I'm thrilled that countries passed a critical resolution* at the World Health Assembly to recommit and refocus efforts on maternal and newborn health - and that it includes birth defects! Specifically, it invites Member States to "consider implementing a universal newborn screening program including comprehensive birth defect screening, including specific needs and considerations for diagnosis, management and long-term care of children with birth defects." More children are living with congenital birth defects - like #clubfoot - than ever before, and they are entitled to healthcare like everyone else. All countries can and should integrate screening and treatment of birth defects in their national health systems. In several countries - Sri Lanka, Philippines, Paraguay, Sierra Leone - we're supporting our local partners and national governments to make clubfoot early detection, referral and treatment part of routine healthcare. One thing I love: talking about gender equality!    I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Gavin Cleaver from the The Lancet about the enormous potential of investing in women’s health and economic opportunity.     Health and economic power also go hand-in-hand. When women are healthy, they can fully participate in the workforce, pursue education, and contribute to their families. When women have access to capital (cash and credit), they can grow their businesses, have a greater say over their finances and their futures budget, and become leaders in their communities and society.    Investing in women’s health and income-earning potential is truly a win for us all.    🎧 Listen to the full episode:

It reflects the collective and profound impact that our grantees and partners have delivered across communities around the world, including our work to advance climate-health financing with World Health Organization, Green Climate Fund, The Global Fund, and COP28 UAE which resulted in the Guiding Principles for Financing Climate and Health Solutions - endorsed by 50 organizations at the World Climate Action Summit at COP28. A fellowship for experienced journalists with a focus on international health. In comparing the U.S. health care system to its global counterparts, journalists traveling to different countries as part of the AHCJ International Fellowship program can produce projects that provide valuable insights that can help inform policy decisions, improve health care outcomes and contribute to the ongoing evolution of health care systems worldwide. Through the AHCJ International Health Study Fellowships, supported by The Commonwealth Fund, you can pursue a story or project comparing a facet of the U.S. health care system to that of another country. This fellowship allows highly experienced journalists to maintain their regular employment while working to evaluate a key component of the health care system, a health outcome, access, performance, providers, efficiency or other focal point over a six-month period. For 2025, the focus will be on European countries (preference for France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland or United Kingdom) in comparison with the U.S. health care system. You’ll pursue the projects with the support of your newsrooms or arranged outlets, which commit to publish or air the work.

There aren't many donors like Izumi Foundation who use #compassion as one of their key criteria for funding health programs in Africa and Latin America. So when they bring all their grantee partners together, something special happens... it's like the stardust that we humans are made of begins to twinkle from the inside ✨ FACE had the distinct pleasure of leading two sessions. Heather Buesseler led a Compassion Mapping workshop with all attendees. This gave participants a taste of our #humancentereddesign work with NAMA WELLNESS COMMUNITY CENTRE (NAWEC) & Safari Doctors, and it gave folks a "look under the hood" of compassion dynamics in their organization. 💡 Key takeaways: 1) An easy starting place to mobilize compassion in your organization is to build #empathy by getting to know your colleagues as whole humans. (We love simple check-in questions ✅ at the beginning of meetings for this! Just remember... they should have nothing to do with work 😉) 2) To strengthening organizational compassion, it's important to first make the compassion dynamics explicit. Scaling a story to reach the correct community becomes imperative if we hope to improve healthcare by promoting the shared decision-making model. Access to better quality healthcare for marginalized communities has broader economic global implication. Communities who understand and practice shared decision-making in healthcare realize there are other avenues and access to better quality healthcare. Today, more personalized information about our health and wellness is at our fingertips than ever before. To advance health equity in this digital age, we need solutions that promote inclusive and responsible virtual health initiatives. Jacaranda Health’s free digital platform PROMPTS is one great example of how other nations are grappling with one of the six trends in health equity RWJF and its partners at Dalberg identified earlier this year: the surge in digital health information impacting wellbeing. Coming out of Kenya, this free AI-enabled platform empowers new and expecting mothers with health information about all stages of pregnancy, including prenatal care, birth, and postnatal advice—tailored specifically to them. In a recent partnership with eHealth Africa, Jacaranda Health is expanding access to PROMPTS to Nigeria and adapting the platform to fit the Nigerian context. The immense potential of this tool gives me hope that we can continue to improve care systems, accessibility to health information, and promote wellbeing for mothers and their families. Maternal health in the U.S. is amongst the worst of high-income countries. There is much we can learn from Jacaranda Health’s innovative efforts to change the landscape of digital and maternal healthcare to ensure everyone receives the information and care they need to have a healthy pregnancy. Today marks one year since The Rockefeller Foundation announced a new climate strategy – a $1 billion investment over 5 years to work at the intersection of human opportunity and climate change. Here's what we've been working on so far: 1️⃣ We are finding and investing in new and existing solutions that can promote humanity's and the planet's well-being. 2️⃣ We are listening to members of frontline communities deeply impacted by climate change. 3️⃣ We are continuing to bring unlikely partners together to solve problems. That's why UNGA is so important for us – we'll gather leaders from the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to make big bets for the well-being of humanity. 4️⃣ And we are trying to walk the talk. We made a commitment to manage our endowment to target net zero emissions over time and to run our operations in a net zero manner. As we continue on our 5-year journey, I look forward to working with you and sharing what we've learned so we can accelerate opportunity and slow the climate crisis together.

