I noted a story last week about a collaboration between Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies, and industrial drone solutions provider Dronus. In a trial at The Ericsson USA 5G Smart Factory, the consortium has successfully tested a 5G mmWave-powered autonomous drone for indoor inventory management. The natively 5G mmWave-connected drone performed several indoor missions within the factory, including autonomous inventory checks. By taking advantage of 5G on mmWave's speeds and latency capabilities, the drone scans barcodes for real-time inventory tracking. This solution not only streamlines processes but also highlights the growing importance of 5G in industrial automation. When looking at the opportunities for 5G in various industry verticals, manufacturing is one of the leading environments where the technology is making a difference. These proof of concept trials are important to showcase how the emergence of standalone 5G offers many industries fresh opportunities. Indoor drones are an example of areas that are likely to be an essential sector in large manufacturing transformations in the future. Offering transferable and easily deployed opportunities will unlock the value. New Research Report from O-RAN ALLIANCE nGRG RS01 stream was out recently. Its related to usecases and gap analysis of mmWave Antenna Distribution (mWAD). Happy to contribute in this research report. To realize this, an even greater data rate and lower latency communication will be required. For instance, the data rates needed for replicating real objects in virtual spaces for live sports, live music, or the metaverse demand 14-230 Gbps per object for uplink, while on the viewing side, 48-200 Gbps for downlink is necessary. These requirements exceed the capabilities of 5G. This report demonstrates how mWAD can contribute to realizing such a future and clearly identifies its challenges. I’ve written another piece on US #spectrum policy & #mobile bands - and what should be done in preparation for #WRC27 over the next 3 years. This is part of my ongoing focus on global spectrum-sharing policy, as well as my advisory work with SFTF. This time it has been published via Fierce Network. My view is that the US should directly engage with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) process at multiple levels, to push for greater understanding and technological innovation in sharing approaches. In particular the focus of IMT (ie #5G & #6G) spectrum should be on regulators assuming a “sharing-native” future in the 2030s, instead of the historic focus of assigning exclusive licences. This should be reflected in any figure IMT identifications & footnotes. In addition, it should be a core part of the various study groups and working parties’ efforts. There also needs to be far more realism about mobile traffic on the international stage - its flattening growth, the many non-credible forecasts, its localisation to specific areas & the impact of aspects such as FWA and indoor use. A critical aspect is dealing with the proposed IMT study bands for WRC-27, which seem “coincidentally” to be exactly the same as those used within NATO for military communications. At the moment, the US #CBRS band is one of the leading examples of dynamic spectrum sharing in practice. The work by NTIA & NSF is also advancing the technological base, including the role of AI. It should be advocating this work more globally, especially at ITU. But first, the mainstream US mobile industry needs to get onboard. #spectrumpolicy #telecompolicy #technology #regulation

Some big announcements this week related to the use of #AI in Telco Mobile Networks. Timing couldn't be better as Spectrum Effect was just this week awarded the patent for the use of AI and Machine Learning Models for classifying interference types in Mobile Operator RAN networks. I have strong conviction on AI's ability to drive more efficient and effective operations of mobility networks and ultimately better outcomes for consumers of the services that mobile networks enable. The #lack of #progress in #standalone #5G #deployments highlighted in the GSA May 2024 Market Snapshot Report is a point worth noting. Stalled #Standalone 5G -The report indicates that the number of operators with deployed standalone 5G networks hasn't increased since the end of 2023 (at 49). This suggests a #slowdown in the #rollout of the next-generation 5G technology. Expectations vs. Reality- Standalone 5G promises significant #improvements in network #performance, #efficiency, and #flexibility. The lack of progress could be due to various factors like technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, investment considerations, infrastructure limitations, or delays in developing applications that fully utilize standalone 5G capabilities. Additionally, the transition to standalone 5G networks requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and investments, which can be both costly and time-consuming for operators. Some operators might be in the process of deploying standalone 5G networks that haven't been publicly announced yet. 🌐 Wireless internet has become an indispensable part of our daily lives, supporting a wide range of activities from professional communications to streaming entertainment. However, the growing demand for wireless connectivity has led to increased power consumption and carbon emissions. Fortunately, researchers at Central University (CU), IIDM, and CU J&K in India have been working on energy-efficient techniques to address this challenge. Their recent paper published in IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking introduces a hybrid solution that combines visible light communication (VLC) with RF communication, promising reliable indoor communication with lower energy consumption. The team's proposed wireless communication system comprises a transmitter and a receiver module, connected through a VLC channel. By leveraging visible light, transmitted through light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or other artificial light sources, they achieve efficient data transmission with reduced power consumption. Initial evaluations using various simulation platforms have demonstrated stable communication and significant energy savings. The team's approach also holds the potential to enhance mobile device battery life, adding approximately 7 hours of usage time. This research contributes to ongoing efforts to reduce power consumption and electromagnetic radiation, while improving the energy efficiency of wireless communications. 13 Sep 2024 — This latest telco API initiative from Ericsson is a step in the right direction. As always, the devil is in the details. The final outcome will hinge on the manner in which the initiative is executed. The article below states that "McKinsey & Company sees network API market potentially generating hundreds of billions in new revenue". My question is: who will capture most of it? 😁 This aside, this new initiative certainly addresses key challenges below that need to be addressed in order for telco APIs to gain traction: 1️⃣ The issue of market fragmentation (a key concern for app developers). Developers with multi-regional plans do not have to engage with multiple parties which will necessarily lead to more complexity, effort, and time. 2️⃣ Key stakeholders will be able to capture their share of economic value to be created from the APIs. Success of this new venture will hinge on several factors: 1️⃣ Uniform/standard engagement models with developers worldwide, including pricing, terms and conditions, support, and customer experience. 2️⃣ The ability of CSPs to market the new services. Many CSPs will need to up their game here. There is much room for improvements so far as CSP engagements with app developer communities are concerned. 3️⃣ A large ecosystem of app developers supporting this initiative. Ericsson and CSPs will both need to demonstrate the value of the APIs (coupled with comms networks) to attract app developers. Both need to get the developer communities wildly excited over this! 4️⃣ From a technology perspective, the APIs must be able to work seamlessly across various CSP networks without any further integration work such that app developers can truly "build once and deploy to many". 5️⃣ All partners in the initiative continuing to have common interests and perspectives such that the intiative does not devolve into disagreements. Market implications: 1️⃣ Ericsson seems well poised to gain an upperhand over Nokia. This can be further bad news for Nokia given the market speculation over the future of its mobile business unit (i.e., will it be sold off?) and its business challenges. 2️⃣ I am also curious as to what the implications will be for the Singtel-driven Bridge Alliance API Exchange (BAEx). There are clear overlaps which raise the inevitable question: Will BAEx eventually become redundant or even irrelevant? This new Ericsson initiative will clearly have greater global scale, reach, and support. 3️⃣ It is still unclear how the cloud hyperscalers will respond to this. Do they see this as a threat? Goodbye 3G! The last 3G network was closed down in Helsinki last night. Kenny (Nokia 6650) and my WCDMA book can be retired to the museum now. WCDMA theoretical peak rate was 2 Mbps (and practical 0.4 Mbps) while the live 5G network in Helsinki provides 2 Gbps. Impressive evolution in the last 22 years! The data rate has more than doubled every two years since 2002. And more evolution coming with 5G-Advanced and 6G.
