. A supportive partner may be plenty at wedding time but the true test always comes later when one of the you needs to move to pursue an advance degree, when the first baby is born, and when the children’s school calls. Can he put off his career for yours? Who will work the weekend and who will take kids to soccer games? Flexible Profession Not all the profession are family friendly. Claudia compared two professions, Lawyer and Pharmacist to identify the key factors for family friendly professions: #flexible and #interchangeable. Being part of a team of professionals who are equally capable and can cover each other in most situations is critical for career and family balance. No surprise that #Engineers rank the highest and Medical Doctors and Lawyers rank the lowest in gender equality. Supportive Employer Ultimately, the compensation, the promotion, the flexible hours and the support all come from one’s employer. The company’s #HR policy and overall culture by and large determine whether it’s friendly and supportive to female employees. It’s not a surprise that ADP appointed a female CEO. Maria is the best among a large group of very talented female #Executives of ADP across all the business units and all the functional areas. Throughout ADP organizations, female associates thrive. ADP put a lot of efforts in supporting the work and life balance for ALL the associates while providing numerous programs, including business resource group (BRG), mentorship and career drive, to foster career #growth for female AND male associates. Working for a female friendly employer will make the career family balance a lot easier. A successful career and a happy family are achievable without sacrificing one for the other, for men and women. Don’t give up the dream to pursue both. #ADPLife #GenderEquality
