Patient Capital “Patient capital” refers to long-term investment with no expectation of quick profits, aiming instead for substantial returns over time. Recently, NASSCOM’s Deep Tech community has explored how patient capital can foster growth in Quantum, AI, and other areas. A proposal has been submitted to NASSCOM’s policy team. A notable example of patient capital is the Novo Nordisk Foundation, established in 1922, with donations exceeding $107 billion. The Foundation supports life sciences, engineering, and commercialization of scientific solutions. It also collaborates with governments, including NATO’s DIANA incubator for Quantum. Example: PsiQuanta PsiQuanta is developing a photonic quantum computer set to launch by 2027, following 25 years of research supported by grants. The current focus is on engineering challenges for commercial deployment, funded by sources like DARPA and the Australian government. In India, BITS and Manipal institutions exemplify successful philanthropic efforts in education. A similar model could be applied to other sectors. For instance, a private cancer hospital with a 25-30 year vision could leverage patient capital to advance research in cancer vaccines, AI-driven care, and more. Establishing a separate fund for research and hospital operations, potentially through IFSC in Gift City, could attract foreign donations. Building the Ecosystem A multi-pronged approach is needed: - Engage with the government via NASSCOM and other industry bodies to support this ecosystem. - Secure long-term funding from grants, endowments, and investments by the government, institutions, alumni, HNIs, family offices, and corporations. - Mobilize grassroots funding from individuals, especially those personally affected by the cause, through crowdfunding for research and commercial initiatives. - Support commercialization through startups, VCs, and financial institutions. While some fund managers doubt India's readiness for patient capital, there is growing interest among individuals, family offices, and funds willing to support it on a case-by-case basis. What a wonderful story published in today's Groww Newsletter with a strong message on the importance of Due Diligence. In the #startup ecosystem, #boldness and #confidence are often seen as signs of leadership and vision. But don’t mistake confidence for credibility—this can open doors for some conman who use charm and bravado to deceive investors and founders alike. Anthony Gignac, who pretended to be a Saudi prince for nearly 30 years. He lived a lavish lifestyle, projected wealth and power, and convinced even billionaires to trust him. His entire act was built on nothing but confidence, and it fooled many including luxury hotel chains, billionaires and even American Express who didn’t take the time to investigate his claims. The startup world isn’t immune to such tactics. Self-proclaimed experts or influencers can enter the scene, pitching revolutionary ideas, promising unrealistic growth, or flashing wealth to gain credibility. Some may have little more than charisma and flashy presentations, but lack the substance to back it up. What’s the lesson? Practice due diligence. In the fast-paced world of startups, it’s easy to get swept up by big promises and bold visions. But before trusting anyone do your research, verify their track record, and ask the hard questions. Every Health Tech Innovation sounds great in theory… BUT health systems should “stress test” the idea to see if it works for YOU. Here’s how 👇 Suppose you were considering something like SeamlessMD to provide digital care journeys pre/post-surgery, oncology, chronic care, etc. Sure it sounds great on paper to provide every patient with a digital experience to guide them with reminders, education and symptom tracking. But before you get started, here are 5 questions your health system stakeholders need to ask yourselves: 1️⃣ Does the vendor’s product and track record give us confidence in their ability to deliver this great sounding innovation? If not, are we the right health system to take on this level of risk? 2️⃣ Do we have clinical champions across physicians, nurses, allied health, etc. willing to engage in the clinical content review process? Because you need to be aligned on the clinical content being delivered to patients. 3️⃣ Does IT have the resources to integrate with the platform to automate patient enrollment? Or are we willing to use it as a standalone platform and have staff willing to spend 30 seconds to enroll a patient in the backend? 4️⃣ Are we willing to train staff on how to educate and promote this initiative to patients and families? Remember that staff endorsement highly correlates with patient adoption. Digital Health doesn’t sell itself. 5️⃣ Do we want to take full advantage of the platform and enable alerts and dashboards to remotely monitor patients? It’s not a requirement but it has a bigger impact on outcomes, especially readmissions and ED visits. As you work through these questions, you will find out if your team is motivated and willing to engage fully in the Digital Transformation and change management process needed to make the Tech successful. Also, the better a Vendor Partner, the more they can actually guide you through these questions. In many cases they may make it easier for you to get to a “Yes” because they have proven playbooks and processes that make your staff more confident in the change management required. Now if you end up going through this “stress test” and realize the innovation isn’t the right fit, that doesn’t mean you’ll never do it… It just might mean it doesn’t make sense today. But better to realize that upfront than to buy a great Product… and then fail the implementation because you didn’t think about the People and Process aspects beforehand.