Sounds like an amazing #vacancy to work on the intersection of systemic #riskassessment and #nature. I love their explicit wording: "ASRA is founded on a set of principles including non-human sanctity. Incorporating nature into #riskanalysis is not merely a matter of #environmental #stewardship or human self-preservation. #Naturecentric approaches attribute intrinsic value to all living organisms and ecosystems, independent of their utility to humans. This perspective recognizes the #interconnectedness of all life forms and the importance of preserving the integrity and health of other #species and #ecosystems for their own sake, and not just as a resource for humans. About Our Fellowship: The Healthcare Leadership for Climate Action Fellowship Program Our planet is getting warmer, and in some regions, getting colder. These extreme climate conditions pose a significant risk to the health of communities worldwide. Leading health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Public Health Association, and the World Health Organization (WHO), recognize the urgent need to combat the effects of climate change on global health. They stress the importance of equipping public health workers and related professionals with the skills to tackle this growing challenge, hence the vision behind the birth of Healthcare Leadership for Climate Action Fellowship Program. The Healthcare Leadership for Climate Action Fellowship Program is designed to empower public health experts, medical professionals, health educators, policymakers, environmentalists, government workers, and activists to confront the health risks posed by climate change. The Healthcare Leadership for Climate Action Fellowship Program is designed to empower local healthcare leaders with training, technology, and community initiatives for effective climate-action and sustainable low-carbon smart-healthcare solutions to drive global agendas. Participants in our fellowship program will learn to: 1. Understand and communicate the health risks associated with climate change and the immediate benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 2. Develop plans to make their communities more resilient to climate change’s health effects, focusing on improving health equity. 3. Effectively communicate about climate change and health to foster better adaptive responses, encourage positive behavior changes, and support community actions for systemic change. Our fellowship adopts a hybrid approach: offline and online, removing the need for physical attendance (when it is not feasible) and making it more accessible to a larger global audience beyond local/regional communities. It includes a series of comprehensive courses plus a region-specific short course tailored to local needs. A survey of health directors in large US cities reveals a troubling lack of trust between communities and public health (only 18% report high trust). However, all leaders prioritize partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs). While trust seems to be a challenge (only 28% felt it's improving), there's a clear recognition of the importance of collaboration. All public health department leaders ranked partnerships with CBOs as their top priority – a staggering 79% agreed. The article highlights a strength in collaboration.
