A day late but no less heartfelt: happy book birthday to Edward Marx and Cris Ross, a dynamic duo if ever there was one. Getting sick, really sick, is hard. Most of us aren’t lucky enough to work at a top hospital (or have good insurance or access to care) when illness comes for us our our loved ones. Who can you trust? What should you say if you don’t like your options? How can you build a support system to help you with the right things? And how can you do it all when you feel like garbage? Cris and Ed asked themselves the same questions when cancer came for them. They couldn’t believe they had to ask, because they worked for two of the world’s top hospitals. But even they were unsure, scared, and didn’t know what to do next. If only they had a book that laid it all out clearly… When they couldn’t find one, they decided to write one. So what are we doing about this? Social Health X Foundation is experimenting with small pilot intervention studies where NJ WIC nutritionists help identify high-risk pregnant moms; those with HBP, a family history of HBP, a previous pregnancy involving preeclampsia, a pre-term birth, etc. We work with the nutritionists to provide the moms with the health information and the tools they need, including an automatic blood pressure cuff and logbook, to monitor their health, take care of themselves, and protect their babies. #maternalmortality #pregnancy #healthequity #WIC #infantmortality #SDOH
