I had the honor of contributing to a powerful and timely book by my friend, Kwame Sarfo-Mensah entitled Learning to Relearn: Supporting Identity in a Culturally Affirming Classroom. I was asked to review and provide input for the chapter titled Black Perspectives Combating Anti-Blackness in Schools, and let me tell you, helping with this project brought together three of my favorite things: ✨ Working collaboratively ✨ Supporting another Black creative ✨ Creating awareness about anti-Blackness In this chapter, I share some of my personal experiences navigating educational spaces, including this quote: "I rarely saw someone who looked like me celebrated, and this lack of affirming content would impact my life for many years to come." This book is an important resource for educators and anyone invested in fostering classrooms where all identities are affirmed. My review focused on unpacking anti-Blackness—a pervasive force that exists within a colonial framework. Anti-Blackness is more than just racism; it is a belief system that deems people of African ancestry incapable of full humanity. It diminishes Black wisdom, denies Black truth, and minimizes the devastating impact of Black death. We see anti-Blackness manifesting globally, from disparities in housing, health, and education to rhetoric and institutional practices that perpetuate harm. As a global phenomenon, anti-Blackness is intertwined with other systems of oppression, such as xenophobia and nationalism. By addressing these realities in educational spaces, this book helps dismantle harmful systems and create culturally affirming classrooms where students can see themselves celebrated, valued, and loved.
