Kudos to Abigail Bassett and Climatebase for the excellent explainer on carbon offsets and the new Biden administration framework. 3 Key takeaways: 1. We cannot abandon private sector financing of SDG projects. Bravo to the administration's attempts to re-establish U.S. leadership in global climate efforts. We need to embrace a range of climate change strategies beyond domestic regulation and public funding. 2. Not "throwing the baby out with the bath water" - While the Biden administration's carbon offset guidelines are not perfect and face valid criticisms, they demonstrate a willingness to explore innovative policy tools and leverage private sector resources to tackle climate change. 3. Establishing standards for high-integrity offsets can help combat greenwashing - Offset projects that drive real, additional emissions reductions can lead to substantive sustainable impact. 🇺🇸 The U.S. Federal departments and offices have just released the "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles”. We at International Carbon Registry celebrate more clarity on the direction of this important market and its role in the climate crisis. Notable developments include: • The emergence of multi-stakeholder initiatives that have set out standards and principles for high-integrity credit development and responsible credit use; • Improvements to key crediting methodologies, their guiding standards, and tracking systems; • New and improved analytical products and services that aim to strengthen credit transparency and quality comparability, such as carbon credit rating services; • Technologies to support robust measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV); • Multilateral rules, guidance, and procedures developed under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the international aviation sector's global carbon market-based measure, which shape certified emissions reductions and removals that often find their home in VCMs'; and • Advances in the development of market infrastructure to improve transparency and liquidity, as well as the integrity of market transactions.

Great to hear reflexions from funders and collaborators on how this work has focused on a largely neglected field in which we need to make progress urgently. There is no way to reaching 1.5C, or any climate goal without substantive emission reductions from livestock methane by 2050. We need more solutions in more places, with lower costs, and benefits to farmers, for it to really scale. That is the EFA methane moonshot.

Great work Dave Haynes! I'm a big proponent of True Cost Accounting and the work done by the Rockefeller Foundation. Quote from the report: "As long as producers are subsidized to maintain conventional agricultural practices and hidden costs remain unfactored in economic decision-making, financiers have reduced incentive to redirect capital flows into regenerative agricultural production systems that diminish negative externalities. Indeed, studies have indicated that the true cost of food is three times higher than expenditure on food, primarily due to “hidden” externalized costs borne by society via health care (e.g., spending on diet-related diseases) and environmental impacts (e.g., GHG emissions, water pollution, soil erosion, biodiversity loss)". It takes 50 years to reabsorb deforestation emmissions! You often hear/read me drone on about the critical importance of avoidance carbon credits, particularly in the context of avoided deforestation. Steve Zwick elegantly summarised why those in the nature based solutions space insist on avoidance credits, citing this 2019 paper from Nature: One hectare of deforestation emits 355 tons of CO2 (all at once). One hectare of reforestation absorbs 6.7 tons of CO2 per year. In other words, it will take 50 years for newly planted trees to reabsorb the carbon released by every hectare deforested today. Reforestation is great, but stopping deforestation and degradation is critical. “We are in a race, but we are on the right side of history.” This is the message I shared this week at Ceres 35th Anniversary Gala in NYC, marking decades of leadership with our investor and company partners on climate, water, and nature risks.   “We’re in a race to curb the greatest challenge of our lives, to dramatically ramp up investments and innovations already underway. The past ten years of change have been extraordinary.   Yet, at this moment, we’re not winning.   Climate challenges are escalating, energy demand is growing, and despite extraordinary progress, it’s simply not enough. And we face opponents who have the audacity to suggest that investors and companies should be prohibited from acting on climate change.      But when it comes to tackling climate change, water scarcity, and nature loss, we are defiant. Science is clear, the consequences daunting, and climate catastrophes now part of everyday existence. We can do this. Together, we’ve done a lot.  Ceres created global partnerships that mobilize the most influential companies and investors to champion climate action in their businesses, their portfolios, and Congress. We established the business case for a future where the economy and the planet thrive.  We will keep moving forward with a deep sense of optimism, because the clean economy momentum is undeniable. Always grateful for the release of The Good Food Institute's state of the industry reports for packaging up key developments in the ever-evolving alternative protein space 🙏    Some of my 2023 highlights 👇    Adoption is on the up, as 62% of households bought vegan products, with meat and seafood reaching 15% of homes. Repeat purchase rates were also high at 81% for the entire category, and 62% for meat and seafood analogs    The number of companies and production facilities for alternative proteins increased, with 174 businesses working on cultivated meat across the supply chain (166 in 2022), and 158 on fermentation-based proteins (136 in 2022)    Beef became the vegan analog closest to price parity, costing $7.48 per pound, versus $6.24 for the same amount of animal-derived beef – a 20% difference    Despite total global VC funding for alt proteins dipping by 44% from $2.9B in 2022 to $1.6B in 2023, investments in Europe actually increased for the second consecutive year, reaching $584M (up by 74%), a record total for the region.
