DEI work, while fulfilling, carries a significant emotional burden. This recent Harvard Business Review article sheds light on the ‘emotional labor’ many DEI professionals face—navigating complex dynamics, biases, and organizational paradigms that don’t always align with genuine inclusion efforts. The pressure to constantly manage emotions, combined with the responsibility of educating others, often leads to burnout. I am preparing to head to DC (as Director of the Ohio Workforce Coalition) and I will be carrying this work with me! I’ve long wanted to see my field grapple with our role in perpetuating these false narratives of skill building and employer deference being the lead answers to workforce issues. I’m grateful to Clair Minson, LCPC (she/her) who blogged that Our Field Needs a Reckoning, and to leaders like Grace Heffernan who have refused to accept business as usual and Hannah Halbert who's been questioning the skills gap for over 10 years. In particular, Clair's post outlines how these failings disproportionately affect Black and brown workers economically, and how employers can begin to correct these wrongs. This work shows that we can have impact if we choose to. We can choose to do our work differently. We can choose to say no to blaming skills for poor workplace conditions. We can choose to incentivize job creation and retention efforts in ways that foster meaningful partnerships with communities. We can choose to support the employers who are actually investing in workers rather than structuring their business model around worker churn. We can choose to invest in grassroots efforts and the on-the-ground work of reclaiming worker power in an equitable way (which means some of us need to step aside). The question is, are we willing to do so?

The relationship between coach and coachee is special because it creates a safe space that unlocks truth, awareness, and individual power. Over the last year it has truly been an honor being the coach to over 30 individuals. Each relationship is so unique, and each one taught me something new every time we met. Here are some of my take aways from my first year of being a professional coach. ✅ There is so much to see, hear, and feel when you slow down to appreciate and explore what is truly there. ✅ Intuition is a powerful presence and you should find ways to better understand what it is telling you. ✅ Being able to articulate your values allows you to firmly plant your feet on the ground and then pivot in the direction you want to take. ✅ Take the time to notice what your body is telling you because those feelings can be a warning, or they can be encouragement. ✅ There is nothing more sacred than honoring a commitment to yourself, especially knowing those are the commitments we typically break the most. Facilitation is an art form. Helping groups of people work together to perform tasks, make decisions, and solve problems... it's not a skill everyone has. My job is to make people better facilitators by teaching them to read a room, ask the right questions and have a dose of self-awareness. I've always had a lot of love in my heart for #ConsciousCapitalism - and have spent my career trying to bring as much mindfulness to the corporate workplace as possible. But this last episode, I was totally inspired by the great Gary A. Bolles, Chair of #FutureofWork at Singularity University, articulating the power of #WorkplaceEmpathy: "Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, says he believes that empathy is the greatest human superpower. It's our ability to empathize with our co-worker, with our customers, with the planet, the needs of the planet, that helps us as humans. And so we need all of those skills, and we need to continually develop them, but they actually have application of wide variety of different situations..." an on Gary led my co-hosts, Charlie Nguyen and Professor James Oliverio on a tour of Gary's seminal book, as it appllied to empowering the workforce and our mantra to, "AI Up!"
