🚨 New SOC Alert Investigation🚨 As part of my ongoing journey into cybersecurity and SOC operations, I recently tackled an investigation into an Internal Port Scan Activity. This alert provided a great opportunity to dive deeper into network security and refine response strategies for detecting and mitigating internal threats. Here’s a quick summary of my findings: 🔍 Key Investigation Steps: - Identified the source of the port scan and mapped its activity across the network. - Analyzed network logs to understand the scope and intent of the scanning behavior. - Correlated the activity with known assets to determine if it was legitimate or malicious. 🔑 Key Takeaways: - Internal port scans can be initiated by compromised devices, misconfigured applications, or even insider threats. - Regular asset and network behavior monitoring is essential to detect anomalous scanning activity. - Proactive measures like port access restrictions and system hardening are critical for minimizing risks. ⚙️ Remediation Actions: - Blocked unnecessary open ports and applied stricter firewall rules. - Conducted a vulnerability assessment to ensure patched and updated systems. - Enhanced alerting rules to flag unusual scanning activity earlier. The journey of a #cybergirl continues. Week 4 was focused on Network defense and cyber threat management using the courses offered by Cisco SkillsForAll. During these courses, I have learned about governance and compliance. IT security governance determines who is authorized to make decisions about security risks within an organization. I learned about cybersecurity policies and the types of security policies, which include: identification and authentication policy, password policy, acceptable use policy, credential policy, data policy, etc. Also, I got to learn about the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics, which were created by the Computer Ethics Institute. The Ten Commandments can also serve as a guide for making ethical decisions. Another notable thing was the industry-specific laws. For example, the PCI DSS associated with the credit card industry and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GBLA) associated with the financial industry. Other key points of knowledge gained were: - Risk management and security controls - Threat Intelligence - Incident response - cloud security - cryptography etc. Looking forward to diving deeper into cybersecurity in week 5. I recently had the opportunity to go through CompTIA-CySA+ ,Cybersecurity Analyst certification training, I was impressed. The exam is affordable and if you order Jason Dion training from Udemy, it comes with a study guide, 30 day study plan and detailed layout of what to expect. The Udemy on-demand video is 36hrs in length and goes beyond the scope the certification. Jason go-to tools is Security-Onion, Kali Linux and endless practical demonstrations. The training covers the following => •Identify Security Control Types •Threat Intelligence Sharing •Classifying Threats •Threat Hunting •Network Forensic •Appliance Monitoring •Endpoint Monitoring •Email Monitoring •Configuring SIEM Stay tuned for my writeup on ISACA's CCOA (Certified Cybersecurity Operation Analyst) certification.
