Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation. CAE will increase its ownership stake in its existing SIMCOM Aviation Training joint venture by purchasing a majority of SIMCOM shares from Volo Sicuro for USD $230 million, subject to customary adjustments, to be financed with CAE’s existing credit facility and cash on hand. As part of the transaction, Flexjet, LLC, a related party of Volo Sicuro, will retain a minority stake in SIMCOM following the closing, expected to take place in the coming days. Archer Aviation Inc. proudly announces that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued the final airworthiness criteria for Archer's Midnight aircraft for public inspection. This crucial regulatory milestone paves the way for Archer to achieve type certification for Midnight, marking Archer as one of only two companies worldwide to reach this level of certification progress with the FAA for an eVTOL aircraft. The finalization of the airworthiness criteria enables Archer to collaborate with the FAA to secure the remaining approvals on its certification and test plans. This development is a significant step as Archer ramps up its "for credit" testing with the FAA and gears up for piloted flight testing later this year. "Midnight is one giant step closer to taking passengers into the sky in the coming years in the U.S. The final airworthiness criteria for Midnight is an important step on our journey to make electric flying taxis an everyday reality," said Billy Nolen, FRAeS, Archer's Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer and former FAA Administrator. Archer aims to revolutionize urban travel by replacing lengthy car commutes with 10-20 minute flights that are safe, sustainable, low noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation. [FAA Creating New Committee To Update Launch Regulations] U.S. launch regulations could soon get an overhaul. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today (Nov. 14) that it's creating a new committee to review and update its "Part 450" launch and reentry licensing rule. "The FAA is seeking to update the licensing rule to foster more clarity, flexibility, efficiency and innovation," Kelvin Coleman, the FAA's associate administrator for commercial space transportation, said in a statement today. "Making timely licensing determinations without compromising public safety is a top priority." Part 450 was implemented in March 2021 to help streamline the licensing process, according to today's statement. But the agency believes more such work is needed, given the ever-increasing cadence of private launches from American soil. The FAA licensed 148 "commercial space operations" in fiscal year 2024, which ran from Oct. 1, 2023 through Sept. 30 of this year. That was a 30% increase from FY 2023, and the agency thinks the number could more than double by FY 2028, according to the statement. Most of the action is driven by SpaceX. The company has already launched more than 100 orbital missions this calendar year, most of them dedicated to building out its Starlink broadband megaconstellation in low Earth orbit. Elon Musk has frequently complained about the FAA and regulations in general, claiming that the current system stifles the American launch industry. The billionaire SpaceX founder and CEO may now be in a position to relax launch rules; President-elect Donald Trump just appointed him to co-lead the "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE), a new organization that aims to "dismantle government bureaucracy" and "slash excess regulations." But today's FAA news is not a reaction to Trump's election or the establishment of DOGE; according to SpaceNews' Jeff Foust, the new committee "has been planned for months." The new rulemaking committee will consist of people from the space industry and academia, according to today's FAA statement. The group will outline recommended changes to Part 450 in a report that's expected to be submitted by late summer 2025. "The FAA is committed to enabling the success of the U.S. commercial space transportation industry, ensuring the U.S. remains the preeminent commercial space country of choice and maintaining the industry’s strong safety record," FAA officials wrote in today's statement. "Reaching a license approval in a timely and efficient manner is central to achieving these outcomes and requires a partnership between the FAA and the industry."
