Amid the rising competition in the quick commerce space, Zepto is looking to raise $650 Mn from new and existing investors 👇 The funding round, which will be led by existing backer Nexus Venture Partners and its limited partner StepStone Group, will bump up the startup’s valuation to $3.5 Bn from its last valuation of $1.4 Bn. The investment will make it Nexus’ largest investment till date. The round will also see participation from existing investor Glade Brook Capital and new investors Avenir Growth, Lightspeed Venture Partners, DST Global and Avra, the report said. This came a day after another report said that DST Global and Lightspeed Venture Partners will invest in Zepto’s funding round. upGrad Secures $35M Debt Funding from EvolutionX Indian edtech unicorn upGrad has now secured $35 million loans in Debt Funding from EvolutionX. The latest fund-raise happens to be the first this year from a debt perspective for the Mumbai-based company. The board at upGrad has approved issuance of a total of 28,75,000 fully - convertible debentures (FCD) for an issue price Rs 1000 each to secure these funds from the Mauritius-based Kalpavriksha Foundation. The funds will be used to support growth initiatives, operating expenses and for general corporate purposes. Including this round of funding, upGrad raised over $265 million to date. That includes the $36.5 million it had lured in via a rights issue from Temasek, founder Ronnie Screwvala and other in May of last year. upGrad, which is backed by Temasek had been in talks to raise $100 million for acquisition of online education startup Udacity As per TheKredible report with 20.7% stake, the largest investor in upGrad is Temasek and co-founder & chairperson Ronnie Screwvala owns a significant chunk as well at 22.4%. In 2022, upGrad expanded into the offline higher education space, investing $30 million to establish ten global campuses across India, the US, and other regions. The company has seen significant growth, with operational revenue increasing by 72% to Rs 1,194 crore in FY23, up from Rs 692 crore in FY22. Quick commerce unicorn Zepto has raised $665 million at a valuation of $3.6 billion. Founders Thought As a founder, what is the cost of entrepreneurship? Yesterday, as part of SaaSBoomi Caravan event. Prukalpa interviewed Girish Mathrubootham As always, I admire Girish's storytelling capabilities and candid feedback straight from the heart. When the question arises, "What is the cost of success?" Girish highlighted two things. The first point is about missing spending time with family, especially kids. He started Freshworks in 2011 when his two boys were around 7 and 5 years old, and he never managed to spend enough time with them. This is his exact statement from him (I couldn't capture this). "Today, I have time to spend with them, but they don't have time to spend with me" Girish and I have similar backgrounds. We have two boys of similar ages. From day one, I was very clear that I would not compromise on family and friends. As a family, we traveled a lot; we picked up and dropped them at school and external classes, went out for dinner and to friends' places on weekends, took them on road trips in Europe, and so on. I do not have any regret on this. As a Founder, take this one seriously, you cannot rewind your time. The second point is around founders health. I have noticed that Founders do not prioritize their health and take it for granted until it's too late. I was like that until 2019. We both realized that during COVID-19, and as some of you know, I transformed from 78 kg to 63 kg (I'll put the link to the article in the comments). The most important asset for any founder is "you" I can give an analogy of a flight attendant explaining safety procedures, "put your own mask first, before helping others"
